‘Palash' programme boosts tribal education in state
1 2 Ranchi: The Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), in collaboration with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (Unicef) and the Language Learning Foundation, is implementing the Palash programme across 1,041 schools in eight districts of the state. The initiative provides primary education for classes I to V in tribal languages and mother tongues in alignment with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The approach ensures that children receive instruction in a language they understand from the earliest stages of schooling, thereby strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Under the programme, 1,064 teachers, block resource persons (BRPs), and cluster resource persons (CRPs) were trained to deliver lessons in five tribal languages — Santhali, Mundari, Kurukh, Kharia, and Ho. Specially designed multilingual textbooks and workbooks were distributed to participating schools to make learning more accessible and culturally relevant. Currently, Palash is benefiting around 35,400 children in the districts of Simdega, Gumla, Khunti, Lohardaga, Latehar, Dumka, Sahibganj and West Singhbhum. Since its inception in 2022 with 259 schools across seven districts, the programme has expanded significantly, reaching more learners each year. JEPC state project director Shashi Ranjan said, "Plans are underway to include five more districts in the coming years and to increase the number of participating schools, thereby broadening the impact of mother-tongue-based education for the state's tribal communities." Unicef's education specialist, Parul Sharma, said, "Palash is not only improving academic outcomes but also fostering pride in children's linguistic and cultural identity.
