Two arrested in human trafficking racket case linked to international cybercrime in Visakhapatnam

The City Police on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) arrested two individuals, including a woman, for their alleged involvement in a human trafficking racket connected to international cybercrime operations. The accused have been identified as L. Suresh and Adilakshmi, both residents of Gajuwaka. With the arrest of the duo, the police were able to prevent five youths from being trafficked out of the country. Addressing the media, Police Commissioner Shankabrata Bagchi said that the accused were running a recruitment agency that targeted unemployed youth, promising them computer-based jobs abroad. The victims were sent to countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Bangkok, and were trapped by cybercrime offenders and forced into illegal activities, he said, adding that the kingpin of the racket has been identified as Vijay Kumar, who is suspected of recruiting at least 150 individuals for such overseas scams. Explaining the modus operandi, Mr. Bagchi said the cybercrime offenders would create fake social media profiles to target elderly and influential people. These fraudsters would lure victims into schemes involving cryptocurrency investments, instant loan offers, honey traps, digital arrests and various financial scams. Mr. Bagchi urged the youth to thoroughly verify the licence of recruitment agencies before engaging with them. He also warned the youth against getting involved in such scams, saying that it might have serious legal consequences, including the issuing of lookout notices. The Police Commissioner also urged the parents to ensure that their children working with such companies return to India promptly. Mr. Bagchi revealed that approximately 150 individuals from the city were currently working with such cybercrime organisations abroad, adding that the police have rescued 87 of them till date. In a bid to create awareness about Cambodia-based job frauds and the dangers of fake job agencies, the police released a poster. These posters will be available at all police stations across the city. 'Nava Samaja Nirmanam' Earlier in the day, Mr. Bagchi launched a programme titled 'Nava Samaja Nirmanam' at Dr. L. Bullayya College. The motto of the programme was to create awareness about drug abuse, road safety and cybercrimes. Mr. Bagchi sensitised a large gathering of students on the current issues and administered them with a pledge to stay away from drugs and cybercrimes.

Janaspandana to ensure transparent grievance redressal: Minister in charge of Mysuru

Minister in charge of Karnataka's Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa on Friday said that the State government is committed to resolving people's problems transparently and eliminating middlemen in grievance redressal. Inaugurating the district-level Janaspandana and e-Pauti campaign at the Zilla Panchayat auditorium, Mr. Mahadevappa said that Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meetings are held every three months, while Janata Darshan programmes are organised every six months to address public grievances directly. 'Officials should provide details on how many petitions received in earlier Janaspandana programmes have been resolved. Applicants whose petitions face legal hurdles must also be informed. People should be made aware of transparent governance,' he directed officials. On Friday, over 200 petitions were received, up from 113 in the previous programme. The Minister said that the data has been compiled on the types of problems raised, departments concerned, petitions resolved, and actions pending. 'The administration will always stand with people to address their grievances,' he assured. He added that direct interaction with the people not only resolves their issues, but also helps address administrative bottlenecks within government offices. 'To eliminate middlemen, Janaspandana programmes will be held every six months to ensure direct contact between citizens and the administration,' he informed. Street vendors, differently-abled persons, and daily-wage workers submitted requests for housing facilities. Their petitions have been collected, and necessary steps have been assured to provide multi-housing facilities. 'Steps will be taken to ensure housing for everyone. Officials must identify economically backward people who are not receiving benefits and extend all necessary facilities to them,' Mr. Mahadevappa said. MLC C.N. Manjegowda, State Guarantee Implementation Committee Chairman H.M. Revanna, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Zilla Panchayat CEO Yukesh Kumar, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, Superintendent of Police N. Vishnuvardhan, MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif, Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Shivaraju, and officials from various other departments were present.

LOGAN, Utah () — Two women have been arrested and charged after forcing their way into a Logan home and attacking a woman in the middle of the night. Mandy Guvench, 40, and Jaymee Nicole Friedli, 31, were both charged with first-degree felony aggravated burglary and misdemeanor assault with injury. New Jersey man gored by bison in Yellowstone National Park Early Wednesday morning, around 2 a.m., Logan City Police officers were dispatched to a reported domestic dispute. When they arrived, they found that it was more serious, and that it was an aggravated burglary and assault, according to documents. Guvench and Friedli allegedly knocked on the door, and when the victim answered, they forced their way into the house. One woman covered the victim's nose and mouth while the other 'struck the victim repeatedly in the face with closed fists.' The two dragged the victim outside and onto the lawn, where they continued to physically attack her. The victim's boyfriend heard screaming and came outside. He pulled the two women off the victim and recognized one as a family member and the other as his soon-to-be ex-wife. Guvench and Friedli then fled the scene before police arrived. Flag march in day, cricket match at night: In run-up to Rath Yatra, how communal harmony events are taking centrestage in Ahmedabad

