Based on a novel of the same name by E. Despite having already rubbed shoulders with megastars Nicole Kidman and
Tilda Swinton on two other big projects in the past year – Baby Girl and The Room Next Door – McGregor told Elle she was truly thrilled to play her character Mirren on We Were Liars. 'She's one of the first characters I've played who has this bounciness of youth. Her youth is very energetic,' she explained.

'Being able to be on sets really aided that love and that breath and that heartbeat. As much as I don't think I would be able to do anything else, who knows? It was the way that I was born, the world I was born into. So I feel very thankful that I'm able to do what I do, because I need it.'

Looking for luxury stays in London? The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and Mandarin Oriental Mayfair offer unique experiences for the discerning traveller – and locations that are second-to-none

London is one of the few cities in the world to boast two Mandarin Oriental properties, and much like in the hotel chain's hometown of Hong Kong, they complement each other. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park opened its doors 25 years ago and has built a loyal following among Asian, Middle Eastern and American clients who like its proximity to the green expanse and the luxury shops of Knightsbridge, including the legendary department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London is situated in one of the capital's most prestigious areas. While the Hyde Park property marries British tradition with the warm, Asian-style service the company is known for, the Mayfair hotel is low key and discreet, eschewing grandeur for quiet luxury. Housed in a historic Edwardian structure first built in 1889 as a gentlemen's club and residence, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is always buzzing with international guests and stylish locals making a beeline for its popular eateries, which include the two-Michelin-starred Dinner by Heston Blumenthal – one of Britain's most celebrated chefs; the lovely Hyde Park Garden, a perfect spot for a drink or an informal meal in warm weather; and Japanese izakaya The Aubrey. Needless to say, the accommodations overlooking the park, some of them with balconies, are the most coveted among visitors. Views like these are priceless in a dense city like London, and the natural light on a sunny day truly makes a difference. If you're looking for panoramic views, the Mayfair property's rooms and suites will not provide any, but the hotel's focus on privacy, personalised service and discretion is just as appealing for discerning travellers. Sleek and urban, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is housed in a newly built red brick and glass structure in Hanover Square, a short walk from the luxury shops of Bond Street and more commercial Oxford Street. The rooms and suites are quite minimal when compared to those at Hyde Park but touches such as de Gournay hand-painted wallpaper and curvilinear sofas make them warm and welcoming. Award-winning Korean-born American chef Akira Back is the mastermind behind the two main restaurants – Akira Back and Dosa by Akira Back – while Abar Rooftop, on the top floor, features an outdoor terrace with great views of Mayfair and London's skyline.

Who is Shubham Maheshwari, who plays Gat on We Were Liars? He's a Hollywood newcomer with no previous screen experience – but as a teenager, he was inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio

Shubham Maheshwari stands out like a sore thumb on the fictional Beechwood Island where Amazon Prime Video's latest drama series, We Were Liars, takes place. Adapted from author E. Lockhart's book of the same name, We Were Liars centres on Cadence Sinclair ( Emily Alyn Lind ), the daughter of a wealthy family who suffered a terrible head injury. Photo: @shubham/Instagram Holidaying on her family's private island, Cadence tries to regain her memory with the help of her two older cousins ( Esther McGregor and Joseph Zada ) and their friend, Gat Patil, played by Maheshwari. Unlike his ultra wealthy, ultra blonde friends, Maheshwari's character is of Indian descent and was raised in New York in a working-class family; these differences play a role in Gat's relationship with the Sinclairs. He had no professional acting experience Shubham Maheshwari was studying economics when he applied for the We Were Liars role. Photo: @shubham/Instagram Born and raised in Dubai to Indian immigrant parents, Maheshwari had never set foot on a film set, had no screen credits to his name, and had no agent before landing his breakout role as Gat Patil on We Were Liars. Unlike his three co-stars, he also had no connection to the industry – Emily Alyn Lind, Esther McGregor and Joseph Zada all have parents in showbiz. Maheshwari was a university student studying economics when he came across an open casting call on Backstage, the 'LinkedIn' for models and actors, for the role of Gat Patil. 'Reading their brief character description of Gat, I immediately knew this was something I would apply for, but that was about it – I did not think or expect anything,' Maheshwari said in an interview with Backstage. 'I then immediately read the book and fell in love with this incredible story.'

Wimbledon: Carlos Alcaraz subdues Fritz to reach third successive final

Carlos Alcaraz reached his third successive Wimbledon final as the defending champion battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 win against American fifth seed Taylor Fritz on Friday. With Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio watching from the stands, Alcaraz survived a titanic clash lasting two hours and 49 minutes in searing temperatures on Centre Court. As the mercury rose close to 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit), play was interrupted by several fans taken ill, but Alcaraz kept his cool to subdue the big-serving Fritz with his sublime returns and immaculate serving of his own. The 22-year-old will play seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic or world No 1 Jannik Sinner in Sunday's final. Alcaraz has beaten Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals and holds an 8-4 edge over Sinner in their 12 meetings. Taylor Fritz leaves Centre Court after losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
