I moved to Australia for a dream life - but it wasn't all it's cracked up to be. Here's why I prefer my rainy hometown
An Irish woman who lived in Australia for 15 months has revealed the reasons she moved back home after the 'three-month honeymoon bubble burst'.
Fitness influencer Maria Ryan, from Galway, said that while living in Australia was like being on 'a holiday in Spain but constantly', she felt like her life 'wasn't moving forward'.
She said the Aussie soap Home and Away inspired her to move but when she landed in Sydney, it wasn't like the Australia she had envisioned.
Maria described the city as more 'fast-paced' than she imagined so she relocated to the sunny Gold Coast.
The 28-year-old said she loved the people and sunrises but admitted there was 'nothing really more to it than that'.
Maria is now living back home in Galway where she says she feels more 'content' - and many were quick to agree with her hot takes.
'If you have ever lived in Australia, you're currently there or you've moved home or you've ever been there, you will know what I mean to say, you kind of decide within three months whether you think you're going to be there long term, whether it's just a fun thing for a year or so,' she explained in a TikTok video.
The runner said she was originally based in Sydney when she relocated in September 2023 but quickly realised she 'had moved to the wrong part of Australia'.
'Everyone moves to Sydney, to be honest, and I'm not sure why that is,' she said.
'Sydney was more city, fast-paced. It kind of feels like a L ondon of Australia - that's my own fault because if you do enough research you would realise that.
'After going to visit the G old Coast and Byron, that was more the Australia that I had envisioned.'
Maria said that after three months, it was clear to her that Australia was never going to be her 'forever home'.
'I obviously knew I wasn't going to permanently settle down there - it was one, too far away and then also, I really liked it, I don't know if you'll understand this if you have been there, it kind of feels like a holiday in Spain but constantly,' she said.
'There was a point where I felt like my life wasn't moving forward.'
Maria said that on the Gold Coast she lived her 'Home and Away dream' doing daily sunrise runs and meeting 'amazing people' but felt there was 'nothing really more to it than that'.
When she visited home for Christmas, she said she felt 'really content'.
'I see a lot of people's stories from Australia because obviously I have a lot of friends still over there and I see it and I'm so glad that they're having a great time and I'm so happy for them but it's not a missing thing that I have for it,' she explained.
'I've lived in America, England and Australia and I think when you're a hopper, you know that some places are going to be a forever home or others are going to be a one-year thing.
'I've been really content since I've been home.'
Maria's thoughts struck a chord with some viewers who are planning to return to their home countries after living in Australia.
'I'm currently in Melbourne from the UK and I completely agree with you. That's why I've booked my ticket back and I'm grateful of the experience in Australia but as you said this chapter needs to be closed,' one woman said.
'I've just moved home after 18 months in Australia and agree with everything you said. It's a gorgeous country but has made me realise how to appreciate the little things at home and family time,' a second wrote.
'Love this, currently on the way home after 18 months in Perth and I absolutely loved it and will miss it so so so much but there is honestly no place like home in my personal opinion! Settling in Australia is not for everyone,' a third agreed.
'Can relate to this so much! Since I've come home from Australia, I feel like I've a similar life at home to being there, because I've taken the fitness side, love of the outdoors etc with me,' one viewer chimed in.
'So refreshing to hear this! It's definitely been glamorised on social media to move here but it's not that easy. You gave it such a good try, and how amazing is that!' someone added.
However, others said they couldn't imagine moving anywhere else after settling in Australia.
'Just so hard to live back at home... the rent, cost of living. Don't think I would have much to go back to,' one expat wrote.
'I think I knew I loved it the first time I came. I didn't want to go home and then I spent seven years wanting to back. It's interesting hearing other people's perspectives,' another commented.
'I have definitely learned to appreciate England more when I go home now. I miss the cute countryside and pub culture, the proximity to other countries. Some things I don't miss so much.'

