Why Gautam Gambhir flew back to India ahead of series opener vs England?
Just a week before the opening Test of India's crucial five-match series against England, head coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back to India due to a family emergency, according to media reports. Gambhir had only recently joined the squad in England to oversee their preparation for the highly anticipated tour, which kicks off at Headingley, Leeds, on June 20. His sudden departure has come on the day India was scheduled to begin its intra-squad four-day warm-up game, a key part of their build-up. While the nature of the emergency remains undisclosed, the team management has confirmed that Gambhir's return was necessary and unavoidable. Despite his absence, the team is expected to continue preparations under the guidance of the assistant coaches. Gambhir Leaves England Due to Family Emergency According to media reports, Gambhir was compelled to return to India at short notice following an urgent situation at home. While no official statement has been released by the BCCI, support staff within the team have confirmed that the head coach has left the touring camp temporarily. Reports suggest Gambhir's departure was unforeseen and that the coaching unit will ensure continuity in preparations in his absence. India's Test Team Faces New-Look Challenge The upcoming tour marks a significant transition in Indian Test cricket, with stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from the longest format last month. With India heading into English conditions without two of their most experienced batters, the spotlight is now firmly on new captain Shubman Gill and a crop of young players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan and Sai Sudharsan. Tough English Tour on the Cards The five-Test series will run from June to August and will be played across five iconic venues—Leeds, Birmingham, Lord's, The Oval and Manchester. With Gambhir expected to rejoin the squad once the personal matter is resolved, India's young brigade will aim to begin the WTC cycle with a strong showing in what promises to be a tough away tour.

RCB's senior official Nikhil Sosale granted interim bale by Karnataka High Court
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bengaluru's senior official, Nikhil Sosale, who was arrested over the June 4 stampede during the team's maiden IPL title triumph celebrations, has been granted interim bail by the Karnataka High Court, according to ESPNcricinfo. More than a week after the incident, Sosale and two officials from DNA Networks, the event management company associated with RCB, were released on specific conditions, the most notable of which was the surrender of their passports, according to ESPNcricinfo. ESPNCricinfo also reported that Sosale and all RCB officials who are part of the management team are likely to undergo an internal investigation by the parent company, Diageo. The incident occurred when thousands of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite players. Eleven people lost their lives and several were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of RCB. The Karnataka Police had filed an FIR against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee, RCB, among others, concerning the stampede incident. Last Saturday, two top Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials, secretary A. Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, resigned, citing 'moral responsibility.' KSCA President Raghuram Bhat confirmed the development, saying that the resignations were discussed and accepted during an emergency meeting. He assured that the cricket body will cooperate with the investigation. 'When the inquiry takes place, we have already told the government and the High Court that we will never shy away from anything that is there. We are ready to cooperate with the investigation,' Bhat told reporters. The Bengaluru Police also filed the first information report (FIR) against the popular IPL franchise last Thursday, as per ESPNCricinfo. The police have said that RCB was not given permission to conduct the event at the stadium. RCB has been listed as the first accused in the FIR, along with DNA Entertainment, the franchise's event partners, and the KSCA, which controls the stadium. RCB expressed 'heartfelt condolences' to the families of the deceased in a statement, and since then has resorted to silence over the matter. (ANI)

"The time is perfect for a shooting revolution": World record holder Sift Kaur Samra backs SLI
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Indian star athlete Sift Kaur Samra, who bagged a bronze medal on Thursday in the 50m rifle 3 positions women's event at the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Munich, voiced strong support for the upcoming Shooting League of India (SLI), calling it a 'game-changer for the sport in the country.' The 23-year-old from Punjab, who scripted history with a world record score of 469.6 in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions final at the 2022 Asian Games, believes that India's first-ever shooting league will open up new dimensions for shooters, fans, and future talent alike. 'This is the first time something like this is happening in Indian shooting, and I think it's a huge step forward. People still do not know much about shooting as a sport. A league format brings it closer to audiences and gives us shooters a whole new platform to grow--both competitively and personally,' Sift said as quoted from a press release from SLI. While she is no stranger to the international stage--with multiple medals including Asian Games gold and silver, and a previous ISSF World Cup bronze--Sift is especially intrigued by the league's format that will pit India's top shooters against each other in team-based rivalries. 'We are used to competing individually or as national teams internationally. But in the league, we will be playing against each other--possibly alongside international shooters too. That is new, that is exciting, and it will definitely be fun. It is a format where you win or lose in a single shot--there is no safety net of world rankings or qualification points. It is pure sport, and people will love watching that,' she added. Sift also highlighted the league's potential to inspire the next generation of shooters, likening its potential impact to the IPL in cricket and said, 'I have had people call my parents asking how to get into shooting. If a league like this can be seen on TV or social media, it will create a lot of awareness. Just like the IPL brought visibility to cricket's domestic talent, the Shooting League can do the same for us.' She is also looking forward to connecting with both junior shooters and international athletes through the league and added, 'There are juniors I have never interacted with because we are in different categories. This league will bridge that gap. We will learn from each other--and that is how the sport grows.' Reflecting on the cultural impact of a league, she said, 'People see us winning medals at the World Cup or Asian Games or maybe recognise us from an appearance on TV. But they do not really see the sport. A league will change that--it is fast-paced, it is dramatic, and it will show that shooting is more than just a serious Olympic discipline. It is also a lot of fun.' Sift concluded by expressing excitement for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to begin in November this year and said, 'We are all curious--who will be in which team, who will be rivals, how will it be structured? None of us have experienced this before. But one thing is for sure-- the time is perfect for a shooting revolution, and I cannot wait to be part of it.' (ANI)
