EC to opposition: Get 'wrongfully excluded' to file claims
NEW DELHI: Brushing aside the allegation by opposition MPs Asaduddin Owaisi and Randeep Surjewala that the special intensive revision of electoral roll in Bihar is an exercise in disenfranchising minorities and precarious communities, the Election Commission on Wednesday asked them to get all such electors to file their claims and objections before Sept 1. "Mr Owaisi and Mr Surjewala should ensure that their state units and booth level agents (BLAs) facilitate those they complain have been wrongfully excluded to file their claims with the ERO to add them back in the electoral roll. Interestingly, even as the national party leaders have been complaining of alleged irregularities and imperfections in the roll, not a single claim or objection was filed by any of the 1.6 lakh party BLAs in the field, between publication of the roll on Aug 1 and 9 am on Wednesday," said an EC official. On the other hand, 3,659 individual electors directly filed their claims and objections during this period. Another 19,186 newly-eligible electors have also filed pleas for fresh enrolment through Form 6, along with the mandatory declaration. EC on Wednesday said it is revising the Bihar roll as per the Constitution and the extant laws, and with full transparency. EC said lists of electors reported by BLOs as dead, permanently shifted, having two votes and who could not be contacted after at least three visits of BLOs were shared with all political parties and their BLAs on or before July 20, giving them ample time to report any wrongful additions or deletions.

‘Contempt rule can't take away CJ's powers'
Kolkata: Senior counsel Parthasarathi Sengupta, while making his arguments in response to senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee's plea in a recent contempt case before the Calcutta High Court Thursday, submitted that the chief justice of a high court enjoys certain general powers under the Constitution that a rule of the Contempt of Courts Act couldn't take away. Sengupta was arguing over the maintainability of the contempt rule issued by a division bench of justices Arijit Banerjee, Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya and Rajarshi Bharadwaj against TMC's Kunal Ghosh and seven others in connection with the ruckus where a mob stamped on a photo of a high court judge. He submitted that the chief justice didn't issue the contempt rule. Sengupta submitted that the division bench, after seeking affidavits, issued the contempt rule on its own motion. He argued that the advocate general's taking cognisance of the complaint was not mandatory for the high court to take cognisance of the complaint. The bench will hear the matter again on Aug 14. BCD warns advocates against online, YouTube solicitation
New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) The Bar Council of Delhi has issued a stern notice cautioning advocates against advertising or soliciting legal work through social media platforms. The regulatory body has flagged the increasing trend of lawyers and self-proclaimed 'legal influencers' posting promotional videos, client interactions, and other content online, which it deemed unethical and in violation of Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules. While issuing a notice, BCD Chairman Surya Prakash Khatri emphasised the seriousness of the matter and stated that such conduct undermines the dignity and sanctity of the legal profession and poses a risk of spreading misinformation, particularly when done by individuals who lack proper legal qualifications or licensing. The Council's notice directs all advocates currently engaged in such activities to take down their content with immediate effect. Failure to comply, it warned, could invite disciplinary action under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, including suspension or cancellation of their license to practice law. The Bar Council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the ethical standards of the legal profession and cautioned members of the Bar to refrain from indulging in direct or indirect forms of advertisement or self-promotion that could erode public trust in the legal system.
