Yankees Aaron Boone Provides Critical Aaron Judge Injury Update

The New York Yankees have struggled since the All-Star break, and it doesn't help that they've been forced to make uncomfortable roster decisions because of Aaron Judge's elbow injury.
Earlier this month, Judge was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his throwing arm. This kind of injury impacts the throwing motion for a baseball player, but nothing else. As a result, Judge has been forced to become the team's everyday designated hitter.
That becomes an issue when the Yankees need to find a spot in the lineup for DH Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton has begun playing outfield for the first time in two years since Judge suffered the injury.
But manager Aaron Boone recently provided quite a critical update to Judge's throwing progression.

ARLINGTON, TX - AUGUST 6: Aaron Judge #99 of the New York Yankees reacts after a called third strike during the third inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on August 6, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. MoreBoone revealed that he's hopeful that Judge can return to the outfield during the team's next road trip. This road trip spans from Aug. 15-20 with two series against the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.
This return would improve the Yankees' defense by a lot.
While Judge likely isn't going to win a Gold Glove award in the outfield, he's an above-average fielder with good range and a great arm when healthy. This kind of defense in place of Stanton, who's near the bottom of the league in sprint speed, would be a major upgrade.
This would also allow Stanton to play every day again, rather than sitting every other day as his body recovers from playing the field.

Giants place Matt Chapman on IL amid third baseman's struggles
Matt Chapman hasn't seemed quite right since returning from a right-hand injury last month, batting .200 in 31 games, and Friday, after the San Francisco Giants got the results of an MRI, they placed their Gold Glove third baseman on the injured list. Chapman initially was hurt when he landed awkwardly on his hand while diving back to first base in a game against the Astros on June 8, and he missed 23 games while recovering. His offensive struggles are notable the past three weeks: He's 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position since July 22 and 3-for-35 in those situations since June 6. This is one reason the team's offense hasn't thrived: Since the start of the 2024 season, the Giants are 53-19 in games in which Chapman drives in at least one run. The Giants have a natural fill-in at the ready because Casey Schmitt is a more than solid third baseman. With Schmitt at third, Christian Koss got another start at second base Friday. More For You Inside Justin Verlander's quest to perfect his pitches, still trying to 'find it' for Giants Something is clearly wrong with the Giants. Is it Bob Melvin? Chapman's IL placement freed up a roster spot for Friday starter Landen Roupp, just off the IL after missing three starts with elbow inflammation. The Giants also added reliever Keaton Winn to the roster Friday. He'll fill in while Ryan Walker is on the paternity list; Walker and his wife, Alexis, were expecting their second child.

Cardinals' Brendan Donovan scratched from lineup versus Yankees due to foot soreness
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Brendan Donovan was scratched from Friday's game against the New York Yankees with left foot soreness. Donovan had been scheduled to bat leadoff and play second base. Donovan has been dealing with leg and foot injuries since missing four games after being removed from a game against Toronto on June 10 with a sprained capsule in his left big toe. Donovan was also held out of St. Louis' contests on Aug. 10-11 against the Cubs with left groin soreness. Donovan is batting .279 with nine home runs and 45 RBIs this season, but has hit .234 in 46 games since injuring his toe. St. Louis was already set to play short-handed on Friday as Willson Contreras remained out of the lineup for a second consecutive game with a right foot contusion sustained when he was hit by a pitch from Colorado's Kyle Freeland on Tuesday night. ___ AP MLB:
