Eutelsat strikes global satellite internet deal with UK government

Time of India22-07-2025
Paris:
Eutelsat
said Monday that it had signed a deal to provide
broadband connectivity
for British embassies and other government operations worldwide, after London invested in the French satellite operator.
France has also upped its investment as European governments seek a homegrown alternative to Starlink satellites operated by dominant US-based player SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk.
"Eutelsat OneWeb's LEO (low Earth orbit) constellation will provide high-speed, low latency connectivity for British Embassies, High Commissions, and Consulates as well as broader
UK government
activities globally," the company said in a statement.
Beyond diplomacy, Eutelsat's technology would support "policing, resilience, defence and other essential operations", it added.
British firm NSSLGlobal will manage the satellite provision for the UK's foreign ministry (FCDO), which can be extended to other government departments, Eutelsat said.
Eutelsat is already providing service to the FCDO under a deal set to last "several years", a spokeswoman told AFP.
Britain earlier this month said it would pump 163 million euros ($192 million) into Eutelsat.
Under a capital increase announced in June, the French state will hold 29 percent of Eutelsat by the end of 2025, up from 13 percent previously, with London's share steady at 10.9 percent following its increased investment.
European capitals' concerns about "technological sovereignty" have extended to space, fanned notably by Musk's public statements about the influence his control of Starlink gives him over events such as the war in Ukraine.
Eutelsat's low Earth orbit "constellation" numbers over 600 satellites since its merger with British firm OneWeb in 2023 -- a figure far short of the thousands operated by Starlink.

Godrej Properties plans its largest-ever bond issue: Report

Godrej Properties, the real estate unit of India's Godrej Industries, is set to tap the corporate bond market later this month with its largest issue to date, three sources aware of the matter said. ADVERTISEMENT The real estate developer is likely to raise around 20 billion rupees ($230 million) through the sale of shorter duration bonds, with a maturity of three to five years, the sources said last week. "The company could look to tap the market after the central bank's monetary policy decision this week, in the hope that yields ease further," one of the sources said. All the sources requested anonymity as the talks are private. Godrej Properties did not reply to a Reuters email seeking comment. The bonds are rated 'AA+', and this will be the company's first bond issuance in nearly a year. Last September, it had raised around 650 million rupees through the sale of five-year bonds at an annual coupon of 8.50%. ADVERTISEMENT Godrej Properties has borrowed 25 billion rupees through bonds since September 2023. The upcoming sale would take its outstanding issuances to 45 billion rupees. The Mumbai-based firm last month acquired around 50 acres of land for premium plotted residential units in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Alphabet's CapitalG, Nvidia in talks to fund Vast Data at up to $30 billion valuation, sources say

Alphabet's growth-stage venture arm CapitalG and Nvidia are in talks to invest in artificial intelligence infrastructure provider Vast Data in a new funding round that could value the startup as high as $30 billion, two sources said. The startup is raising several billion dollars from tech giants, private equity and venture capital investors, which could make it one of the most valuable AI startups, the two sources with knowledge of the matter said, as companies building the backbone for the AI boom come into sharper focus. CapitalG and existing backer Nvidia are in discussions to participate in the round, which could close in the next few weeks, according to the sources, who requested anonymity to speak on private matters. New York-headquartered Vast Data develops storage technology specifically designed for large AI data centres, enabling efficient data movement between graphics processors (GPUs) made by the likes of Nvidia. Its clients include companies such as Elon Musk's xAI and CoreWeave, and its value in the AI supply chain makes it an attractive acquisition target, bankers and analysts said. Nvidia declined to comment, while Vast Data and CapitalG did not respond to requests for comment. TechCrunch earlier reported Vast Data's fundraising efforts, but the valuation of up to $30 billion and the expected involvement of CapitalG and Nvidia have not been reported previously. Vast Data CEO Renen Halak has said the company is free cash flow positive. The company earned $200 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) by January 2025, with a strong backlog of orders and projections to grow ARR to $600 million next year, according to a separate source familiar with its financials. The company has raised roughly $380 million to date, and its last funding round in 2023 valued it at $9.1 billion. Vast Data has said it would consider an initial public offering at the right time. While no listing is imminent, according to another source familiar with the matter, investors and bankers view the data infrastructure firm as a likely IPO candidate. Vast Data last year hired Amy Shapero, its first chief financial officer, who was previously in the same role at publicly listed e-commerce giant Shopify, in a move that could signal preparations for an IPO. Mergers and acquisitions activity has also been heating up in the sector, and Nvidia has been acquiring companies that add complementary software and hardware products beyond its flagship GPUs. In 2020, it bought networking chip and cable maker Mellanox, which has helped Nvidia build integrated systems featuring its latest Blackwell chips. It has also acquired software companies such as Run:ai, which helps engineers optimise data centre AI hardware. Vast Data's storage architecture is based on a system of flash storage devices and other off-the-shelf hardware, combined with its specialised software for data access and movement. The company says adopting its technology can reduce the cost of building and running large AI models. Several companies, such as Weka and DDN, are pursuing similar efforts, but analysts and industry executives say Vast Data's technology is more mature than that of its rivals. Shares of Nvidia slumped 2.3% and Alphabet stock sunk 1.4% during regular trading on Friday.

