Premier League CEO Masters warns racist abuse will result in banning, possible prosecution
His comments came a day after Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo was the target of racist abuse during his side's 4-2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
'No Premier League footballer should ever have to, in their workplace or online, suffer that sort of abuse. It is important that we keep saying that,' Masters told BBC Sport.
'It is a problem for society. It leaks into football and it shouldn't happen in a football stadium. It shouldn't happen online. It makes people like me and other football people in charge of the game think twice about what else we can do to ensure that these things don't happen in the future. If you are found to be using discriminatory language inside a football ground you will be ejected, second you will be banned and third you may face criminal charges,' he added.
Friday's game was briefly halted in the 29th minute to address the incident, with referee Anthony Taylor summoning both managers to the touchline for a briefing.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Bournemouth counterpart Adam Smith were then called over to the benches for further instructions before play resumed four minutes later.
Ghana international Semenyo went on to score twice after play resumed.
Merseyside Police confirmed that the 47-year-old man from Liverpool who was ejected after the incident had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and taken into custody to be interviewed.
Semenyo thanked his teammates, Liverpool, match officials and the 'entire football family' for their support in a statement on Saturday.
'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever -- not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,' Semenyo wrote on Instagram.
The incident at Anfield followed reports of Tottenham Hotspur's French forward Mathys Tel being subjected to racist abuse on social media after missing a penalty in his side's UEFA Super Cup defeat by Paris St Germain on Wednesday.

PL: Gyokeres, Mbuemo, Cunha handed starts, Onana misses out as Arsenal face Man Utd
Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi make their Premier League debuts as Arsenal take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Reds are without Andre Onana, who missed the entire pre-season campaign due to injury. In his place Altay Bayindir is in goal, against the club he produced a Man of the Match performance against in last term's FA Cup third-round success at the Emirates Stadium. Fans will have to wait to see Benjamin Sesko's debut, as he is on the bench, but both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha start. Mason Mount is rewarded for an impressive display in the Snapdragon Cup against Fiorentina with a place as one of the two no.10s, Matthijs de Ligt edges Harry Maguire out of the middle of defence and Diogo Dalot is preferred to Amad in the right wing-back slot. Joshua Zirkzee is fit enough to be among the substitutes, following his lay-off, but there is no Rasmus Hojlund in the matchday squad. For Arsenal, the Swedish No. 14 starts up front, while Spaniard Zubimendi is in the midfield alongside Declan Rice and skipper Martin Odegaard. The duo become the 915th and 916th players to represent Arsenal men's first team, while three other new arrivals are all on the bench. David Raya starts in goal behind a back four of Ben White, William Saliba, Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are on either side of Gyokeres. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera and Noni Madueke are also potential debutants on the bench, while Christian Norgaard is not in the squad. Squad: Man United: Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Dalot, Casemiro, Fernandes (c), Dorgu; Mbeumo, Mount; Cunha. Substitutes: Heaton, Fredricson, Heaven, Maguire, Mainoo, Ugarte, Amad, Sesko, Zirkzee. Arsenal: Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori, Zubimendi, Rice, Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli, Gyokeres. Substitutes: Arrizabalaga, Timber, Lewis-Skelly, Mosquera, Merino, Nwaneri, Trossard, Madueke, Havertz.

Tagedy In Premier League: Fan Dies In Stands As Match Goes On In Brighton
Last Updated: A 72-year-old man died during Brighton & Hove Albion's match against Fulham at Amex Stadium. Despite CPR and defibrillation, he couldn't be saved. The club offered condolences. Tragedy struck Brighton & Hove Albion FC's Amex Stadium on Saturday as a 72-year-old man passed away during their Premier League match against Fulham. The club said that authorities — South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics, St John Ambulance, Sussex Police, the club's crowd doctor and stewards — gave the fan prolonged CPR and defibrillation under privacy screens after he took unwell in the second half. They decided against taking the fan to the hospital because they felt it gave him the highest chance of survival. 'This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon, and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life," Club chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said in a statement. 'While the gentleman concerned is foremost in our minds, we are also aware that it was an emotional and distressing situation for staff and supporters in the direct vicinity. Over the coming days we will ensure those affected are properly supported." Club doctor and emergency medicine consultant Dr Rob Galloway also gave a statement: 'Firstly, I would like to convey my condolences and sympathies to the gentleman's family and friends. It was a tragic outcome, but from an emergency response perspective, the medical care was exemplary, and the professionalism of club stewards and Sussex Police provided the medical team with the best possible working environment." The club and Premier League stakeholders also considered getting the match stopped but decided against that, too. The club explained the decision, saying: '… as the majority of supporters and both sets of players were unaware at the time, the decision was taken not to do this. It was felt any stoppage would have brought further attention to the scene and potentially impacted the resuscitation attempts, as well as creating possible further complications had the patient responded and required rapid transportation to hospital." The club has offered support to the family of the fan. Anxieties are already on a high the league after the tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident before the season. view comments First Published: August 17, 2025, 20:42 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
