Decode Politics: Amit Shah, Nitish Kumar laying stone of Sita temple, how will it play out in Bihar polls?

Accompanied by Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is laying the foundation stone for the re-development of the Mata Janaki temple at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi in the Mithila region on Thursday afternoon, launching a major project at the site which is believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita.
The proposed revamp and renovation of the Sita temple at Punaura Dham is set to be one of the key issues of the ruling NDA in the state Assembly polls due in three months. Shah had announced this project at a 'Shashwat Mithila Mahotsav 2025' event in Ahmedabad in March this year.
The project, which seeks to emulate the scale and grandeur of Ayodhya's Ram temple, was first sanctioned in September 2023 alongside a larger project to develop religious tourism. At the time, the JD(U) and the RJD were part of the ruling Mahagathbandhan in the state.
The JD(U) switched back to the NDA in January 2024, marking a political shift that has coincided with an aggressive push on infrastructure and religious tourism projects ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The Nitish government's plan for Sitamarhi is in place, even as it features in the Centre's list of 15 tourism-cum-religious places on the Ramayana Circuit, which is one of the 15 thematic circuits identified for development under the Swadesh Darshan scheme of the Union Ministry of Tourism. The projects under the scheme are identified in consultation with the state governments or Union Territory administrations.
The Bihar government's plan includes the setting up of a parikrama path (a path to circumambulate the temple) with a roof and sandstone pillars. A Sita Vatika (Sita's garden), Luv-Kush Vatika (Luv-Kush garden) and a shanti mandap (area for meditation) are also being planned besides a cafeteria and a parking lot. A 3-D animation film, depicting Sita's life, is also in the pipeline.
As a part of the plan, which is aimed to be completed within 11 months, the state's tourism department is also working to redevelop at least a dozen sites believed to be associated with Lord Ram and Sita.
On July 1 this year, the Nitish Cabinet sanctioned Rs 882.87 crore for the project. Of this, Rs 137 crore has been allocated for the renovation of the existing temple and its surroundings, Rs 728 crore for tourism-related infrastructure, and Rs 16 crore for a decade of comprehensive maintenance.
In another Cabinet meeting on July 29, a revised estimate of Rs 165.57 crore was also cleared for the acquisition of an additional 50 acres of land, apart from the 17 acres currently available at temple premises. The new land will be used for developing tourism infrastructure and related facilities, officials informed.
The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) will be the executing agency of the project. The state government also constituted a nine-member trust, 'Shree Janaki Janm Bhumi Punaura Dham Mandir Nyas Samiti' on June 26 to oversee the construction and management of the temple.
According to officials, the Trust will be chaired by the Chief Secretary, with the Development Commissioner as its vice-chairman. The District Magistrate and Deputy Development Commissioner of Sitamarhi will serve as the Trust's secretary and treasurer, respectively. It will also have members from the Mahanth of Punaura Dham Mutt, Divisional Commissioner of Tirhut, and officials from tourism, road construction, and urban development and housing departments. 'The Trust's bank account will be jointly operated by the secretary and treasurer,' an official said.
Punaura Dham is regarded by Hindus as Sita's birthplace. Located around 5 km from Sitamarhi town, near the India-Nepal border, it holds religious significance for pilgrims from Bihar and other states.
The project is being developed as part of the Ramayana circuit, a broader initiative linking Ayodhya, Sitamarhi, and Janakpur in Nepal, to boost religious tourism and pilgrimage routes.
Due to its long association with socialist politics, Hindutva has not been a decisive factor in the Bihar elections. After the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, the BJP fared poorly in the subsequent elections. In the 1995 Assembly elections, the party managed to get only 41 of the 324 (undivided Bihar) seats. The BJP has also not been able to dominate electorally when it has contested alone. In the 2015 elections, despite the Narendra Modi wave, the party managed to win only 91 of the 243 seats.
This is also not the first time that a political party or coalition has tried to focus on Sita.
During his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said at a public meeting, 'Yeh (RSS) 'Jai Siya Ram' kabhi nahi kehte. Inhone Sita ji ko naare se nikaal diya… Yeh hamare itihaas ke khilaaf kaam kiya inhone (The RSS workers never say 'Jai Siya Ram'. They have removed Sita from the salutation. This is something that is against our history). I am telling you (Congress workers), every time you come across an RSS worker, ask them to say 'Jai Siya Ram'. Kyunki, jitne jaroori Ram the, utni jaroori hi Sita ji thi (because Sita is as significant as Ram).'