Sydney Sweeney shows off FIVE different looks in one day including chic suits and a dramatic gown during incredibly stylish press tour for her new film Echo Valley
Sydney Sweeney stepped out in no less than five different looks as she promoted her new film, Echo Valley, in New York on Wednesday. Especially in recent years, actresses and actors have used fashion to complement their promotional tours and draw attention to the upcoming film release. And the Hollywood actress, 27, took full advantage of the marketing technique as she stepped out in an array of eye-catching looks this week. First thing in the morning, Sydney, who has been working with working with stylist Molly Dickson, was spotted leaving her hotel wearing a chic nautical Coperni look. Sydney wore a black button-through vest with a white striped sailor collar, which she styled with a pleated white mini skirt with a fun asymmetrical hem. The White Lotus star completed the ensemble with a pair of black Wayfarer sunglasses and sported a pair of heeled knee-high boots. By the time she arrived for her Good Morning America appearance, Sweeney had swapped into an archival Jean Paul Gaultier suit dress. Embracing the 'no pants trend', Sydney showed of her toned legs in a pair of brown pumps, which perfectly complemented the tone of the jacket and tie. The jacket is from Jean Paul Gaultier's fall 2005 collection that was sewn up the centre and teamed with a matching tie. Sydney has embraced the fashion marathon element of the press tour and was later seen out again in another brown ensemble. This time, Sydney was sporting Oscar de la Renta from the fashion house's fall 2025 collection as she once again exited her luxury hotel. Her outfit was a lightly blue checked silk co-ord, including a short-sleeved pussy bow blouse teamed with a pair of wide-legged trousers. She added a further pop of colour with a pair of pale blue heels, while accessorising with quirky shades and a cream clutch bag. By the evening, Sydney was onto her third look as she attended the film's premiere. The starlet embraced 'method dressing' as she attended the event wearing a scarlet gown, which boasted a train following her down the carpet. The dress appeared to be a nod to a moment she has previously discussed in the film, where she arrives on her mother's doorstep covered in blood. Sydney stars opposite Julianne Moore in the psychological thriller, where she plays an addict named Claire and follows the story of how a mother will go for their child. Speaking about the plot previously, Sydney said: 'My character Claire is not the best daughter and she puts her mom through a lot. Claire shows up covered in blood at her mother's doorstep. She attended the premiere with Julianne and Kyle MacLachlan, who plays her father, where the sizzling sensation put her décolletage on display in a plunging gown. Her luxurious scarlet frock was cinched in around her enviably svelte midsection before flowing into a luxurious skirt that flowed across the floor. With ruched accents around her tiny waistline, the sumptuous dress accentuated Sydney's curves to full advantage as she sauntered across the carpet. She later looked incredible as she headed to the afterparty of her Echo Valley premiere at Lincoln Ristorante. She slipped into a figure-hugging cocktail dress as she celebrated the release of the film The Hollywood star, who styled the look with a pair of red pumps, stopped to snap selfies with a fan who caught her outside the swanky eatery Sydney slipped into a figure-hugging cocktail dress as she celebrated the release of the film. The multiple outings came shortly after she finally broke her silence on her split from Jonathan Davino. Sydney and Jonathan, 41, started dating 2018 and got engaged in 2022 but kept their romance largely out of the public eye. Over the past few months, though, they were trailed by a swirl of rumors that they had called off the wedding, fueled by Sydney's sightings without his ring. Last week she finally put the swirling speculation to bed by confirming her relationship status while plugging her new film to The Times. When she was asked whether she was still planning her wedding, she replied: 'No,' and when prodded on whether she was single, she said: 'Yes.' Julianne posed proudly beside Sydney at the premiere this Wednesday, demonstrating the resemblance between the pair. The Oscar-winning actress brought back memories of the 1980s in a black gown with raised shoulders that appeared to have been done in velvet or velour. Her unmistakable red hair was teased into a silken bob, and her makeup brought out a luminous glow in her complexion as she beamed next to her onscreen daughter. Julianne attended the gala at AMC Lincoln Square on the arm of her casually dressed son Caleb Freundlich, who has followed her footsteps into showbiz and become a singer-songwriter under the name Caleb Moore. Sydney and Julianne also gathered together for a group shot with their co-star Kyle MacLachlan, who plays the husband of Julianne's character. Kyle, Julianne and Sydney also stood for pictures with their dashing castmates Edmund Donovan, Domhnall Gleeson and Albert Jones. Directed by Michael Pearce, the film also features Fiona Shaw, who is best known to moviegoers around the world as Harry Potter's Aunt Petunia. Echo Valley will receive a limited theatrical release in the United States this Friday, and next Friday will become more widely available on Apple TV+.

Scientists hail breakthrough putting them on ‘pathway to an HIV cure'
Researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute in Melbourne, Australia have discovered a way to force HIV out of hiding within white blood cells, a development previously considered impossible. The team developed a new type of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) that allows mRNA technology to be delivered to blood cells, instructing them to reveal the virus. Dr Paula Cevaal said the team was initially skeptical of the results but repeated testing confirmed the breakthrough. The new method has shown unprecedented success in revealing the virus, offering hope for a potential HIV cure, though further animal and human trials are needed. The study used cells donated by HIV patients. Future research will focus on whether the immune system can effectively tackle the revealed virus, with years of safety testing anticipated before human trials.

Mark Wahlberg tells Scots brothers their Pacific rowing bid ‘could be a movie'
Three Scottish brothers aiming to become the fastest people to row across the Pacific have received a surprise video call from Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg, who told them their record-breaking bid 'could be a movie'. The Perfect Storm star spoke to Ewan, Jamie and Lachlan Maclean 54 days into their bid to row 9,000 miles non-stop and unsupported from Lima, Peru to Sydney, Australia. As well as aiming to set a record for the fastest row across the world's largest ocean, the brothers are hoping to raise £1 million for clean water projects in Madagascar. Wahlberg told the brothers that he was 'so inspired' by their undertaking, which has seen them battle salt sores, relentless weather and broken equipment during more than seven weeks at sea. 'You're badasses doing something no one else would think of', he told them. 'This could be a movie. The best films I've done are based on true stories – ordinary people doing extraordinary things. 'No way I'd row an ocean, but I'd play one of you guys in a movie.' He added: 'What you guys are doing is next level. You're living out a sense of purpose – combining passion with impact. 'That's rare, and it's humbling to watch. People need to hear about what you're doing.' Ewan Maclean told the actor that speaking to him from the middle of the Pacific was 'probably the most surreal situation I've ever been in'. Lachlan added: 'We're operating on such little sleep that we thought it could all have been a hallucination.' Wahlberg responded that he 'couldn't be more inspired by the grit, the determination, the resiliency' that the brothers were showing. He continued: 'What you guys are doing for such an amazing cause, and how hard you're willing to sacrifice yourself and your own wellbeing for the good of others, is so inspiring. 'For you guys to do this under your own free will – it's pretty crazy. Some would say we might need to give you a couple of psychological examinations.' Wahlberg, who owns restaurants in Sydney and the Gold Coast, also told the brothers he would 'have a meal waiting for you' at the finish line. Asked about conditions so far, Ewan replied that 'it's been much harder than expected', but that earlier that day they had seen 'dolphins surfing near the boat, and that lifted our spirits'. Wahlberg quipped: 'You guys are probably getting a lot more sunshine than you're used to at home.' He added: 'I've been fortunate enough to visit a couple of times and it's a beautiful, beautiful country. So you guys are making your homeland proud.' The brothers expect to spend more than 100 days on board their 28-foot carbon fibre boat, named Rose Emily in honour of their late sister.
