Janaspandana to ensure transparent grievance redressal: Minister in charge of Mysuru

The Hindu04-07-2025
Minister in charge of Karnataka's Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa on Friday said that the State government is committed to resolving people's problems transparently and eliminating middlemen in grievance redressal.
Inaugurating the district-level Janaspandana and e-Pauti campaign at the Zilla Panchayat auditorium, Mr. Mahadevappa said that Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meetings are held every three months, while Janata Darshan programmes are organised every six months to address public grievances directly.
'Officials should provide details on how many petitions received in earlier Janaspandana programmes have been resolved. Applicants whose petitions face legal hurdles must also be informed. People should be made aware of transparent governance,' he directed officials.
On Friday, over 200 petitions were received, up from 113 in the previous programme.
The Minister said that the data has been compiled on the types of problems raised, departments concerned, petitions resolved, and actions pending. 'The administration will always stand with people to address their grievances,' he assured.
He added that direct interaction with the people not only resolves their issues, but also helps address administrative bottlenecks within government offices. 'To eliminate middlemen, Janaspandana programmes will be held every six months to ensure direct contact between citizens and the administration,' he informed.
Street vendors, differently-abled persons, and daily-wage workers submitted requests for housing facilities. Their petitions have been collected, and necessary steps have been assured to provide multi-housing facilities.
'Steps will be taken to ensure housing for everyone. Officials must identify economically backward people who are not receiving benefits and extend all necessary facilities to them,' Mr. Mahadevappa said.
MLC C.N. Manjegowda, State Guarantee Implementation Committee Chairman H.M. Revanna, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Zilla Panchayat CEO Yukesh Kumar, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, Superintendent of Police N. Vishnuvardhan, MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif, Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Shivaraju, and officials from various other departments were present.

Pakistan PM Sharif renews ‘dialogue' call, but India wary of peace rhetoric turning into betrayal

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif's call for 'meaningful dialogue' with India is met with scepticism in New Delhi, given a long history of peace talk offers followed by betrayal. India remains firm: no talks without concrete action against terrorism. read more Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said his country was ready for a 'meaningful dialogue' with India to resolve all outstanding issues. However, the statement follows a familiar and recurring pattern that has left India deeply sceptical. New Delhi views such peace overtures from Islamabad as part of a well-worn script, historically been followed by betrayal and hostile actions. Sharif made the remarks during a meeting with British High Commissioner Jane Marriott in Islamabad, where the two discussed regional affairs and bilateral ties. According to an official statement, Sharif 'expressed his appreciation for the UK's role in de-escalation of tensions during the Pakistan-India standoff' and reiterated that 'Pakistan was ready for a meaningful dialogue with India on all outstanding issues.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The comments come in the wake of Operation Sindoor, launched by India on May 7 to target terror and military infrastructure in Pakistan's territories following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. However, India's position remains firm: any dialogue must centre around Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and an end to cross-border terrorism. Indian officials have consistently warned against falling into the trap of rhetoric-driven diplomacy from Pakistan that lacks sincerity and follow-through. A pattern of peace talk offers followed by betrayal Pakistan's leadership has a long history of extending olive branches publicly while permitting or orchestrating actions that sabotage the very idea of peace. 1999 Kargil War: Just months after then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Lahore in a ground-breaking peace initiative with Nawaz Sharif, Pakistani troops and militants, under the guidance of General Pervez Musharraf infiltrated Indian territory in Kargil, triggering a bloody conflict that cost hundreds of lives. 2001 Agra Summit: After the Kargil betrayal, India cautiously resumed dialogue. But the summit collapsed and in December that year, terrorists from Pakistan attacked the Indian Parliament, a strike that nearly brought the two nations to the brink of war. 2008 Mumbai Attacks: Another major setback came after years of back-channel diplomacy and confidence-building measures. The 26/11 attacks, carried out by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives, left 166 people dead and shattered any remaining trust. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Post-Uri and Pulwama attacks: In more recent years, terror attacks in Uri (2016) and Pulwama (2019), again linked to Pakistan-based groups, were met with Indian military responses, surgical strikes and airstrikes in Balakot, respectively that further cementing India's view that engagement with Pakistan has repeatedly been undermined by acts of terror. India's cautious stance The Indian government has been saying unequivocally that talks cannot proceed under the shadow of terrorism. Without visible, verifiable action from Pakistan to dismantle terrorist networks operating from its soil, India remains unwilling to resume any substantive dialogue. In this context, Sharif's latest outreach is being viewed in New Delhi not as a genuine diplomatic move but as part of a familiar playbook, one where calls for peace serve as a smokescreen for strategic inaction or deception.

