Hoe Yean clocks season's best at World Championships

New Straits Times12 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean bounced back strong after battling jet lag on the opening day but injuries hampered other senior Malaysian athletes at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore today (July 28).
Hoe Yean clocked a season's best one minute and 48.10 seconds to place 31st overall from 59 swimmers in the men's 200 metre freestyle preliminaries, bettering the 1:48.68s he clocked at the World University Games in Berlin earlier this month.
The time, however, was not enough to see him make the top-16 cut for the semi-finals at the OCBC Aquatics Centre.
Welson Sim's 1:47.36s from 2017 remains the Malaysian national record in the event.
A travel-fatigued Hoe Yean, who arrived in Singapore from Berlin late on Saturday, placed 28th in the 400m freestyle preliminaries yesterday on 3:51.11s which was some way off the 3:47.38s (national record) he clocked en route to silver at WUG.
Phee Jinq En opted to sit out the women's 100m breaststroke event today due to a hip issue. She is scheduled to compete in the 50m breaststroke on Sunday (Aug 2).
Malaysia Aquatics secretary-general Andy Low said: "She has a slight injury but is preparing for her favourite 50m (breastrstroke) event later this week," said Andy when contacted today.
In diving, Nurqayyum Nazim-Yong Rui Jie settled for 21st from 26 pairs in the men's 3m springboard synchronised preliminaries.
The duo's routines scored 44.40, 42.00, 57.60, 66.96, 56.10 and 35.70 for a 302.76 total. Only the top-eight pairs made the cut for the final.
Luck was not on Pandelela Rinong-Lee Yiat Qing's side in the women's 10m platform synchronised as they were forced to withdraw after scoring 43.80 and 43.20 in the first two dives due to an injury sustained by Pandelela.
It is understood that Pandelela had tweaked her shoulder and withdrew as a precautionary measure. The 32-year-old is scheduled to compete in the 10m platform individual event on Wednesday.
Pandelela, Yiat Qing, Elvis Clement and Enrique Harold had competed in the mixed 3m and 10m team event on Saturday, finishing 16th from 21 teams.
Hoe Yean will next compete in the men's 800m freestyle while Andrew Goh will see action in the men's 50m breaststroke tomorrow.
Elvis-Enrique will take to the pool for the men's 10m platform synchronised event tomorrow.

Wushu exponent Yong Xin wins Asian junior title, aims for Youth Olympics debut

Malaysian wushu exponent Kwan Yong Xin PETALING JAYA: Kwan Yong Xin is staking a strong claim to get onto the Youth Olympics stage after pulling off the biggest win of her young career. The 17-year-old delivered a pleasant surprise by winning gold for Malaysia in the Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Jiangyin, China, yesterday. Yong Xin danced her way to the gold with 9.426 points in the girls' 16-18 taijijian (taiji sword) event. Singapore and Vietnam took silver (9.333) and bronze (9.316) respectively. Yong Xin had narrowly missed gold in the taijiquan event the day before, scoring 9.356 to settle for silver behind China's winner (9.420). Although Yong Xin was only a silver medallist for the Federal Territories behind national exponent Mandy Cebelle Chen of Selangor at the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) last year, she is now a champion on the Asian junior stage. She was delighted to achieve this milestone ahead of wushu's highly anticipated debut as a medal sport at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. Malaysia enjoyed a medal rush in the last two days with five more silvers from Lee Ronn in boys' 14-15 changquan (9.270), Lee Cheng Wei in girls' 16-18 changquan (9.426), Ong Wei Bin in boys' 16-18 changquan (9.433), Bryan Wee in boys' 13 and under daoshu (9.073) and Logan Lim in boys 13 and under nangun (9.036).

Pandelela pulls out with shoulder pain at Singapore Worlds

SINGAPORE: A recurring shoulder injury proved costly for Pandelela Rinong, forcing her and partner Lee Yiat Qing to withdraw halfway through their women's 10m platform synchro routine at the World Aquatics Championships on Monday. The Malaysian pair completed just two of five dives, scoring 87 points, before pulling out during the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Pandelela revealed that the injury, sustained earlier this month, flared up during the warm-up session. "After two dives, we decided to withdraw for safety reasons," she wrote on Facebook. "Thank you, especially to those who came to the venue to support us." It was a double setback for Malaysia, as Nurqayyum Nazmi Nazim-Yong Rui Jie also failed to progress in the men's 3m springboard synchro. The pair finished 21st out of 26 pairs, with a total of 302.76 points, well outside the top-eight cut-off required for the final. - Bernama

Pandelela Rinong withdraws from world championships due to shoulder injury

A shoulder injury forced national diving star Datuk Pandelela Rinong and her partner Lee Yiat Qing to withdraw from the women's 10m synchronised event at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. The pair completed two of their five scheduled dives, scoring 87 points before pulling out during the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Pandelela revealed the injury, sustained earlier this month, flared up during warm-ups. 'After two dives, we decided to withdraw for safety reasons. I want to thank everyone, especially those who came to support us,' she posted on Facebook. Earlier, Malaysian divers Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohamad Nazim and Yong Rui Jie missed the finals in the men's 3m synchronised springboard, finishing 21st out of 26 teams with 302.76 points. In swimming, Khiew Hoe Yean failed to progress in the men's 200m freestyle, placing 31st overall with a time of 1:48.10. SEA Games champion Phee Jinq En also withdrew from the women's 100m breaststroke due to a hip and groin issue. National swimming head coach Eric Anderson explained that Jinq En opted out to focus on the 50m breaststroke event on August 2. 'The team flew here straight from the World University Games in Berlin, which is hardly ideal,' he said. - Bernama
