Kia Carens Clavis EV vs BYD eMax 7: Which electric MPV will you pick
Kia India has formally joined the all-electric MPV class with the introduction of the Carens Clavis EV. The all-electric vehicle is being offered only as a seven-seater and is the company's first mass-market EV for Indian customers. Locally produced with the option of multiple batteries, the Carens Clavis EV is also supported by connected charging solutions through the MyKia app, which grants access to more than 11,000 charging stations nationwide.
With its premium positioning and affordable price, the Clavis EV also takes on the better-established BYD eMax 7—a completely-imported electric MPV from China that is already well-established in the premium EV segment. Both of these models appeal to families as well as long-distance users, so their variations in terms of pricing, performance, and usability become central to aiding customers in their decision-making as to which one represents the better deal.

Perhaps the biggest strength of the Kia Carens Clavis EV is its price. The MPV comes in four trims: HTK+, HTX, ER HTX, and ER HTX+, priced between ₹ 17.99 lakh and ₹ 24.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Compared with this, the BYD eMax 7 comes in two main trims—Premium and Superior—and both can be had with a six-seater or seven-seater layout. The prices of the eMax 7 vary from ₹ 26.90 lakh to ₹ 29.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
This implies the Clavis EV cuts the price of the eMax 7 at least by ₹ 6 lakh at the base level, and up to ₹ 8 lakh on certain trims. Even the range-topping variant of the Kia is cheaper than the base variant of the BYD, making it an option preferred by those valuing cost. Kia Carens Clavis EV vs BYD eMax 7: Battery and performance
When it comes to battery and powertrain configurations, both MPVs offer multiple options. The Kia Carens Clavis EV shares its battery packs with the Hyundai Creta EV, providing two lithium-ion battery options: a 42 kWh pack and a larger 51.4 kWh unit. The smaller battery is paired with an electric motor that produces 133 bhp, while the larger battery comes with a motor delivering 169 bhp. In both cases, the peak torque remains constant at 255 Nm. The BYD eMax 7, meanwhile, is positioned as a more powerful offering. It also gets two battery pack choices—55.4 kWh and 71.8 kWh. The smaller pack delivers 161 bhp, while the larger battery powers a motor producing 201 bhp. Both variants of the eMax 7 generate a peak torque of 310 Nm. On paper, the BYD clearly offers more performance, especially for highway cruising and heavier loads. However, Kia's approach seems to favour a balance between everyday practicality and affordability, making it more suitable for urban and semi-urban commutes. Kia Carens Clavis EV vs BYD eMax 7: Range
Range is another critical area of comparison, especially for families and intercity travelers. The Kia Carens Clavis EV offers an ARAI-certified MIDC range of 404 km for the 42 kWh battery and 490 km for the 51.4 kWh version. These figures suggest that the MPV should be able to handle most long commutes with a single overnight charge.
The BYD eMax 7, on the other hand, provides even higher range figures—420 km for the 55.4 kWh battery and 530 km for the larger 71.8 kWh pack. However, it is important to note that these numbers are based on the NEDC cycle, which is known to be less conservative than the MIDC or WLTP standards. This means that real-world driving range for both MPVs may not differ as drastically as the numbers suggest. Nonetheless, for buyers solely focused on higher range estimates, the BYD does hold a marginal advantage.

