‘It was written in the stars': NI cheers for Lioness match winner Chloe Kelly who has Tyrone roots
After scoring the winning goal in the 2022 final, Kelly netted the decisive spot kick in Sunday's shoot-out success against Spain. The 27-year-old's grandfather was from the Omagh area. Indeed, when he was Northern Ireland women's manager, Kenny Shiels made a cheeky attempt to persuade the 27-year-old to change her allegiance to the green and white army — to no avail. Colin Nugent, one of her Tyrone relations, believes the latest triumph was 'written in the stars' after a tournament which saw England make astonishing comebacks in both their quarter-final and semi-final. Originally from Omagh, Colin now lives in Belfast. His father, Sean, is the cousin of Brendan Kelly, Chloe's grandfather, who moved to London from Omagh. Though he never met Kelly himself, Colin and his family would be frequently visited by Brendan when he came over from England. 'She is a distant cousin of mine. Her father and my grandfather are cousins,' he said. 'Her grandfather was Brendan Kelly from Omagh, while Sean Nugent was from Omagh as well. He lived in London and Brendan and my father were quite close. 'I don't know Chloe very well, it's her grandfather I knew and his brothers. But, it's nice to know there is a connection. 'They used to visit Omagh regularly when I lived here. I did know her grandfather. 'I watched the match, I saw a lot of the Lionesses' matches, because I am related to Chloe. It seems to have been written in the stars — she had been playing very well in the last few games.' England fans erupted with joy as the team defended their Euros title in Sunday's final in Basel, Switzerland. After the game finished 1-1, Kelly scored the winning spot kick in the shoot-out following two huge saves from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Kelly, who plays her club football for Arsenal, also scored the winning goal in the 2022 final against Germany at Wembley. The team landed back in the UK on Monday before heading to a reception at Downing Street hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock. Earlier, captain Leah Williamson was seen smiling and holding the Euros trophy as the team left their hotel in Zurich. The King said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration', adding: 'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can'. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed their triumph, saying: 'The Lionesses have once again captured the hearts of the nation.' News Catch Up - Monday 28th July Colin, meanwhile, revealed his family's football links run deep, with his brother winning the Northern Ireland Junior Cup in the 2010s twice in a row. 'My brothers and I have always played football on an amateur level. My daughter, Sophie, was a keen footballer at a youth level. She played a lot of it and was quite good,' he revealed. 'She's at university now though and has had to stop. We are all interested in football, it has always been in the family. 'There is a sense of pride in the family that Chloe is doing so well in the England team, since we have always been a connection with the sport. 'Of course, whether I met her or not, she is still family, and it's great to see her do well.' Two years ago, Kenny Shiels, who managed the Northern Ireland women's team from 2019 to 2023, revealed he once tried to recruit Kelly. 'I was never speaking to her directly, I made the enquiries a few years ago through the proper channels [about getting her for NI], but she didn't have the desire to play,' Shiels said, stating that he had heard about Kelly's Ulster links through his own contacts. He noted that at that stage, Kelly wasn't often a first choice for the England team, but that Northern Ireland still seemed to be her third option, as she was also eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, with her other grandfather hailing from Dublin.

