Bezos' Venice wedding party moved following protests – DW – 06/25/2025
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's Venice wedding party was moved out of the city center due to security reasons. Many have protested because they say the lavish plans are yet another sign of exploitation of the city.
Billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has changed the venue of the party celebrating his wedding with former TV presenter Lauren Sanchez, following protests against the event scheduled for the weekend in Italy's Venice.
The wedding party, which was to be held on Saturday in a popular and central nightlife area, in Cannaregio's Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Misericordia, was moved to an isolated, less accessible part of the lagoon city for security reasons.
The highly anticipated event, dubbed "the wedding of the century," is set to draw a bevy of celebrities, including US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, both of whom have already arrived in Venice.
The wedding party, which will include some 250 guests, will now be held in the Arsenale, an exhibition space for the Venice Biennale art fair. The venue, which lies further from the center, was originally a shipyard serving the Venetian Republic's maritime empire during its heyday in the 15th century.
The venue is considered safer than the medieval former religious school where the party was initially scheduled to be held. It is surrounded by water, making it impossible to reach by land when bridges are raised.
Protesters including residents and pressure groups have rallied against the wedding ceremony for weeks, arguing that the event will transform the city into a private amusement park for the rich.
Protesters ask city authorities to prioritize local needs over tourism, with more protests scheduled on Saturday on Venice's canals, bridges and narrow streets in an effort to turn the event into a "nightmare" for the Amazon founder and his guests.
"The news that Bezos has run away from the Misericordia is a great victory for us," Reuters quoted Tommaso Cacciari, a leader of the "No Space for Bezos" campaign, as saying.
The exact date and location of the wedding have so far been kept a secret for security reasons.
The wedding and the parties held on its sidelines are expected to cost €40-€48 ($46.5 - $55.6 million), according to Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto region that comprises the city.
Bezos, in parallel, will make sizable charity donations, including €1 million for Corila, an academic consortium that studies Venice's lagoon ecosystem, according to Italian media reports.
Zaia defended the wedding and criticized the protesters, saying that it would bring revenue of up to €48 million to local businesses, via the 90 private jets that will carry guests to nearby airports.

US, Iran mull restarting nuclear talks: Trump envoy – DW – 06/25/2025
US special envoy Steve Witkoff said early discussions between the two countries appear "hopeful." A preliminary report found US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites set back the country's nuclear program by only a few months.A preliminary US intelligence assessment reportedly found that Iran's nuclear program has only been set back by a few months following US strikes on Iran's key nuclear facilities, according to Reuters. According to the assessment, Tehran would be able to restart its nuclear program in months, Reuters said, citing three unnamed sources familiar with the matter. The assessment are at odds with US President Donald Trump's assertions that the US strikes "fully obliterated" Iran's nuclear program. The damage assessment was first reported by CNN, which asked the White House for comment, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying the "alleged" assessment was "flat-out wrong." "Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000 pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration," she was quoted as saying. Trump has denied the news on his Truth Social platform. In a post written in capital letters, he described CNN as "fake news," writing the reporting aimed to "demean one of the most successful military strikes in history." He maintained that Iran's nuclear sites are now "completely destroyed." The America strikes on Iranian nuclear sites used conventional weapons as well as bunker-busting bombs, believed to be the only bombs capable of destroying Iran's underground Fordo nuclear site. The extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear facilities and sites remains unclear. The US and Iran are in early discussions about resuming negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, US special envoy Steve Witkoff told Fox news. "The conversations are promising. We're hopeful," Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News. "Now it's time to sit down with the Iranians and get to a comprehensive peace deal." Witkoff said US and Iran are engaged in both direct talks and through intermediaries about getting back to the table after Israeli and US strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities. A new round of nuclear talks between the US and Iran was slated for June 15, but Israel struck Iran two days earlier, triggering a war that saw the US strike three nuclear facilities in Iran, before Trump announced a surprise ceasefire on Monday. On Tuesday, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said Washington and Tehran were in early discussions over resuming nuclear talks which were derailed by the Israeli strikes on Iran and the consequent war. Meanwhile, an early intelligence assessment reportedly found that Iran's nuclear program was only set back by a few months, following American strikes on three Iranian facilities. The findings, which are ongoing, are at odds with Trump's assertions that Iran's nuclear program was "fully obliterated."