Elon Musk's politics hit Tesla sales in Europe's biggest car markets
Tesla's new car registrations in Britain and Germany, Europe's biggest auto markets, more than halved in July from a year earlier, as CEO Elon Musk's political views deter buyers and the company grapples with regulatory challenges. Competition has also increased and sales of EVs made by China's BYD rose nearly five-fold in Germany and over four-fold in Britain in July, official industry data showed on Tuesday. Data last week showed a revamp of Tesla's signature Model Y had failed to reverse a fall in sales in major European markets. A Reuters report on Monday found enthusiasm for the brand has plunged since Musk endorsed Donald Trump in the run-up to his re-election last year. Tesla's July registrations - a proxy for sales - dropped by nearly 60% to 987 units in Britain and by over 55% to 1,110 in Germany, official industry data showed on Tuesday, taking the brand's decline in the month to 45% in 10 European markets that together accounted for over 80% of Tesla's first-half sales in the European Union, the UK and the European Free Trade Association. "That markets shrug at poor sales numbers suggests the company's fortunes rest on their ability to bring forward workable self-driving vehicles", said Ben Nelmes, founder of EV data analysis firm New AutoMotive. Since last year, Musk has shifted Tesla's focus to developing self-driving technology from new, affordable models for human drivers. Overall, the total number of newly registered cars in Germany rose by 11.1% to 264,802 vehicles, with sales of electric vehicles up 58% in July to 48,614 units, the German road traffic agency KBA said. The agency also said the sales volumes of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD jumped almost fivefold in July to 1,126 units and more than fivefold to 7,449 units since the beginning of the year. New car registrations in Britain fell about 5% year-on-year in July to 140,154 units, with growth in battery electric vehicle sales moderating to 9.1% in the month, figures from industry body Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed. BYD sales in the country were up over 300% to 3,184 cars sold in the month. Battery electric vehicles are now projected to account for 23.8% of new registrations in 2025, slightly up from the society's previous forecast of 23.5%. "July's dip shows yet again the new car market's sensitivity to external factors, and the pressing need for consumer certainty," SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said in a statement. The new electric car grant offers financial help to encourage people to buy BEVs. However, it's still unclear which models will be eligible, so some buyers are waiting, the SMMT said.

Tesla's China-Made EV sales drop 8.4% in July amid rising competition
Tesla's sales of China-made electric vehicles fell 8.4 per cent in July from a year earlier, reversing a small increase in June, amid rising competition from rivals offering lower-priced new models. Deliveries of China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, including exports to Europe and other markets, reached 67,886 cars last month, down 5.2 per cent from June, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed on Monday. Top Chinese rival BYD, with its Ocean and Dynasty lineups of EVs and plug-in hybrids, delivered almost flat global passenger car sales at 341,300 vehicles in July. Tesla's July reading followed a 0.8 per cent rise year-on-year in sales of its China-made EVs in June, which ended an eight-month losing streak, but fell short of stopping quarterly declines. Elon Musk's EV company, grappling with weak demand and a backlash among some consumers against his political views, posted its biggest quarterly sales decline globally in over a decade in the second quarter.

With BYD in fast lane, Tesla's Europe sales in July decline over 50% YoY
Tesla continues to post steep sales declines in Europe's biggest electric vehicle (EV) markets, where the Elon Musk-led automaker is ceding significant share to China's BYD. In both Germany and the UK—by far the two leading countries for battery-electric vehicle registrations in Europe—Tesla's July sales fell by more than half compared with a year ago, according to figures reported Tuesday. BYD, by contrast, more than quadrupled registrations in each country. Last week, the national auto association for France—the No 3 market in Europe by EV sales—reported that Tesla's registrations dropped 27 per cent in July and were down almost 40 per cent through the first seven months of the year. Tesla pinned the blame for its early-year sales weakness on manufacturing disruptions linked to changing over production lines for its most important vehicle, the Model Y. But the company's slump has carried on even as it's ramped up output of the redesigned SUV, adding to concerns that its chief executive officer's polarizing and often politically charged persona have damaged Tesla's brand. On Monday, the company announced that it had approved an interim award of about $30 billion worth of Tesla stock to Musk as a legal fight over his 2018 pay package drags on. Tesla's struggles have created an opening for leading European manufacturers, as well as BYD. The Chinese automaker sold more fully electric cars in Europe than Tesla for the first time ever in April. Some analysts are predicting BYD will pull ahead of Tesla globally for the full year — and that's without BYDs even being available in Tesla's home market, the US. In Germany—Europe's biggest auto market and the home of Tesla's sole assembly plant in the region— BYD outsold Tesla for the third time this year in July.
