How to watch the 2025 Kentucky Oaks, Friday's Lilies for the Fillies race at Churchill Downs

New York Times02-05-2025
Along with the Derby as the main event, the Kentucky Oaks is this country's longest-running continuous sporting contest. Almost a century and a half before Chappell Roan showed up, this was the original 'Pink Pony Club.' Friday's lily-tinted festivities include the moving Survivor's Parade celebrating breast and ovarian cancer survivors. On Friday at Churchill Downs, we wear pink.

The total purse is $1.5 million, with the first-place finisher take a large chunk of the prize and a blanket of 133 stargazer lilies. The flamingo flowers honor women fighting breast and ovarian cancers. It originated as a 1 1/2-mile race in 1875, and has been set at 1 1/8 since 1982.
Last year's installment, the 150th running, was marked by intermittent rain and soggy track conditions. Thorpedo Anna (and jockey Brian Hernandez) won by four lengths on 4-1 odds. Unfortunately, it may be more of the same this time around — current Louisville forecasts for Friday predict cloudy skies in the morning and scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Churchill Downs gates open at 9 a.m. ET.
The favorite in this year's field is Good Cheer, an undefeated filly going for her seventh win in Friday's Grade 1 gallop. Her morning line odds are 6-5. Second-best odds belong to La Cara (6-1), followed by Quietside (8-1). Post position No. 1 Early On is far behind at 30-1 odds.
Every winner since 2018 has finished between 1:48 and 1:51. The all-time record at this current race length is held by Shedaresthedevil (2020). On a personal note, this correspondent's all-time favorite name for a winning horse is Lemons Forever (2006).

1977 — 'While the big boys were back in the barn resting for the Kentucky Derby, a dozen of the fanciest fillies in the land competed today in the 103d Kentucky Oaks — the 'sister race' to the classic — and they were led home by a 10‐to‐1 outsider named Sweet Alliance…'
1982 — 'On the ladies' day before the Kentucky Derby, the grand old gentleman of racing, Bill Shoemaker, rode Blush With Pride to a three-quarter-length victory over Before Dawn today before a record Kentucky Oaks crowd of 52,430…'

1992 — 'Two of the country's star fillies were outrun today when the long shot Luv Me Luv Me Not survived a tight photo finish to win the 118th Kentucky Oaks, the premier race for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs…'
2001 — 'Flute finished in 1:48.85, the second-fastest Oaks since it was lengthened to a mile and an eighth in 1981. Second choice among 13 starters, Flute, the daughter of Seattle Slew, returned $8.60 on a $2 bet to win. The long shots Real Cozzy and Collect Call were second and third. Fleet Renee, the 8-5 favorite, ran fourth. The crowd of 102,904 was the second highest in Oaks history…'

