Can Nissan's new Leaf rekindle its electric mojo?
It is difficult to understate the Leaf's symbolic importance to Nissan.
It was the world's best-selling EV for years until it was overtaken by Tesla. Introduced by the now-disgraced Carlos Ghosn, it heralded Nissan's desire to play a big role in the electric future. Despite the company's troubles in recent years, it has sold almost 700,000 Leaf vehicles.
CEO Ivan Espinosa faces the difficult task of delivering much-needed cost cuts while continuing to invest in development of new vehicles to refresh its ageing line-up and lack of hybrids in the US.
Espinosa has laid out plans for big cuts, including seven plant closures and 11,000 jobs. That will bring staff cuts to about 20,000, including those announced by his predecessor last year.
Nissan reported a net loss of about $4.5bn (R80,705,024,550) in the past financial year and faces ¥596bn (R73,552,350,570) in debt due next year.
The new Leaf will also be made at the Sunderland factory in Britain. The Tochigi and Sunderland plants are not expected to be among the closures, though the Oppama factory where the Leaf was first made could be axed.

Sales of new Tesla cars in Sweden, Denmark and France fell in July for the seventh straight month as the EV maker struggles with a backlash to CEO Elon Musk's political views, regulatory challenges and competition from European and Chinese brands. Tesla's aging lineup is facing a wave of low cost EV rivals, specially from China. It is rolling out a revamped Model Y and starting to produce a new, cheaper model, but production of that will only ramp up next quarter, later than initially expected. The brand's sales were down 86% year-on-year in July to 163 cars in Sweden, 52% to 336 cars in Denmark and 27% to 1,307 cars in France, official industry data showed, after dropping by more than a third in Europe in the first six months of the year. With no more affordable end vehicles on the horizon until the last three months of the year and the upcoming end of a $7,500 (R136,940) US tax break for EV buyers, Musk acknowledged in July that Tesla could have "a few rough quarters". He said tough automated driving regulations in Europe made it harder to sell the Model Y in some countries as the vehicle's optional supervised self-driving is "a huge selling point". "Our sales in Europe we think will improve significantly once we are able to give customers the same experience they have in the UD" he told analysts. Model Y registrations in Sweden and Denmark fell by 88% and 49% respectively in July. In June Tesla launched a trial robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, using about a dozen Model Y SUVs controlled by its autonomous-driving software. However, the roll-out of its self-driving features elsewhere in the US is bogged down because it hasn't received the required permits. Overall car sales slid 8% in France and were up 20% in Denmark and 6% in Sweden in July, the industry data showed. Other European countries, including Italy, Norway and Spain, are expected to release July car sales data later on Friday.

This is a significant improvement from its original two-star rating. It received a perfect rating in adult safety and a three-star rating in child safety, accumulating an overall five-star safety rating for the passengers. Protocol Global NCAP's crash test protocols assess frontal and side impact protection for all models, as well as Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Pedestrian protection and side pole impact protection assessments are required for vehicles scoring the highest star ratings. 'It's welcome to see Nissan's focus on improving the Magnite's safety performance. The five-star rating is relevant to consumers in South Africa and India, and it demonstrates what can be achieved in a relatively short period of time when a manufacturer is fully committed to engaging in the NCAP process," said Richard Woods, chief executive officer, Global NCAP. South Africa's deadly arrogance India managed their 2024 elections using 1.5 million electronic voting machines and AI systems connecting with voters in multiple languages - we still count paper ballots by hand and argue about results for weeks. India's Operation Sindoor demonstrated AI-powered military precision with integrated command systems detecting hostile objects with millimetre accuracy - meanwhile, our defence force deteriorates so badly that tiny Lesotho now claims territorial rights to Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. While global focus remains on domestic political narratives that emphasise external challenges and historical grievances, the real threat to our future prosperity emerges from technological obsolescence. We could deploy AI to monitor CCTV networks, patrol our coastlines, secure government infrastructure, detect municipal service failures, and prevent water system disasters before they occur. Yet institutional resistance persists, rooted in a mindset that assumes South African exceptionalism and external obligation rather than embracing global collaboration. This technological isolationism doesn't merely delay progress - it systematically weakens our strategic position relative to neighbouring states that once regarded our capabilities with considerable respect. The BRICS advantage: why geography Is destiny Here's South Africa's criminally underused weapon: our BRICS partnership with India and China. While Western countries impose sanctions and barriers, our alliance members eagerly share technology and expertise. India's UPI processes more payments than America and Europe combined - they'll help us build similar infrastructure. China's AI manages continental railways and drone deliveries - they're already investing in African infrastructure. Why beg Silicon Valley for scraps when BRICS partners offer full collaboration? Our Indian community bridges languages and cultures, accelerating this partnership while Britain struggles to attract Indian talent. Three scenarios: champion, survivor, or casualty We can rapidly leverage BRICS partnerships adapting Eastern AI for African contexts, making South African cities testbeds for global expansion. Or we slowly adopt foreign systems, paying premium prices while remaining dependent. Worst case: we debate endlessly while becoming economically irrelevant as our brightest minds emigrate. The question that defines our future The Western AI hype bubble is bursting. The real revolution happens in Mumbai and Shanghai, not San Francisco and London. The future belongs to countries building AI for real people solving real problems. South Africa stands at a crossroads. We can embrace our BRICS partners AI revolution, adapt it for African realities, and become relevant players in a multipolar digital world. Or we can keep debating while the future passes us choice isn't whether we'll lead - that option expired years ago. The choice is whether we'll remain relevant participants in humanity's next chapter or become footnotes in someone else's success story. The world is watching. India is building. China is scaling.
