‘Telangana records over 50,000 new cancer cases every year'

The Hindu22-06-2025
Every year, Telangana records around 50,000 to 55,000 new cancer cases. These numbers are not just statistics, they represent the lives of individuals and families being profoundly impacted by this deadly disease. Early detection is key to survival, said Telangana Minister for Health C. Damodar Raja Narasimha while speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad on Sunday (June 22).
To tackle this rising challenge, the Minister announced a series of public health interventions aimed at decentralising cancer care. 'We are planning to introduce mobile cancer screening units in every district and will also establish dedicated cancer care centres. These facilities will offer comprehensive services, including screening, diagnosis, day-care chemotherapy and palliative support,' he stated.
Reflecting on the journey since its inception in 2000, hospital's chairman and actor, Nandamuri Balakrishna credited the transformation of the hospital, from a 110-bed facility to 700 beds, to the steadfast support of donors and well-wishers. 'Now, we are setting our sights on a new milestone, a thousand-bed cancer hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Work on the first phase will begin soon,' he announced.
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma attended the inaugural function as chief guest and inaugurated the Linear Accelerator, a radiotherapy machine installed at the hospital.

Balakrishna launches Amaravati campus works of Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital

Hindupur MLA and actor Nandamuri Balakrishna on Wednesday, August 13, launched the construction of the Amaravati campus of the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at Thullur. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Balakrishna said the new facility would be built on 21 acres and envisioned as a Centre of Excellence for comprehensive cancer treatment, research, and patient-centric care. The hospital would combine advanced medical technology with a multidisciplinary approach, housed in a purpose-built modern infrastructure, he added. The project will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, a 500-bed facility offering oncology services will be set up, adopting an integrated care model covering prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. This phase is being developed with an investment of ₹750 crore, and operations are expected to start by 2028. In the second phase, an additional 500 beds will be added along with specialised departments, research wings, and enhanced patient amenities, creating a regional referral centre for complex and advanced cancer cases. According to the hospital, the foundation stone for the cancer care facility was laid in 2019 after the TDP government allotted land. However, construction was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. With the TDP-led NDA government back in power in the State, all hurdles have now been cleared, and the government has allotted an additional six acres for the project. Mr. Balakrishna, who is also chairman of the cancer hospital, launched the works by performing traditional puja rituals. Ministers P. Narayana and Satya Kumar Yadav, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath, Heritage Foods Executive Director Nara Brahmani, Trust Board member Nori Dattatreyudu, and others participated in the ceremony.

Health minister meets Advocate General to discuss legal strategy on local quota

In a bid to defend the interests of Telangana students in the ongoing legal battle over local quota in medical admissions, Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha along with Health Secretary Christina Z. Chongthu held a meeting with Advocate General (AG) A. Sudarshan Reddy on Monday (July 28). The discussion, held ahead of a Supreme Court hearing scheduled for August 5, focused on the State's legal strategy to uphold Government Order (GO) 33. The GO, introduced last year, was aimed at ensuring that medical seats reserved under the State quota are allotted exclusively to local students. The policy is currently facing a legal challenge from students studying in other States who are seeking inclusion in Telangana's local quota. During the meeting, the Minister urged the Advocate General to present strong arguments in court to protect the rights of Telangana's students. He also suggested that the government consider engaging senior legal experts, if required, to strengthen the case in the Supreme Court.

Health Minister facilitates free heart surgery for eight-year-old from Karnataka

Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha extended a compassionate gesture to a migrant family from Karnataka by facilitating a free life-saving heart surgery for their eight-year-old daughter at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). The child, Aishwarya, who was frequently falling ill, was recently diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect, a congenital heart condition. Her parents, Chandrakanth and his wife, who work at a hotel and reside in Malakpet, were informed that the surgery would cost at least ₹5 lakh. Lacking financial resources and not possessing an Arogyasri card, ration card, or even a local Aadhaar, the family was left in despair. The couple then approached the Health Minister and explained their plight after which he directed officials to admit the child to NIMS and instructed that the surgery and all related medical care be provided free of cost. Following the Minister's intervention, on July 4, a team of doctors successfully conducted the heart surgery. Aishwarya has since made a full recovery and has been discharged. On Thursday, the family visited the Secretariat to meet the Health Minister and expressed their gratitude.