Celtic are repeating 10 In A Row transfer mistakes as Rangers urged to appoint Sir Alex Ferguson
Anthony Evans took your calls as Brendan Rodgers was asked to make his mind up over transfers Celtic have been accused of 'sitting on their hands' in the transfer market this summer, with one Hotline punter fearing a repeat of a scenario five years ago. The Hoops went into the start of the 2020/21 season looking for a 10th successive Premiership title, only for Steven Gerrard's Rangers to deny them the historic feet, with manager Neil Lennon leaving the club with three months of the campaign still to go. Fans are clamouring for big money signings before their crunch Champions League play-off at the end of August, having seen 49ers Enterprises splash the cash across the city at Rangers. And Charles Buchanan is growing increasingly worried about his team's chances of retaining their crown once again. He emailed to say: " Celtic sat on their hands and let Rangers stop ten in a row. Now they are doing it again by not getting cover in central defence and at full back. If anything happens to Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kieran Tierney and Alistair Johnson, we will struggle against any decent teams get." However, two other callers of a Parkhead persuasion remain relaxed on the situation. Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: " I believe the reaction to Celtic so far not bringing in a Hollywood type signing from fellow Celtic fans on the Hotline is over the top. "Our league is hard to attract the quality Rodgers craves because of a lack of competition on the domestic front and having three artificial surfaces doesn't help either Celtic would splash the cash but unfortunately the English premiership is where the best players want to test themselves." Robert McEwan, Mt Vernon, added: "Celtic's lack of (signing) a couple of up and ready type players are out there, so hopefully we get them in. But we fans are not panicking yet. The fact is we have lost quality, but win on Sunday, and we can do what we expect to do as usual by winning the title." David Oliver, Hawick, has an alternative view on the lack of serious investment from the champions so far this summer. He wrote: "In reply to Joe MacEachen wondering why Celtic haven't opened the purse strings yet, I reckon (Peter) Lawwell and (Dermot) Desmond know Brendan (Rodgers) won't be here after this season and they're keeping the money to entice a new manager when he leaves. Not to say they won't have new signings still incoming, stranger things have happened though. Big risk though if don't get into the Champions League." Donald Dundas, Uddingston, added: "It was amusing to hear The Bold Brendan congratulate himself on all the signings being his after results against Sporting and a couldn't be bothered Newcastle "However the rapid contradiction after the Ajax destruction shouting from the heavens: 'We need signings" and 'we need to spend on quality'. Make your mind up Brendan. "Although to be fair, the board as usual are hoping Rangers won't improve which could come back to bite (them)." Sir Alex Ferguson recently visited Russell Martin and his squad at Auchenhowie ahead of their Champions League second round qualifying first leg victory over Panathinaikos last week and one punter is now calling on the Ibrox giants to offer the legendary manager a position on the board. Stephen Johnstone Ardentinny, wrote: "Sir Alex Ferguson is best ever manager in my mind in world club football. The former player at Ibrox has a base now in the west end and is visiting Rangers' facility as well as attending their games. "Are the 49ers going to appoint Fergie with a non-directorship to the board and pick his brains of the vast knowledge of the football world? He can be the one to make them rise from the ashes and be like Sir Alex's all-shining knights to end Celtic dominance."

Lionel Messi attacked in savage blast after no-show - 'You need to grow up'
Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba missed the MLS's All-Star match against Mexican opposition and both received a one-game ban as a result but should not feel hard done by Lionel Messi has been told to 'grow up' after missing the MLS All-Star match. The Inter Miami star, alongside Jordi Alba, did not feature in the game and as a result suffered a one-match ban. Former Barcelona team-mates Messi and Alba were forced to sit out of their team's match with FC Cincinnati as punishment for missing the showpiece event where a team of MLS All-Stars took on their Liga MX counterparts. Ex-US international and LA Galaxy president Alexi Lalas has launched a fiery response to any defence of Messi and the criticism over his punishment. Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano claimed his superstar was fatigued but MLS rules state than anyone skipping the All-Star game without an injury must face a suspension. And Lalas has been left incredulous of the support Messi has received following the decision to miss the game. The 55-year-old believes Messi missed his opportunity to get out of the game when negotiating his deal with the league. 'Fascinating in the way that it has been handled and the reaction to it,' Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. "We all have either been involved or grown up watching All-Star games and the phenomenon of All-Star Game when it comes to multiple sports here. It's very normal for us… But I will say that the framing that is happening right now of Messi as some saint, waging some righteous fight against the perceived evils and ills of MLS and its structure, or even the very concept of an MLS All-Star game. "That's a little rich, and that's a little ridiculous. He signed his contract. He knew that playing in the All-Star game was part of his contract. So he knew the rules. So Messi, you need to grow up. You need to participate. "And if you didn't want to play in the All-Star game, you had the leverage at the moment you were signing your contract, and you should have negotiated for that." Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas had earlier made a staunch defence of his players and suggested it was the club who took the decision for Messi and Alba not to feature in the All-Star game. The team told the MLS in the days leading to the game that their stars would not play after a schedule of nine matches in 36 days. " Lionel Messi is very upset, like we all are in the club, with the fact that they won't be able to play tomorrow night. But I think what we have to do as a club is to get together as one, have an attitude that is us against the world," Mas said. "I think that the punishment for the rule is frankly draconian," Mas added. "Obviously, it was not a positive reaction [from Messi and Alba]. They want to compete, they want to play games. That's what they're here for, to play and win. They understand the magnitude of tomorrow's night's game. "So no, their reaction was exactly as expected of two competitive players who don't understand the decision, who don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension."
