Karan Johar On Bollywood's Herd Mentality: "After Chhaava And Stree, Everyone Wants To Make Historicals And Horror-Comedies"

New Delhi: Karan Johar recently got candid about how the latest trend of "herd mentality" in Bollywood is plaguing the film industry more than ever. He elaborated by saying that with blockbusters like Chhaava and Stree, everyone wants to now make historicals and horror-comedies, as they seem to have cracked the code to keep the audience interested. He further shared how he wants to focus on individualism. Karan added that he was asked about his universe of films like the trending horror-comedy verse, and he said his verse was cinema itself. What's Happening Karan Johar recently spoke about how everyone in the film industry is trying to copy each other's success stories. Speaking of the ongoing "herd mentality" that seems to be prevalent in the film business, Karan told Bollywood Hungama, "I think it is everybody grappling to do what others are doing. We see Pushpa running and catering so strongly to the tier-2 and tier-3 audiences, and suddenly, we will see 20 others wanting to do the same. You see Chhaava working, everybody would want to make historicals. Stree and everybody wants to make horror comedies. Those worked because they were individually strong, and there was no other option in that genre. It was a unique thought that made those films work." He added, "We all need to have individual thoughts that are unique to ourselves. Someone asked me the other day, 'Do you have a universe?' I was like, 'As in?' They were like, 'A spy universe or a cop universe.' I was like, 'My universe is cinema itself.' I am not here to build universes, I am here to tell stories. In that story if there's a universe, then why not?" Karan's Latest Achievements Karan Johar recently attended the Cannes 2025 Film Festival. Neeraj Ghaywan's film Homebound, which had Karan Johar as one of its producers, premiered in the Un Certain Regard category. The cast featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa were also present. In A Nutshell Karan Johar shared his thoughts on Bollywood emulating the tried-and-tested formula of successful films. He spoke about the "herd-mentality" phenomenon where everyone now wants to make horror comedies and historicals after blockbusters like the Stree franchise and recently Chhaava.

Fact Check: Is Vicky Kaushal joining Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in YRF spy universe? Here's the truth

Vicky Kaushal is on cloud nine ever since he delivered a Rs 500 crore grosser at the Indian box office. The actor has proved his acting mettle time and again and established himself among the most bankable young stars. Ever since Chaavaa was released and emerged as a true-blue blockbuster, Vicky has been receiving multiple exciting offers. Currently, social media is buzzing with the news of Kaushal entering the popular YRF spy universe. However, the reports are vague and untrue! As per a source close to the development, Vicky Kaushal is not joining the spy universe. The production banner definitely has a plan to expand the spyverse with the inclusion of new actors playing different characters, but nothing is concrete with Vicky Kaushal as of now. Yash Raj Films is primarily focusing on the War 2 release Yash Raj Films is fully invested in War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kiara Advani, and Jr NTR. While the teaser of War 2 received a positive reception, the makers are set to begin the promotional campaign soon. The next spy universe movie from YRF will be Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari. Reportedly, Bobby Deol is playing a crucial role in the movie. Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha is locked to release on Christmas 2025, marking the first female-led spy movie of the popular cinematic universe. Cinema Without Borders: Of love and hatred—The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo

The barren, dusty landscape gives the feel of an American Western but is punctured by the colours and brightness, verve and vitality of the trans community. They are all named after colourful birds with drab and dull miners on their hunt. This sense of contrasts and contradictions takes several other forms—the emotions and drama get interspersed with humour, violence gets balanced by unconditional love and brutality is offset by tremendous grace. Cespedes' narrative does get needlessly protracted and overtly didactic at points but he does manage to create a compelling universe thanks to the production design (Nicolas Roses and Oscar Rios Quiroz of the Art Department) and cinematography (Angello Faccini). A world that you carry home and that stays in your mind long after the film is over. Needless to say, Cespedes gets ample strength and support from his phenomenal large ensemble. Cortes brings an unusual depth to her character that goes way beyond her young age. Dinamarca is spontaneous and natural as Mama Boa, despite being a non-professional actor. The most compelling presence is of Catalan as Flamenco who uses body language, face and expressive eyes to great effect. Totally mesmerising! In the pride month, and with transgender rights under siege globally, specially USA and UK, it feels fitting to look back at the Chile-France-Germany-Spain-Belgium co-production that won the Un Certain Regard prize at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival. The bigotry and otherising at its core haven't quite gone away but have acquired myriad other forms, be it to do with sexuality or caste, class, gender or religion.