Trump: Japan deal reached with tariff rate set at 15%

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said he reached a trade deal with Japan that will set tariffs on Japanese imports at 15% and see the key American ally invest $550 billion into the US. "I just signed the largest trade deal in history - I think maybe the largest deal in history - with Japan," Trump said at an event at the White House on Tuesday after announcing the deal on social media. "And that was done with Japan. They had their top people here and we worked on it long and hard and it's a great deal for everybody." Trump has repeatedly zeroed in on auto trade as he criticizes trade imbalances with the country. Around 80% of Japan's trade surplus with the US is in cars and auto parts. Additional details of the preliminary agreement with Japan - including, critically, if Japanese automobiles and parts would receive a carve-out from separate 25% tariffs - were not immediately available. Japan's public broadcaster NHK said Washington would also lower the rate on the auto sector to 15%, citing an unidentified government official. Shares in Japanese carmakers jumped in Tokyo, with Toyota Motor Corp . rising more than 11%. Live Events "Japan and the US have been conducting close negotiations with our national interests on the line," Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said in Tokyo. "The two nations will continue to work together to create jobs and good products." Trump has previously announced trade frameworks without many specifics only for the White House to provide details days and weeks later, as terms are hammered out. Trump indicated at the event with Republican lawmakers at the White House that he also expects to sign a deal on a joint venture with Japan to export liquefied natural gas from Alaska. White House spokespeople did not immediately respond to requests for more information.

Four held by Gujarat ATS for allegedly promoting AQIS propaganda online

The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Gujarat police on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) said it had arrested four suspects from different parts of the country for allegedly promoting the ideology of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), a banned terrorist organisation, through social media platforms. Officials said the suspects were actively inciting youth towards jihad and violent anti-national activities online. According to ATS Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsh Upadhyay, the operation was initiated following intelligence inputs regarding five Instagram accounts allegedly disseminating inflammatory and anti-national content to radicalise youth and encourage terrorist activities and unrest in India. The suspects have been identified as Fardeen Shaikh from Fatehwadi (Ahmedabad), Saifulla Qureshi from Modasa (Gujarat), Mohammad Faik from Chandni Chowk (Delhi), and Zeeshan Ali from Noida (Uttar Pradesh). Acting on the intelligence, the ATS constituted four teams and conducted coordinated operations across Ahmedabad, Modasa, Delhi, and Noida on July 21 and 22. The operations were carried out with coordination central agencies, the Delhi Police Special Cell, and the Uttar Pradesh ATS. The investigation revealed that the group was allegedly propagating AQIS ideology under the banner of 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' and encouraging followers to take up arms. The suspects had reportedly circulated jihadist videos and literature via the social media accounts. During the search operations, the ATS recovered AQIS literature and a sword from the possession of Fardeen Shaikh. Officials said the sword was purportedly intended for use in anti-national jihad. A video recovered from Shaikh's phone allegedly showed him brandishing the weapon. Authorities further stated that mobile content from all four suspects' Instagram accounts contained material promoting jihad, 'Ghazwa-e-Hind', and incitement to violence against Indian democratic institutions. 'The aim of this propaganda was to undermine Indian democracy by urging the establishment of a Sharia-compliant or alternate Islamic governance through armed violence,' officials said. As part of the ongoing investigation, the ATS is auditing 25 sensitive and 62 related Instagram accounts. Cases have been registered against the accused under Sections 13, 18, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