Robert Vadra got 3.5 acre Gurgaon land as bribe: ED

In its July 17 chargesheet, the Enforcement Directorate alleged that Robert Vadra was given a 3.5-acre plot in Gurgaon's Sector 83 as a bribe, disputing his assertion that he purchased it for ₹7.5 crore. Vadra later sold the land to DLF for ₹58 crore. "Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd gave this land as bribe to Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd without any payment so that Robert Vadra, director of SLHPL, could help OPPL in getting housing license in the same village from the then minister of town and country planning, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, by his personal influence because Vadra is son-in-law of the (then) Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bhupinder Singh Hooda was also CM of Congress govt," ED has alleged in its prosecution complaint - the agency's term for a chargesheet in a money laundering case. "Therefore, Vadra had personal influence on Bhupinder Hooda," ED stated. A special PMLA court has issued notice to Vadra for Aug 28 to take cognisance of the complaint and, if it concurs with the findings, initiate the framing of charges. TOI sought comments from Vadra's lawyer but did not receive any response. The chargesheet may also impact Vadra's spouse, Priyanka Gandhi, who was elected to Lok Sabha from Wayanad in Nov. The prosecution complaint has mentioned attachment of at least three high-value properties - totalling 39.7 acres in Amipur village in Faridabad - allegedly owned by Vadra but not disclosed in her poll affidavit. The alleged non-disclosure has been challenged before the Kerala HC, which has issued a notice to her. Under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, false or non-disclosure in affidavits is treated as a corrupt practice, punishable with disqualification and even July 16, ED said it had attached properties worth over Rs 37 crore allegedly linked to Vadra. The next day, it filed the chargesheet in the Gurgaon land deal case. Vadra and 10 others, including OPPL promoter-directors Satyanand Yajee and Kewal Singh Virk, have been accused of laundering "proceeds of crime" worth Rs 58 has examined and recorded statements of at least 20 witnesses, including Haryana govt officials and OPPL promoters, who initially claimed Vadra paid Rs 7.5 crore. ED has called this statement asked Gurgaon police to investigate Vadra's claimed payment. A deputy commissioner of police found that Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd purchased 3.53 acres from OPPL via sale deed No. 4928 on Feb 12, 2008. Payment was shown as made via cheque no. 607251. "The said cheque has never been encashed and the buyer company paid the consideration after six months through another cheque," the DCP said. "Thus, the buyer company made a false statement of consideration while executing the sale deed."ED's chargesheet said the sale deed was based on a false statement and the sale was benami. The cheque used was issued by Skylight Realty Pvt Ltd, not the buyer company SLHPL, which had capital of only Rs 1 lakh. SLRPL too did not have Rs 7.5 crore in its bank account. ED further claimed that the Rs 45 lakh stamp duty was paid by seller, not by SLHPL.

Pakistan hits JACKPOT due to Trump's tariff, set to become rich, Indian farmers may suffer due to..., may decide to switch to...

New Delhi: The decision of US President Donald Trump to impose a tariff of 50% on exports from India, especially on Indian Basmati rice, is going to affect not only the economies of both countries but also have an impact on the global economy. Indian traders, especially Basmati farmers and exporters of Punjab and Haryana, are very much worried and uncertain, hoping that the government will help them come out of this mess. Moreover, this decision has been taken at a time when prices are already falling, and uncertainty has increased in the market. When did the USA impose the tariff on India? America imposed the tariff on August 7 after Trump's executive order, in which an additional penalty of 25% was added on India's purchase of oil from Russia and with the already applicable 25% reciprocal tariff, the total tariff became 50%. This 50% tariff will be applicable from August 28. Why is it an advantage for Pakistan? The imposition of a 50% tariff on India will work in Pakistan's favour, as it has given Pakistan a big lead over India in the American market. This is because only a 19% tariff has been imposed on Pakistan. These two different tariff rates, i.e., 19% and 50% will give Pakistan a huge margin of 31% in Basmati exports as Indian Basmati rice will cost 31% more to the American customers. What do Indian traders say? 'Pakistani traders have already started taking orders from America, but Indian traders are not even able to negotiate due to the price difference,' said Vice-President of Basmati Exporters Association Ranjit Singh Josan as quoted by a report in the Hindustan Times. Josan added that this is causing a loss to India and benefiting Pakistan. What is the biggest fear of Indian farmers? The tariff has been imposed at a time when the prices of famous varieties like 1121 and 1509 have already fallen from Rs 4,500 per quintal to Rs 3,500-Rs 3,600. Now there is a fear that the prices may reach Rs 3,000. In such a situation, the tariff is a double blow. 'If this situation continues, farmers will leave Basmati and go back to ordinary rice,' said Gurbakshish Singh, a farmer from Tarn Taran in Punjab, as reported by news18. Price difference between Indian and Pakistani Basmati rice in the USA? One ton of Basmati rice bought in the USA for $1,200 will cost an additional $600 if imported from India, while importing it from Pakistan will cost only $228 extra. Mill owners are not able to sell their old stock.
