Two cops held for looting currency dealer
City police have arrested a serving policeman and a retired cop for allegedly snatching Rs600,000 from a currency exchange dealer. Their third accomplice, who is also a serving cop, is still on the run. Currency exchange dealer Abdullah complained to the City Police that he was sitting in a vehicle with a customer for an exchange transaction when three policemen arrived. Two of them were in uniform, while one was in plain clothes holding a wireless device. They started questioning the complainant. When Abdullah explained that it was a business transaction, the suspects started searching him. The uniformed cops took his mobile phone, with one sitting in the back seat and the other in the front passenger seat of the car. The plainclothes official remained by the motorcycle. The suspects then drove Abdullah to Murree Road, where they stopped at a juice shop. After drinking juice, the official on the motorcycle joined them, and they fled with Rs600,000 near the RDA Park. The police managed to arrest serving policeman Zohaib, who is currently posted in the Rawalpindi Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA), and former policeman Riyasat, who was dismissed from service in 2019. Raids are still ongoing to arrest the third suspect. A police spokesperson said that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the serving cop, who has been served a charge sheet. He made it clear that abuse of power and supporting criminal elements would never be tolerated, and such individuals have no place in the department. The accused would be charged with solid evidence, the spokesman maintained.

One-third of traffic rule violators in Coimbatore alone had paid fine
Only one-third of the traffic rule violators in Coimbatore had paid the penalty while two-third of the violators are yet to pay the fine. The Coimbatore City Police had installed Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras on almost all the roads and these cameras used to capture the number plates of the violating vehicles and challans are generated. In addition, traffic cops used to take pictures of violating vehicles. So far from January 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025, as many as 1,32,733 road rule violation cases totalling ₹12,81,13,100 fines were imposed of which ₹4,25,69,700 alone had been remitted. The remaining two-third of violators have been issued challans and are dodging from paying the penalty. Of the total violators, 21,284 driving licences had been placed under suspension. Of these violators, owners of yellow colour number plate (tourist cabs, trucks, private buses and omni buses) do turn up and pay the penalty yearly. But, the own board vehicle owners (those with white number plates and black letters) either turn up and pay the penalty when they turn up for renewing the fitness certificate of the vehicles or when they sell their vehicles. Of this category, even if they sell their vehicle, they don't change the ownership of the vehicle, especially two-wheelers and four-wheelers, and the penalty remains unpaid. City Police sources said that they are aware of the problem and discussions are on how to overcome this.

Focus on halting of Lord Kallazhagar at every mandagapadi before his entry into Vaigai
Madurai City Police, in association with the district administration, have almost completed the ground work for the grand entry of Lord Kallazhagar into Vaigai river on Monday morning. Right from getting the dug-up road levelled and scaffolding of underconstruction bridges covered and putting barricades on roads and at the riverbed with lighting facilities, the works are almost complete. As part of crime prevention, the police have installed CCTV cameras with AI facility and planned to give safety pins to women for fastening their gold ornaments. They have also prepared tags for children with their names and contact details of parents for easy identification in crowd. Flex boards of QR codes to reach out to the police during emergencies have been put up at vantage points. The focus of the police has now turned towards crowd management on Lord Kallazhagar reaching Prasanna Venkatachalapthy Temple at Tallakulam on Sunday night till the early morning of Monday when He enters the Vaigai. 'The stretch of Alagarkoil Road between Tallakulam temple and the river would easily witness at least 70,000 people. Though they would have had the darshan of Lord Kallazhagar during Ethir Sevai, most of the devotees show keen interest in having another glimpse of the deity mounted on the golden horse palanquin,' said a senior police officer. With the bitter experience of a stampede-like situation claiming four lives at Goripalayam during the 2022 Chithrai festival, the City Police are doubly alert to ensure smooth procession this year. 'The inordinate delay in taking Lord Kallazhagar out of Tallakulam temple led to skipping of most of the 50-odd mandagapadies between Tallakulam and the Vaigai river,' another police officer recalled. The sea of devotees was waiting to have a darshan of the deity leisurely as the procession would stop for at around five minutes at each mandagapadi. However, they were caught unawares with the unannounced skipping of halts at most of the mandagapadies. 'This resulted in the entire crowd from near Tamukkam ground to rush behind the deity towards Goripalayam junction leading to an avoidable commotion,' he added. The already tired policemen could not control the frenzied crowd. 'This time, we have planned to keep up with the timings so that there was adequate time for the procession to halt at every mandagapadi. We are working closely with HR&CE officials as it would take at least four hours for the procession to cross this stretch,' he added.