Even as parts of the 16-km route of the upcoming Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra are seeing heightened vigilance with flag marches and intensive vehicle checking during the day, nightfall is witnessing games, sports and street plays in the walled city area – home to a mixed population of Hindu and Muslim residents. The communal harmony initiatives, entering their fourth edition this year, have become an annual feature ahead of the Rath Yatra. One such event was Ekta (unity) Cricket Cup, which saw the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) winning the inaugural match against the Ahmedabad City Police at the Bombay Housing Ground in Saraspur. While the 16-team cricket tournament, under the aegis of Zone-3 of the City Police, was being inaugurated by Commissioner of Police GS Malik with Mahant Dilipdas Maharaj of Jagannath Temple and Maulana Nurjamil Shaikh of Hussaini Masjid in attendance on Tuesday night, in another part of the old city, a 10-team volleyball tournament kicked off under the aegis of Zone-2 of the city police. On Wednesday night, as the cricket and volleyball tournaments were underway, Zone-3 DCP Vishakha Dabral, speaking to The Indian Express while waiting for a Nukkad Natak to begin on the Jagannath temple premises, said that a local artiste group was performing a play. 'Apart from the street plays, the cricket tournament will go on till June 14. On 15th, we have a blood donation camp at the temple, which will be attended by the Governor of Gujarat. We are also constantly holding shanti samiti (peace committee) meetings to make sure the yatra is a huge success,' she added. Meanwhile, Zone-2 DCP Bharatkumar Rathod, who is hosting the volleyball tournament, said, 'Our tournament was also inaugurated on Tuesday night. We have organised a shooting tournament as well as a passing tournament. A number of personnel of our police stations like Karanj and Madhavpura are also part of the teams participating at the tournament besides mixed teams of locals from various areas. Further, we have a religious harmony function with Gujarati film celebrities Yash Soni and Arjav Trivedi.' In the coming days, street plays and a musical night have been planned in Jamalpur and Teen Darwaza areas. DCP Rathod said the police will conduct a bike rally over the weekend, along with a blood donation drive at the Police Rifle Club. In addition, Zone-4 of the City Police will hold a tug-of-war competition. Inspector MD Chandravadiya of Shaherkotda police station, who has been organising the cricket tournament for the third consecutive year, said that 16 mixed teams are playing in the tournament with local religious and community leaders remaining present and locals participating in the sports. 'There are two teams from Saraspur, one each from Karanj and Khadiya, and others from Gomtipur, Amraiwadi and Rakhiyal. We also had the inaugural match between the City Police and ATS. The final will be played on June 14.' When asked about the purpose of these initiatives, PI Chandravadiya said, 'While the Rath Yatra itself is limited to the eastern part of the city, we want to tell the entire Ahmedabad that Hindus and Muslims celebrate this festival together and there are no bad feelings or conflict between the communities. This will only be further reinforced when the Rath Yatra is carried out without any problems or incident later this month.' On community participation during the Rath Yatra, in its 148th edition this year, the inspector said, 'Volunteers from Hindu and Muslim communities have been standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the areas the yatra is going to cover. The work on organising the yatra begins a month earlier, in May, and does not stop till the end of the yatra. We have no doubt that the Rath Yatra will be conducted without a glitch this year as well.' While Jagannath Temple Trustee Mahendra Jha could not be reached for comment, Maulana Shaikh told the Indian Express, 'The programmes being held before the Rath Yatra are beautiful. In these times of hatred, the message of love is very important. Like every year, the cricket tournament held by the Ahmedabad City Police is an example of maintaining communal harmony. Before being Hindus and Muslims, we are Hindustanis. Muslims will always stand up for our Hindu brethren. We congratulate the Ahmedabad City Police on its initiative.'

DK, Udupi admins take precautions ahead of Bakrid

Mangaluru/Udupi: Ahead of Bakrid, the district administrations and police in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi held official meetings to prevent illegal cattle transportation and slaughter in the districts. Deputy commissioners Anandh K of Dakshina Kannada and Vidya Kumari K of Udupi instructed police to form teams and set up checkposts to prevent illegal transportation of cattle. The DK DC directed the Mangaluru City police to form teams in the city and outskirts. People may contact 112 if they come across any illegal activities, the DC said, and directed the police department to ensure the secrecy of the informers. Officials informed that checkposts have been opened at all district and state borders in Dakshina Kannada. Meanwhile, meetings involving religious leaders are being conducted in each police station in the district. Directions have been given to police stations to warn individuals who are likely to create disturbances during the festival. Additional police force will be deputed to sensitive areas, officials said. The meeting resolved to invoke provisions under the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance 2020 to attach properties, if illegal cattle slaughter is reported, those who transport cattle illegally and slaughter them will be sentenced to 3–10 years of jail or a penalty to the tune of Rs 10 lakh under the law. City Police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and Dakshina Kannada SP Arun K were present. Udupi DC Vidya Kumari held a meeting and directed district and taluk-level committees to actively work to prevent the unauthorised slaughter and transportation of cattle. "Since there is a possibility of illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle, buffaloes, calves, and camels during the Bakrid festival, inspection teams comprising various officials have been formed across the district to prevent it. The appointed officials should coordinate with each other and actively work within their jurisdiction. The teams formed at the taluk level should meet, discuss control measures, and take action," she said, adding that the Bakrid festival should be conducted peacefully and harmoniously. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said that checkposts will operate 24 hours a day, throughout the district.
