WCPO meteorologist leaving industry after 13 years to focus on ... whiskey? Here's why
A Channel 9 (WCPO-TV) meteorologist is saying goodbye to the station.
Brandon Spinner is leaving WCPO after more than three years, he shared via social media Friday, May 23. Spinner's last day is May 27.
Spinner added he is leaving the broadcast industry after nearly 13 years to focus on his digital brand, Whiskey Weather, which forecasts trends in the whiskey business, provides audiences with bourbon reviews and more. It has over 27,000 followers on Instagram and 10,000 on Facebook, as well as over 10,000 YouTube subscribers.
"While I won't rule out another stint as a broadcast meteorologist down the road, I'm excited to announce that I'm embarking on a new (well… old) adventure," Spinner wrote on social media. "Though it's hard to leave behind the familiarity of the green screen, I am excited for the next step. I hope you'll join me as I turn the page and step into this new role."
Spinner graduated from Valparaiso University in northwest Indiana with a bachelor's degree in meteorology and two minors in TV and radio broadcasting and mathematics, per his bio on the WCPO website.
Spinner started his career as a weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter at FOX 21 News (KQDS-TV) in Duluth, Minnesota, in May 2012. In 2013, he moved to the channel's sister station, KDLT-TV in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he worked as a morning meteorologist and chief meteorologist.
He later worked as a morning meteorologist at WAFF-TV in Huntsville, Alabama, for four and a half years before joining WCPO in April 2022.
"It's hard to put into words what this industry and business has meant to me. From the weather events I've covered, the coworkers I have worked alongside, and the viewers I have met, it has been an honor to have served the four markets I have been on-air in," Spinner wrote.
"Thank you for the support, the laughs, and the trust you have placed upon me to keep you safe the last 13 years," he added.

New video documents turbulent path to Cowboys star's $39 million payday
New video documents turbulent path to Cowboys star's $39 million payday The 2024 season proved to be mostly forgettable for America's Team, but now fans can go back and re-live it all through the eyes of CeeDee Lamb. The Cowboys wide receiver is the star of a new vlog which debuted on YouTube on Friday, racking up over 12,000 views in just its first couple hours online. Promising to take viewers behind the scenes of Lamb's 2024 offseason and the tumultuous 7-10 regular season that followed, the kickoff episode focused on Lamb's summer-long holdout and ended with his agreeing to a four-year, $135 million deal to keep him wearing the star. The deal included a $38 million signing bonus and $1 million initial base salary, but Lamb is quick to point out in the episode's exclusive interview clips that it wasn't easy playing hardball and skipping training camp for the first time ever. "Honestly, it was the worst," Lamb explained. "It was the worst ever. Do you hear me? Like, for those who know me, they know how serious I take this football stuff, you know what I'm saying? Like, with everything in me. I put pride, body, mind, soul, everything I got into winning and the result of it. And obviously, preparation that goes into it, you know? And for me to miss out on the right preparation with my team, my quarterback, my guys, just building those bonds off the field, whatever the case may be, you know what I'm saying? Like, I missed out on that." The 2020 first-round draft pick ended up sitting out the Cowboys' entire training camp in Oxnard, Calif. He rejoined his team just 12 days before the season opener in Cleveland and only after the Dallas front office made him the second-highest-paid non-QB in league history. But Friday's episode also documented some of the back and forth that went on, with negotiations between the two sides often playing out rather contentiously over the airwaves and social media. As told strictly from Lamb's point of view, the nine-minute video featured plenty of TV analysts arguing that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should just write the check to bring Lamb back into the fold. It also acknowledged the legions of Cowboys fans who were similarly voicing their support in the comments sections of online posts. At one point, the voice of former NFL Network host Peter Schrager can be heard referencing an early-August comment by Jones in which the billionaire said he didn't have "any urgency" in signing the then three-time Pro Bowler. "Yeah, that was a dagger," Lamb says glumly as he watches the report. But a deal was finally brought to fruition just days later, and the episode ends with Lamb celebrating his life-changing contract and preparing to fly out to meet his teammates in late August. What followed would prove to be a gut-wrenching rollercoaster of a season for both the Cowboys as a team and Lamb himself. But that will have to wait until subsequent episodes of the series.
