In talks with PM Modi, Brazil's President Lula pitches for more Embraer jets for India

Brasilia/New Delhi, July 8 (UNI) Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva pitched strongly for his country's Embraer jets to increase their presence in India, including through technology transfer and professional training, to become part of New Delhi's regional air connectivity Udaan plan.
In a long series of posts on X, after holding bilateral talks with PM Modi at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia, President Lula also termed it as 'unacceptable' that the two nations with their strong presence on the global stage do not have permanent seats in the UN Security Council.
'It was a great satisfaction to receive Prime Minister Modi. Two remarkable countries like India and Brazil cannot remain distant. The strength of our democracies, the diversity of our cultures, and the vigor of our economies draw us together.
'As members of the G20 and BRICS, we act in defense of multilateralism and in favor of more inclusive global governance.
'It is unacceptable that countries of the stature of India and Brazil do not hold permanent seats on the UN Security Council.'We are natural allies in addressing two of the greatest challenges of our time: the eradication of hunger and poverty and the fight against climate change. I thanked Prime Minister Modi for India's participation in the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.
'The deepening of our partnership also depends on strengthening economic relations. Our trade flow of 12 billion dollars is not commensurate with the scale of our economies. When I was in India twenty years ago, we aimed to reach 15 billion dollars. We are determined to accelerate this goal, tripling that value in the short term.
'Since the G20 summit in New Delhi in September 2023, more than 70 Brazilian trade and investment promotion missions have visited India. During the same period, we received 40 Indian technical visits here.
'I thanked Prime Minister Modi for the recent opening of the Indian market to Brazilian chicken and cotton. The expansion of the MERCOSUR-India agreement could help reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers that still hinder our trade. Currently, only 14% of Brazilian exports to India are covered by the agreement.'Brazil and India can be the engines of a new development model based on clean energies.
'We are already partners in the Global Biofuels Alliance, launched during India's G20 presidency. India is the fastest-growing bioenergy market in the world. The country has set a goal to increase the ethanol blend in gasoline to 20% and the biodiesel proportion in diesel to 5%.'Brazil has half a century of experience with biofuels and is a pioneer in flex-fuel engines. We already add 30% ethanol to gasoline and 15% biodiesel to diesel. I invited India to join the Forever Tropical Forests Fund, which will compensate countries that preserve their forests.
'The future of our relationship will also rest on two other important pillars: technological development and defense.
'India's public digital infrastructure policies, based on open data, codes, and models, contrast with the concentrating dynamics of private companies.
'We aim to create a center of excellence with India to bring this potential to Brazil. We are interested in collaborating on the development and production of vaccines and medicines to strengthen Brazil's health industrial complex.
'With its missions to the Moon, India has established itself as a successful example in space exploration. We had Indian support for the launch of Amazônia 1, the first satellite entirely designed and operated by Brazil.
'In an increasingly polarized world, the pursuit of autonomy aligns our defense policies. The three commanders of the Brazilian Armed Forces have visited India since the beginning of the administration.
'I expressed to Prime Minister Modi EMBRAER's willingness to strengthen its presence in India in partnership with local companies, with technology transfer and professional training. The company's aircraft can help the country realize the UDAN plan so that "all Indians can fly."
'We signed today an Agreement on Combating Terrorism and Transnational Organized Crime that will enhance our cooperation. As part of this effort, the Federal Police will open an attaché office in New Delhi.'
President Lula, referring to the upcoming celebration of Raksha Bandhan, said:
'Dear friend @narendramodi,'In one month, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated, an Indian tradition that honors the bond between siblings. May the symbolism of this festival inspire us to deepen the ties we have built together today.'
Ahead of the talks, the Brazilian President had outlined five priority pillars for their talks.
'Today we are welcoming Prime Minister @narendramodi for a State Visit. In this meeting, we will endorse five priority pillars for joint work over the next decade:
Defense and security
Food and nutritional security
Energy transition and climate change
Digital transformation and emerging technologies
Industrial partnerships in strategic sectors such as aerospace, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and critical minerals
'Brazil and India are sister nations, sharing common interests in the development of the Global South.'

Farmers, workers protest FTAs, warn of corporate takeover of agriculture

Farmer and worker unions on Wednesday staged protests against the Union government's free trade agreements (FTAs), alleging they are damaging India's agricultural sector. As part of the 'Quit Corporates' call given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the Joint Committee of Central Trade Unions, farmers, labourers, tenant farmers, and agricultural workers assembled here, burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump. Speakers compared the India-U.S. FTAs to earlier GATT, Dunkel, and WTO deals, claiming they favour corporate interests at the expense of farmers. They alleged the agreements allow foreign companies to dominate machinery sales and agri produce markets, citing rules such as scrapping 10-year-old tractors as exploitative. Protestors warned that these pacts could devastate farming, transfer land to corporates, and hurt aquaculture through U.S.-imposed tariffs. Their demands included scrapping Trump-era tariffs, implementing the Swaminathan Commission's MSP recommendations for all crops, waiving loans for farmers, tenants, and agricultural labourers, reversing anti-worker labour laws, and protecting public sector enterprises. The protest was addressed by Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham State joint secretary K. Srinivas, BKMY State vice president Bandi Venkateswara Rao, IFTU district secretary Badda Venkata Rao, Rythu Coolie Sangham leader Sheikh Basha, AIKS general secretary S.K. Ghouse, CITU district president R. Lingaraju, Congress Kisan Cell leader Rajanala Ram Mohan Rao, and AITUC district president Reddy Srinivas Dange.

