"Of six, two are critically injured with burns": Rescuees from Singapore container ship rushed to hospital in Mangaluru

India Gazette10-06-2025
Mangaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 10 (ANI): Of the 18 rescued crew members of the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503, six were brought to the AJ Hospital for medical treatment post-midnight on Tuesday. Dinesh Kadam, Plastic Surgeon at AJ Hospital, said that two rescuees had critical injuries with 35 to 40 per cent burns.
The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Surat, carrying the rescued crew members who sustained injuries in the vessel fire, arrived at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), Panambur, earlier.
According to Plastic Surgeon Kadam, the six rescuees are from multiple nationalities, including Chinese and Indonesian. Of the six rescued crew members, two have suffered critical injuries.
'We have received six patients. All of them have burns. Three are Chinese nationals, two are from Burma (Myanmar), and one is from Indonesia. Two are critically injured with 35-40 per cent burns. Mainly, they have airway burns, that is, respiratory burns, which are much more severe. They have breathing problems. We have to monitor closely over a few days and see how they do. Right now, we're giving all the attention and critical care,' Kadam told reporters here.
The Indian Navy, in a closely coordinated search and rescue operation with the Coast Guard, DG Shipping, and other stakeholders, safely rescued 18 out of 22 crew members of the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 after a fire broke out.
'The inputs of the incident were received at IFC IOR at about 0930 hours on June 9. INS Surat and a Dornier aircraft were immediately deployed by the Indian Navy to render necessary assistance, and at about 1630 hours, 18 out of 22 crew members were safely rescued by Surat. First aid has been rendered to the injured crew members, and the ship is presently proceeding to New Mangalore for disembarkation and further medical management,' the Navy said in a statement.
According to the Indian Navy, the vessel was carrying 22 crew members, including eight Chinese, six Taiwanese, five Myanmarese, and three Indonesian nationals. Following the explosion and escalation of the fire, the crew abandoned the ship.
'18 crew members have been rescued, while four remain missing. A search and rescue operation is currently underway,' it said.
The MV had reported an internal container explosion and a resultant major fire onboard. The incident occurred at around 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal, Kerala and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi.
According to a release, preliminary reports suggest that 10-15 containers have fallen overboard. The vessel was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Nhava Sheva, Mumbai, with an expected time of arrival (ETA) on 10 June. (ANI)

3 Killed In Fire At Illegal Oil Well In Indonesia

Jakarta: Firefighters in Indonesia are struggling to contain a three-day-old fire at an illegal oil well that has killed at least three people and injured two others, a disaster relief official said on Tuesday. Some 750 people have been evacuated from the densely populated areas around the site, located in Central Java province's Blora region, Agung Tri, a member of the provincial disaster mitigation agency's rapid response team, told Reuters. The oil well was being operated without a permit by local residents when it caught fire on Sunday. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but residents living near the well said they heard an explosion before the fire broke out, Agung said. The relief agency has deployed four excavators in an attempt to use soil to extinguish the fire, he added, but firefighters were still battling massive flames on Tuesday and facing difficulties moving equipment into the hilly terrain surrounding the site. Evacuated residents have, meanwhile, been moved to temporary shelters and local government buildings nearby. Local communities in the mineral-rich Indonesian archipelago have taken over hundreds of oil wells abandoned by companies after they proved to be no longer economically viable. Many are illegally operated with lax safety standards. Indonesian authorities have recently moved to legalise those operations, issuing a regulation in June that allows small companies to partner with residents. The policy is intended to boost the country's oil production while improving safety standards and protecting the welfare of communities.

Gaza Aid Ship With 1,200 Tons Of Food Nears Israeli Port After Leaving Cyprus

Cyprus: After setting off from Cyprus, a ship loaded with 1,200 tons of food supplies for the Gaza Strip was approaching the Israeli port of Ashdod on Tuesday in a renewed effort to alleviate the worsening crisis as famine threatens the Palestinian territory. The Panamanian-flagged vessel is loaded with 52 containers carrying food aid such as pasta, rice, baby food, and canned goods. Israeli customs officials had screened the aid at the Cypriot port of Limassol, from where the ship departed on Monday. Some 700 tons of the aid is from Cyprus, purchased with money donated by the United Arab Emirates to the so-called Amalthea Fund, set up last year for donors to help with seaborne aid. The rest comes from Italy, the Maltese government, a Catholic religious order in Malta, and the Kuwaiti nongovernmental organisation Al Salam Association. ' The situation is beyond dire,' Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos told The Associated Press. Cyprus was the staging area last year for 22,000 tons of aid deliveries by ship directly to Gaza through a pier operated by the international charity World Central Kitchen and a US military-run docking facility known as the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore system. By late July 2024, aid groups pulled out of the project, ending a mission plagued by repeated weather and security problems that limited how much food and other emergency supplies could get to those in need. Cypriot Foreign Ministry said Tuesday's mission is led by the United Nations but is a coordinated effort — once offloaded at Ashdod, UN aid employees would arrange for the aid to be trucked to storage areas and food stations operated by the World Central Kitchen. The charity, which was behind the first aid shipment to Gaza from Cyprus last year aboard a tug-towed barge, is widely trusted in the battered territory. 'The contribution of everyone involved is crucial and their commitment incredible,' Mr Kombos said. Shipborne deliveries can bring much larger quantities of aid than the air drops that several nations have recently made in Gaza. The latest shipment comes a day after Hamas said it has accepted a new proposal from Arab mediators for a ceasefire. Israel has not approved the latest proposal so far. Israel announced plans to reoccupy Gaza City and other heavily populated areas after ceasefire talks stalled last month, raising the possibility of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which experts say is sliding into famine. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin has dismissed reports of starvation in Gaza are 'lies' promoted by Hamas. But the UN last week warned that starvation and malnutrition in the Palestinian territory are at their highest levels since the war began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which the militants abducted 251 people and killed around 1,200, mostly civilians. Gaza's Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals, said the Palestinian death count from 22 months of war has passed 62,000. It does not say how many were civilians or combatants, but says women and children make up around half the dead.