RBI MPC Meeting Starts Today: Status Quo Or Another Rate Cut On Wednesday? What Economists Say

Last Updated: RBI MPC Meeting August 2025: With the repo rate at 5.5 per cent after three consecutive cuts totalling 100 bps, economists are divided on the RBI's upcoming policy decision. RBI MPC Meeting August 2025: The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), led by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, will begin its three-day deliberation today, August 4. The policy decision will be announced on Wednesday, August 6. With the repo rate currently at 5.5 per cent after three consecutive rate cuts totalling 100 basis points, economists are divided on whether the central bank will go for another reduction or pause for now. Most experts believe the central bank may hold rates steady this time, especially after having frontloaded rate cuts. The RBI MPC has already effected three back-to-back reductions in the short-term lending rate (repo), cumulating to 100 basis points (bps). Controlled inflation and resilient domestic growth have provided the RBI with some room to manoeuvre, but external headwinds — particularly the 25 per cent US tariffs on Indian exports — have clouded the near-term economic outlook. Bank of Baroda's Chief Economist Madan Sabnavis said the monetary policy decision is unlikely to be swayed by June's low inflation or the latest US tariff development, as much of this had already been factored in during the earlier policy review. He anticipates a marginal downward revision in the inflation projection to 3.5–3.6 per cent but does not expect a rate cut at this stage. 'Therefore, the tariff per se may not really change the view on growth, though it would be interesting to see how the RBI looks at this number. There can be a slight downward revision in inflation projection for the year by 0.1-0.2 per cent, i.e. 3.5-3.6 per cent instead of 3.7 per cent," Sabnavis said, as per news agency PTI. CareEdge Ratings also believes the RBI will likely hold off on further cuts. It said the central bank has already responded proactively to inflation trends and would prefer to wait and assess the transmission of previous rate reductions before making any fresh move. 'Hence, we do not expect further rate cuts unless growth concerns aggravate. While the US reciprocal tariff rate and proposed penalty are concerning, the RBI may opt to wait till we get further clarity on this front. With a forward-looking outlook, the RBI would be focusing on inflation in the quarters ahead," it said. India's retail inflation, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), declined to 2.1 per cent in June 2025, the latest available data. It is the lowest inflation print after January 2019. The CPI-based inflation had stood at 2.82 per cent in May 2025 and 5.08 per cent in June 2024. The RBI is mandated to keep inflation at 4%, with a tolerance band of (-/+) 2%. In June 2025 policy, the RBI revised its retail inflation projection for FY26 to 3.7%, down from its earlier estimate of 4%. This marks the lowest average retail inflation forecast by the central bank in recent years. Several Economists Expect Rate Cut However, some economists are still leaning towards one final round of easing. Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA, said that with CPI inflation falling to 2.1 per cent in June and staying well below the RBI's 4 per cent target, there may be space for one last 25-basis-point rate cut. She also flagged the downside risks to GDP growth stemming from the US tariffs and the resulting rupee volatility. 'Further, the tariffs imposed by the US will pose a downside risk to GDP growth, while admittedly injecting volatility into the INR. In our view, the balance remains slightly tilted towards a final rate cut of 25 bps in the August 2025 policy review," Nayar said. Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist at Crisil, echoed this view, saying the risks to economic growth currently outweigh those linked to inflation. 'We anticipate a 25 basis point reduction in the repo rate, as inflation has been lower than anticipated," he noted. The six-member MPC includes Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta, Executive Director Rajiv Ranjan, and three external members: Nagesh Kumar, Saugata Bhattacharya, and Ram Singh. With inflation under control and economic uncertainty mounting, Wednesday's policy outcome will reveal whether the RBI continues on the path of monetary easing or chooses to pause and observe the broader global and domestic environment. In the previous policy review in June 2025, the RBI MPC had announced a surprise 50 basis points repo rate cut, bringing the key policy rate down to 5.5%, and a 100-bps CRR reduction as the RBI signalled confidence in the easing of price pressures amid a supportive global and domestic backdrop. tags : RBI MPC RBI MPC Meeting view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 04, 2025, 08:53 IST News business » economy RBI MPC Meeting Starts Today: Status Quo Or Another Rate Cut On Wednesday?