Here's all you should know about the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe, priced at ₹1.35 lakh

Mercedes-Benz has expanded its AMG line-up in India with the introduction of the CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe. Priced at ₹ 1.35 crore (ex-showroom), the two-door performance car is now available for bookings, with deliveries set to begin immediately. Although the engine in this coupe is not a V8, it still lets out throaty growls from the exhaust. It propels the AMG CLE 53 Coupe from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.2 seconds (claimed) and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 kmph, which can be raised to 270 kmph with an optional package. The coupe will directly rival the BMW M2 on Indian soil, although the latter can be acquired at a discount when compared to the former. Underneath, the AMG Ride Control suspension combines steel springs with adaptive damping, adjustable in Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings. Damping rates for rebound and compression are controlled independently, reacting quickly to road and driving conditions. Standard rear-axle steering allows the rear wheels to turn up to 2.5 degrees opposite to the front wheels at speeds under 100 kmph for tighter manoeuvres, or up to 0.7 degrees in the same direction above that speed to aid stability. Power comes from a 3.0-litre M 256M inline six-cylinder petrol engine equipped with twin turbocharging and an electric additional compressor. Modifications such as revised inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, optimised injection, and a larger exhaust gas turbocharger have increased boost pressure to 1.5 bar. Output stands at 449 bhp with 560 Nm of torque, rising to 600 Nm for short bursts using overboost. A second-generation Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) is integrated into the gearbox bell housing. Operating as part of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, it provides 23 bhp and 205 Nm while enabling functions such as regenerative braking, engine-off sailing, and near-instant restarts. The AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission supports fast upshifts and multiple downshifts, with rev-matching on gear changes. It works with the fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, which can continuously adjust torque distribution between the front and rear axles. Official WLTP fuel consumption is between 9.3 and 9.7 litres per 100 km, which translates to 10.3 to 10.7 kmpl. Five AMG Dynamic Select drive modes are available: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. These change throttle response, shift patterns, steering weight, and suspension settings. Manual gear control is possible through steering-mounted paddles using the dedicated M button. The cabin features Artico leather and Microcut microfibre upholstery with AMG-specific graphics and contrast stitching. A 12.3-inch driver display offers multiple layouts, including the AMG Supersport mode, which highlights performance data such as lap times and G-forces. A portrait-style 11.9-inch central touchscreen runs the latest MBUX infotainment interface, controlled via touch, voice commands, or steering wheel buttons. Dynamic ambient lighting with 64 colour choices is standard.

Nifty IT is 2025's worst-performing sector, down 20%; seven index stocks plunge 20–35% from recent peaks

Domestic tech stocks have emerged as the worst performers in 2025 so far, with persistent selling across the board leading to a sharp erosion in value and pushing them to multi-month lows. Lackluster earnings, tariff concerns, and a weak demand outlook have dampened investor sentiment toward the sector, triggering a rapid exodus from these stocks. As a result, the Nifty IT index has crashed 20% year to date. If the pressure on tech stocks persists through the end of the year, it would mark the index's first annual decline since 2022. Moreover, a loss of over 26% in value would make it the steepest yearly drop since 2008. Among its constituents, seven out of ten are in bear market territory, trading more than 20% below their recent peaks. Oracle Financial Services has plunged 35% to ₹ 8,594 from its December peak of ₹ 13,220, while TCS shares have slumped 33.8% from their August highs to ₹ 3,036, erasing over ₹ 5 lakh crore from the company's market capitalization. Other tech majors such as Infosys, HCL Technologies, and Wipro have fallen 29%, 25.5%, and 25.4%, respectively. In fact, 7 out of ten constituents of the index are now down more than 20% from their recent record highs. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) reduced their stakes in nine of the 10 Nifty IT index constituents amid weak demand concerns. In TCS, FII holdings fell to 11.5% from 12% in the March quarter, while Infosys saw a decline to 31.9% from 32.9%. HCL Technologies FIIs shareholding dropped sharply to 18.6% from 19.2%, LTIMindtree fell to 6.6%, Coforge slipped to 37.4% from 40.2%, and MphasiS declined to 19% from 20.6%. Wipro and Oracle Financial Services Software registered marginal drops of 100 basis points each, to 8.2% and 8.6%, respectively, while Persistent Systems FIIs holdings eased to 24.2% from 24.4%. Tech Mahindra was the only exception, with overseas holdings rising slightly to 23.3% from 23%. The demand outlook for India's $283-billion IT sector remains uncertain due to US tariff risks and broader geopolitical factors. Indian tech giants started the year with high hopes for pro-growth policies from the Trump administration. However, a series of tariff-related announcements soon dampened investor sentiment, raising fears that a potential US economic slowdown triggered by trade wars could lead to fewer IT deals. The slowdown in new deals has already fed into companies' performance in the June quarter, with the country's top tech firms posting muted results, reporting a single-digit top-line growth ranging from 0.8% to 8.1%.
