PM heaps praise on World Bank country director
During a farewell meeting, Benhassine did not hold back, applauding Sharif and his economic crew especially Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb for steering Pakistan away from a catastrophic default and laying down the yellow brick road to recovery.
'Under Prime Minister Sharif's leadership, the economic team saved Pakistan from the threat of default and set it on the path to stability,' Benhassine said, calling the PM's game plan a roadmap out of ruin. 'Despite daunting challenges, your leadership helped transition the country from crisis to growth.'
Top ministers and World Bank brass – including Operations Manager Giles Dragelis – turned the meeting into a full-blown praise parade for Team Shehbaz, hailing their gritty handling of Pakistan's fiscal nightmares. Benhassine, who served through one of Pakistan's rockiest financial chapters, did not forget the 2022 floods, either. 'You worked tirelessly for the relief and rehabilitation of flood-hit communities,' he said, adding that the nation would not forget the government's hustle.
Sharif, ever the diplomat, returned the love and praise with gratitude and applause for Benhassine's role in beefing up the World Bank's game plan in Pakistan.
'You played a pivotal role in strengthening the partnership between Pakistan and the World Bank,' Sharif said. 'Your cooperation and dedication will be remembered in kind words by the people of this country.'
Sharif chalked up the turnaround to grit, grind, and some serious elbow grease. 'Stability didn't happen overnight, it is the result of tireless work by a dedicated team,' he declared. With heavyweights like Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, and Muhammad Aurangzeb in the room, Sharif bid farewell to Benhassine with a hint of sentiment.

Pakistan's 'fragmented payments system' Speaking to Business Recorder, Briestenska explained that one of the biggest challenges in Neem's ambitions is is Pakistan's fragmented payments system. 'Most businesses rely on multiple providers and cash-heavy processes, which often lead to errors, fraud, and higher costs. Neem solves this by offering one integration for all payment flows, Raast, IBFT, wallets, and cards — through our collections and disbursement APIs. This cuts complexity, reduces fraud, and brings costs down,' she said. Another major challenge is the lack of full-stack infrastructure. Preparations for PM's visit, CPEC JCC session reviewed
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, on Tuesday, chaired a high-level meeting to review preparations for the upcoming Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) session of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the prime minister's planned visit to Beijing. The minister said that the future of CPEC should focus on quality over quantity, stressing that only well-planned, high-impact projects will move forward to ensure sustainability and strengthen Pakistan's institutions. Sharing details of his recent visit to China, he said that, on the prime minister's behalf, he invited President Xi Jinping to visit Islamabad in 2026 to celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China. He added that the prime minister's upcoming trip to Beijing will formally launch CPEC Phase-II, during which, both sides are expected to set clear priorities and agree on concrete, measurable outcomes. The minister stressed the need to expand Pakistan's trade and exports to China and directed that visa processing for genuine businesspersons be expedited to avoid unnecessary delays. He also called for a practical, results-oriented plan to diversify exports, strengthen industrial linkages, and fully utilise the expanded market access available under CPEC. On human resource development, Iqbal stressed the need to make full use of the 10,000 training opportunities offered by China in various sectors. He directed that a transparent system be put in place to ensure the right people are selected for the right training, in line with institutional needs, so Pakistan can achieve lasting capacity-building and organisational benefits. The meeting reviewed progress on key priority areas, including the Multan–Sukkur Motorway, training programmes for IT graduates, artificial intelligence infrastructure, industrial relocation, special economic zones, mining, and agriculture. The minister directed that detailed, data-based studies be carried out on China's industrial relocation patterns and that Pakistan's export strengths be carefully matched with Chinese market needs. Noting that China imports goods worth over US$2 trillion annually, he stressed that Pakistan should set a clear target of capturing at least US$30–50 billion of this trade by improving competitiveness and preparing its key sectors. He directed that an outcome-oriented study be completed to identify high-potential sectors and products for export to China, with the objective of creating an exportable surplus, attracting sustained investment, and strengthening the balance of payments over the medium term. He reiterated the need for policy continuity and institutional reforms to realise long-term CPEC gains, and affirmed close engagement with the private sector, academia, and research institutions in industrial cooperation, technology, agriculture, energy, and human resource development. KP, G-B and AJK: PM orders wide-reaching relief to flood victims
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed an intensified and wide-reaching response to relief and rehabilitation efforts across the flood-affected area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), as heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc. Chairing a high-level emergency meeting to take stock of the situation in wake of recent devastating floods, the prime minister called for an uninterrupted electricity supply to the flood-stricken districts of KP for at least one week. He also instructed that all formalities related to the disbursement of financial aid to victims be completed without delay. Sharif further ordered that the number of aid trucks delivering essential supplies be doubled immediately. He also directed key federal ministers to proceed to flood-affected areas to oversee and support relief efforts, including Minister for Water Resources Moeen Wattoo in AJK and Minister for Public Affairs Rana Mubashir Iqbal in Swabi. He lauded the on-ground presence and contributions of Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam, Power Minister Awais Leghari, Communications Minister Aleem Khan, and Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Yousaf, describing their engagement with victims and involvement in infrastructure restoration as 'commendable.' Relief operations are underway in coordination with federal and provincial authorities, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and military and civilian relief agencies. 'It is our national duty to stand with our brethren in this time of hardship,' Sharif said, expressing appreciation for rescue and engineering teams from the Pakistan Army, National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and other emergency agencies. Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah informed the meeting that 37 out of 49 damaged power feeders had been restored. Power Minister Awais Leghari said that electricity supply to hospitals in the flood-affected areas has been fully restored. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said that telecom connectivity had largely been reinstated, with 190 out of 210 affected mobile towers back online. Emergency call services, he added, are now accessible free of charge via 911 in all impacted regions. Minister for Communications and Works Aleem Khan said that strategic Skardu-Jaglot route has also been reopened, alleviating concerns over food and fuel shortages in Gilgit-Baltistan. He said that supply chains are now functioning without interruption. NDMA officials told the meeting that more than 25,000 people have been rescued since the onset of flooding. A total of 411 medical camps have been established nationwide – 308 of them in KP alone.
