Lawyers want to participate in inquest

Kota Kinabalu: Lawyers representing the family of Zara Qairina will apply to participate in the upcoming coroner's inquest into her death, expressing hope that the proceedings will run smoothly and conclude within a short timeframe. The move follows the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to order an inquest under subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code to determine the cause and circumstances of Zara Qairina's death, including whether any criminal elements were involved. In a statement, the legal team comprising Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan and Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi expressed their gratitude for the Attorney-General's decision, saying all matters they had requested in their Aug 5 letter have been fulfilled. 'Justice for Zara is our main objective in all the actions we take,' they said. The coroner's inquest represents a formal judicial inquiry that will examine the circumstances surrounding the death and determine whether further legal action may be warranted. Hundreds gather outside Sogo in solidarity for Zara Qairina
KUALA LUMPUR: The bustling area outside the Sogo shopping complex here turned into a centre of solidarity and grief as hundreds gathered to demand justice for Zara Qairina Mahathir. The song "Justice For Zara Qairina" filled the air, followed by chants of "Justice for Zara," as people from all walks of life joined the solidarity rally, which began at 8pm today. Organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and attended by social media influencers, participants dressed in black and carried placards and banners bearing the message "Justice For Zara." Amid the chants, participants also shouted "Justice for Haris" in solidarity with Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, 22, who died on July 28 during Palapes training at the Army Training Centre (Pulada) Combat Inoculation Range in Ulu Tiram, Johor. Throughout the gathering, police were stationed at the site to ensure safety, and the rally proceeded peacefully. Meanwhile, a similar rally was held at Lintasan Deasoka in Kota Kinabalu, with participants coming from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Peninsular Malaysia to show their support despite drizzling weather. Participants in Kota Kinabalu also carried placards, posters, and banners with messages of solidarity, including "Justice For Zara," as a show of unity in demanding the truth. Police maintained order, and the event remained peaceful. The rally turned particularly sombre when Saimah Alkan, 37, from Tuaran, took the stage. Hugging her daughter tightly, she managed only a few words before tears flowed, evoking a wave of sympathy among the crowd. Deeply affected by the tragedy, Saimah, a mother of a daughter the same age as the late student, appealed to the government to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation to ensure justice is served for Zara Qairina. The incident involving the Form One student has drawn widespread sympathy, with calls for authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind the case. Zara Qairina's death has sparked a wave of public outcry nationwide and also drawn attention from international social media users, who have expressed support online since last week.

Shouts of 'Justice for Zara' echo as crowds rally in KL, Ipoh

The Malay language daily also reported that participants of various ages began filling the location as early as 8pm on Saturday to gather in solidarity for Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, who was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, in Papar, at about 4am on July 16. Earlier, security personnel were seen monitoring the gathering site to ensure the event proceeded peacefully. Several community activists also delivered speeches of solidarity, demanding justice for the 13-year-old student. Attendees held placards reading "Justice For Zara Qairina" and "We Reject Bullying" while chanting the solidarity slogan. Meanwhile, in Ipoh, Sinar Harian reported thousands gathered peacefully at the #JusticeforZara rally in Taman Rekreasi Sultan Abdul Aziz, also known as Padang Polo, on Saturday. Organised by the Perak People's Awareness Association, the gathering aimed to show solidarity and demand justice for Zara Qairina. Participants carried placards and banners with messages such as "Justice For Zara", "We want justice for sister Zara", "Justice Is Not To Be Silenced", "Justice Must Be Upheld", and "Stop Bullying Now". Earlier, rally participants also performed special prayers and recited prayers for the deceased. To date, the police have taken more than 80 witness statements, including from students, while the Attorney General's Chambers announced that a full inquiry will be conducted in the Coroner's Court to determine the exact cause of death.