10 Best Beers For Tailgating This Football Season

Football fans tailgating before a game. Getty Images There's nothing quite like tailgating at before a football game. The smell of burgers and brats on the grill. The hum of conversation around folding tables piled with chips and dip. Music blaring from a truck bed. And, of course, coolers filled with ice-cold beer. The right beer can set the tone for the whole day—whether you're starting at sunrise for a college game or huddling around a heater for a late-season NFL showdown. Tailgating beer must do a lot of heavy lifting. It needs to be approachable enough for everyone to enjoy, available across much of the country, and sturdy enough in flavor to pair with parking-lot cuisine. And in the best cases, it should have a little personality, something that makes you glad you grabbed it from the cooler. The best tailgate coolers are like a well-balanced team roster: a few veterans, some flashy rookies, and a couple of wild cards to keep things interesting. I've rounded up ten beers that cover the full range of game-day needs. With a cooler stocked like this, you're ready for whatever game day throws your way. Just don't forget the ice. Miller High Life. Miller Brewing Company Sometimes, tradition wins. Miller High Life has been fueling tailgates for generations. At 4.6% ABV, it's light enough for all-day drinking, with a gentle malt sweetness and a lively carbonation that really earns its 'Champagne of Beers' nickname. It's also easy on the wallet, which means you can fill the cooler without blowing the food budget. Hazy Little Thing IPA. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company For fans who like a little haze and hops with their football, Sierra Nevada's Hazy Little Thing delivers tropical fruit aromas and a juicy mouthfeel without overwhelming bitterness. At 6.7% ABV, it's a touch stronger than some tailgate beers, but it's so smooth you won't notice. Widely available in cans, it's the perfectly sippable IPA that even your hop-shy friends might enjoy. Athletic Upside Dawn Golden Ale Athletic Brewing Company Athletic Upside Dawn Golden Ale Tailgating is about inclusion, and not everyone is drinking alcohol on game day. Athletic Brewing's Upside Dawn is crisp, golden, and flavorful enough to hold its own next to full-strength beers. With zero alcohol and only 45 calories, it's an excellent option for designated drivers, early morning starts, or anyone pacing themselves for the long haul. Guinness Draught Stout Guinness Brewing Co. Guinness Draught Stout Guinness Draught might seem like an odd choice for a tailgate, but once the air turns crisp, it shines. At just 4.2% ABV, it's more sessionable than many lagers, and its smooth, creamy texture makes it an excellent companion to hearty fare like chili, BBQ, and grilled sausages. Best of all, its cans are equipped with nitrogen widgets that make it easy to get that pub-style pour in the parking lot. Modelo Oro Modelo Brewing Company Modelo Oro These days, Mexican lagers are all the craze due to their fresh flavors and extreme drinkability. Modelo Oro, launched in 2023, might be one of the best. It offers all the crisp refreshment of a light beer with a touch more flavor than most in the category. Best of all, at 90 calories, it's a guilt-free option for hot-weather tailgates, especially when served ice-cold with a wedge of lime. Firestone Walker Oaktoberfest Firestone Walker Brewing Company Firestone Walker Oaktoberfest For fall football, few styles beat a good Märzen or festbier. First crafted in Bavaria in the 16th Century, it is a beer designed for celebrations. Firestone Walker's Oaktoberfest is toasty, malty, and just a touch sweet, making it a natural pairing for bratwurst and pretzels. It's a seasonal release, so grab it while you can; it might just be the beer you remember most from this season's tailgates. Busch Light Every tailgate cooler needs a workhorse, a brew that can fuel games of cornhole and beer pong without sacrificing drinkability. Busch Light is that beer. Mild, clean, and incredibly affordable, it's a no-frills beer that works as well in the heat of September as it does layered under gloves in November. Bell's Two Hearted IPA Bells Brewing Company Bell's Two Hearted IPA A hop lover's dream, Two Hearted is balanced, piney, and floral, with a steady malt backbone. It's that perfect blend of flavors that has made it one of the most respected IPAs in America. At 7% ABV, it's a beer that is designed to be savored with each sip while you discuss the merits of your team with everyone in earshot. Bring a six-pack for the craft-beer fans in your group and watch their eyes light up. Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils. Oskar Blues Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils A well-crafted pilsner should be a requirement in every cooler in the parking lot before the game. For over a decade, the team at Oskar Blues, the first craft brewer to can its beers, has been offering Mama's Little Yella Pils, and it deserves a place in your lineup. Crisp, slightly floral, and brewed with traditional Saaz hops, it offers more flavor than most light lagers but remains just as refreshing. In cans and with nationwide distribution, it's a great craft option that won't intimidate the less adventurous drinkers in your crew. Dogfish Head SeaQuench Ale Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Dogfish Head SeaQuench Ale SeaQuench Ale is a blend of Kölsch, Gose, and Berliner Weisse styles, brewed with lime juice, lime peel, and sea salt. The result is tart, zesty, and incredibly refreshing, perfect for cutting through the richness of tailgate fare like wings or loaded nachos. If your game day falls on an unseasonably warm afternoon, this is the beer you'll be reaching for. Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys among star-studded pairings in new-look US Open mixed doubles event

When it came to finding a partner for the newly formatted mixed doubles event at this year's U.S. Open, it seemed like a no-brainer for World No. 6-ranked Madison Keys. The reigning Australian Open champion is partnered with Frances Tiafoe, with whom Keys shares an almost sibling-like relationship. 'It was pretty easy. When they announced the new format and all of the things, he was kind of the first person that popped into my head,' Keys told The Post. 'I've known him for many, many years. We lived in the same apartment building for a very long time, and I feel like I basically had to try to keep him alive. I just really enjoy being around him. I really like giving him s–t and just kind of poking fun at him. And I feel like he's also obviously a phenomenal tennis player. 'It just felt like if I was going to do this, I wanted to do it with someone who I was going to just have the most fun with.' 3 Frances Tiafoe reacts during an Aug. 13 match. Getty Images 3 Madison Keys is pictured during an Aug. 13 match. Imagn Images Keys and Tiafoe are among the 16 pairings taking part in this year's event, which has gone through a drastic shake-up that has been met with intrigue and criticism. The tournament begins Tuesday with a field that was shrunk from 32 to 16 and includes some of tennis' top players in the world, including 10 major singles champions and a combined 54 Grand Slam titles among them. Carlos Alcaraz is playing with Emma Raducanu; Venus Williams will play with Reilly Opelka; and Jessica Pegula is teaming up with Jack Draper, to name a few. Jannik Sinner is slated to play with Katerina Siniakova, but after Sinner retired from the Cincinnati Open final on Monday due to illness, there is some question whether he'll still compete in the mixed doubles in Queens. The mixed doubles will take place over a two-day period — the first two rounds will be held Tuesday, followed by the semifinals and final Wednesday — all at Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong stadium, with the winning pair taking home a $1 million shared prize. Teams will only need to win four games in order to win a set, and there will be no advantage scoring. 3 Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys are pictured after a December 2022 doubles match. AP In the final, it will remain a best-of-three-set match, but the team will need to win six games to clinch the set. The new format hasn't come without its critics, in particular, those deemed doubles specialists, who are missing out on getting to play in the revamped tournament. Sem Verbeek, the Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, told BBC that his 'heart is bleeding' over the format change for the U.S. Open event. While the superstar pairings will draw more attention, it leaves a lot of doubles specialists missing out on competing. 'I'm not going to actively root against it for it not to be a success,' he said. 'The positive I can think of is that there's going to be more people that can see the top single stars earlier in the tournament when they are maybe a bit more accessible to the public. But as a doubles athlete, my heart is bleeding.'
