Dan Biggar questions Owen Farrell's Lions call-up: ‘It doesn't really make sense'
Farrell has been summoned to join the touring party in Australia after Saracens teammate Elliot Daly fractured his forearm against the Queensland Reds.

It is a bold call made by head coach Andy Farrell to call up his son to replace the versatile Daly, with the pair not like-for-like positionally. The Lions boss has hinted that Farrell's capacity to cover 12 is valuable to a squad short on inside centre options, though there appears to be ample cover at fly half with all of Finn Russell, Fin Smith and Marcus Smith already among the 37 players Down Under.
While the 33-year-old's competitive spirit and experience are undoubted, Farrell has not played for nine weeks and endured a difficult season at Racing 92 in the Top 14, with a number of injuries disrupting his campaign. He has not played at Test level since putting his England career on hold following the 2023 Rugby World Cup to prioritise his mental wellbeing.
Biggar toured with the Englishman on the 2017 and 2021 Lions trips and admits he was taken aback by the news.
'I have to say it seems like there's a lot of risk in this play and not a huge amount of reward," Biggar, who is working as a Sky Sports pundit in Australia during the tour, said.

"You've got Marcus and Fin Smith. Where do they feel like they sit in the pecking order now? When they close the bedroom door and go to bed and turn the lights off at night, what are they thinking?
"Are they thinking he is coming in to replace them? There's lots of options in those positions and it just feels like it doesn't really make sense and I think everybody is saying the same thing.
'I'm struggling to get to grips with the sense of it. No one's doubting that Owen is an amazing character, an amazing player in the career he's had. But he hasn't played Test rugby for over two years, hasn't played any form of rugby for the last couple of months and the person he's replacing [Daly], he doesn't play any of the same positions.'
Fin Smith will start for the Lions at fly half against the Waratahs on Saturday as the Lions continue their preparations for the three-Test series against the Wallabies. Farrell's call-up means that he is set to feature on a fourth tour, with the playmaker expected to be available to feature against the Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday if selected.

Hull FC home issues resurface with Giants loss

They would have leapfrogged Wakefield Trinity into the sixth and final spot, but were well beaten at MKM Stadium. They have now won only one of their eight home games this season - a record that is seriously harming their play-off prospects. Tries from Adam Swift, Joe Greenwood and Jake Bibby put the visitors in a commanding half-time lead. Scores after the break from George Flanagan and Tui Lolohea confirmed the win, despite a hat-trick for Hull winger Lewis Martin. The Giants remain 11th despite the victory, but they have won three of their past five away games. Huddersfield had been hammered by Wakefield last time out, but showed fine early defence to deny Harvey Barron and then Davy Litten from scoring tries in the corners. Then Swift capitalised on his side's first good field position to put them ahead. Martin's first try got Hull on the board, but two tries in three minutes allowed the Giants to take control. Greenwood touched down after a fine little kick from Matt Frawley, before Bibby took advantage of loose play between Aidan Sezer and Jordan Rapana to run in from inside his own half. Flanagan's try and goal extended the gap to 20 points early in the second period although Martin reduced that with his second try, but Lolohea powered over straight after to restore the cushion. Martin's final try was the pick of the game which allowed some fine footwork and handling involving him and Litten, but Hull's performance was a far cry from the one which had won at Wigan Warriors seven days ago. Hull FC head coach John Cartwright told BBC Radio Humberside: "We never really got into the game. It wasn't a game you wanted to be coming from behind and chasing points. "To their credit, they got in front, they got the jump on us and were good enough to stay in front. I thought Huddersfield played really well today. (On difference from last week at Wigan): "Very frustrating, very much so. Errors again were through the roof. "That's the story of the game. Too many errors and too many soft tries. A week off coming this week may be coming at the right time." Huddersfield Giants head coach Luke Robinson told BBC Radio Leeds: "It's never nice going into a break on the back of a loss so I'm really proud of the lads. "I thought we were on an upward trajectory the past four or five weeks and the Wakefield loss felt like a step backwards. "We had some honest conversations and if I didn't get a response, I would have felt like something was wrong. "Thankfully for me, the club, everyone involved, the lads responded really, really well." England ready to meet challenge of 'fantastic' Spain in Euro 2025 final
England captain Leah Williamson admits that Spain are "the best at what they do" but is confident her side can compete with the reigning world champions in Sunday's Euro 2025 final. "Tomorrow we play a game against the world champions who continue to prove themselves over and over in the way that they play football," Williamson told reporters at Basel's St Jakob-Park on the eve of the game. "They are a fantastic footballing team, they are the best at what they do, and we are very much aware of that but we think we are pretty good in some areas as well. "We need to be at our best to beat Spain but I think they will need to be at their best to beat us too. "I think there is a lot of respect between the two teams, and I'd be hesitant to say we are underdogs in this scenario." England are hoping to retain the European Championship title they won on home soil in 2022, but the match is also a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, in which Spain triumphed 1-0 in Sydney. There is a growing rivalry between the nations, with England winning in extra time when they clashed in the quarter-finals at Euro 2022. The sides have also already faced each other twice this year in the UEFA Nations League, with England winning 1-0 at Wembley in February. Spain avenged that result by claiming a 2-1 victory in Barcelona at the beginning of last month, when Claudia Pina scored twice after Alessia Russo had given England the lead. "We have played each other a lot over the last couple of years and I think you always have learnings from the games we have played," said England coach Sarina Wiegman.
