Focus on halting of Lord Kallazhagar at every mandagapadi before his entry into Vaigai
Madurai City Police, in association with the district administration, have almost completed the ground work for the grand entry of Lord Kallazhagar into Vaigai river on Monday morning.
Right from getting the dug-up road levelled and scaffolding of underconstruction bridges covered and putting barricades on roads and at the riverbed with lighting facilities, the works are almost complete.
As part of crime prevention, the police have installed CCTV cameras with AI facility and planned to give safety pins to women for fastening their gold ornaments. They have also prepared tags for children with their names and contact details of parents for easy identification in crowd. Flex boards of QR codes to reach out to the police during emergencies have been put up at vantage points.
The focus of the police has now turned towards crowd management on Lord Kallazhagar reaching Prasanna Venkatachalapthy Temple at Tallakulam on Sunday night till the early morning of Monday when He enters the Vaigai.
'The stretch of Alagarkoil Road between Tallakulam temple and the river would easily witness at least 70,000 people. Though they would have had the darshan of Lord Kallazhagar during Ethir Sevai, most of the devotees show keen interest in having another glimpse of the deity mounted on the golden horse palanquin,' said a senior police officer.
With the bitter experience of a stampede-like situation claiming four lives at Goripalayam during the 2022 Chithrai festival, the City Police are doubly alert to ensure smooth procession this year.
'The inordinate delay in taking Lord Kallazhagar out of Tallakulam temple led to skipping of most of the 50-odd mandagapadies between Tallakulam and the Vaigai river,' another police officer recalled.
The sea of devotees was waiting to have a darshan of the deity leisurely as the procession would stop for at around five minutes at each mandagapadi. However, they were caught unawares with the unannounced skipping of halts at most of the mandagapadies.
'This resulted in the entire crowd from near Tamukkam ground to rush behind the deity towards Goripalayam junction leading to an avoidable commotion,' he added. The already tired policemen could not control the frenzied crowd.
'This time, we have planned to keep up with the timings so that there was adequate time for the procession to halt at every mandagapadi. We are working closely with HR&CE officials as it would take at least four hours for the procession to cross this stretch,' he added.

TMBU under fire over fake Admit cards; Controller of examination served show cause, assistant suspended
Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) in Bihar is under fire after a number of students lodged complaints with the University alleging the staff in the examination department extorted money from them for issuing admit cards and mark sheets which later turned out to be fake. Taking strong note of the incident, the vice chancellor (VC) Prof Jawahar Lal has constituted a team to probe the allegations. The controller of examination (CE) Prof Krishna Kumar has been served show cause. 'On the basis of preliminary investigation, the assistant Sanjay Kumar has been suspended and three clerical staff Mohammad Taslim, Shashi Kumar and Manik Chand have been transferred,' public relation officer (PRO) of VC, Prof Deepak Kumar Dinkar told HT over phone on Friday. He said, '17 mobile phones of all the staff under suspicion have been seized for further investigation and strict legal action will be taken against all those involved in it.' He said, 'The controller of examination Prof Krishna Kumar has been served show cause notice today (Friday) and he has been asked to submit his explanation within 24 hours.' He said that one contractual staff Avineet Kumar has been stopped from visiting the examination department till investigation concludes. Notably a number of students of the TMBU were debarred from appearing at the ongoing examination of the final year of graduation (Old course) after their admit cards were found to be fake. Later these students approached the CE and lodged complaints alleging that they had paid ₹3000 to 8000 to Sanjay Kumar for the admit cards. Even one student who appeared with his mark sheet accused the same staff of demanding ₹8000 from him for issuing a mark sheet with increased marks. 'When I asked for CLC (College leaving certificate) much to my chagrin, they declared my mark sheet fake,' Manish Kumar of Marwari College said, prompting him to reach the staff. 'But I found the staff absent and his phone was found switched off,' he told HT. As many as 30 students were debarred from appearing at the examination as their admit cards were found to be fake. Reliable sources within university told HT, 'Corruption in the examination department is not new, this has been going on for a long time, however, fortunately or unfortunately the matter has come into light now.'

Hindu Munnani has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the authorities concerned to grant permission for setting up temporary miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu' scheduled be held in Madurai. Justice B. Pugalendhi directed the Madurai City Police to file a counter affidavit. The court was hearing the petition filed by Hindu Munnani's State Secretary S. Muthukumar of Madurai. The petitioner said Hindu Munnani had decided to arrange a gathering of devotees of Lord Murugan on June 22 for the event in Amma Thidal near Pandi Kovil Ring Road. Miniatures of Arupadai Veedugal will be installed, pujas will be performed and prasadam will be distributed to the devotees, he said, adding that sthalapuranam of the six abodes will be displayed. Apart from this, the devotees will be chanting Kanda Shashti Kavacham and Thiruppugazh at the conference. Spiritual and cultural programmes will be held. The place of gathering was a private land and the land owner had given his consent, he said. A representation was made to the Madurai City Police seeking permission to use sound amplifiers during the event. There was no response from the police. The police have been regularly granting permission for using sound amplifiers in Amma Thidal for public meetings. A representation was also made for arranging darshan of the miniatures from June 10 to June 22. The police rejected permission for usage of microphone sets and to set up miniatures and temporary models, the petitioner said. He alleged that the police team came to the place where the miniatures were being made and threatened the workers and volunteers asking them not proceed with the making of the miniatures. The petitioner sought a direction to the police to grant permission to set up the miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the venue and conduct the pujas. The court posted the matter for hearing on June 9.
