Michael Chandler campaigns for Justin Gaethje UFC lightweight title shot

USA Today12-04-2025
MIAMI – Michael Chandler wants to see Justin Gaethje get the next UFC title shot.
With Gaethje (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC), Ilia Topuria, Arman Tsarukyan, and Charles Oliveira all vying for a shot at UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, Chandler (23-9 MMA, 2-4 UFC) hopes his former rival gets the nod. Chandler lost a Fight of the Year against Gaethje at UFC 268.
Along with Chandler, many fighters and pundits are on board with former interim champ Gaethje getting the opportunity, even though many can argue that his recent run presents the weakest case out of the top contenders. Gaethje was knocked out by Max Holloway at UFC 300, but rebounded with a decision win over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313.
However, Chandler thinks Gaethje risking his ranking by facing former featherweight Holloway should be accounted for.
'If I'm thinking with my heart, I want Gaethje to get a shot,' Chandler told MMA Junkie and other reporters Wednesday at UFC 314 media day. 'Gaethje being the No. 1 guy and putting that No. 1 ranking on the line against Max Holloway for the BMF belt, and then losing that, so then he drops down a notch.
'Charles and I were the No. 1 contender fight, but now you've got Topuria coming up, you got (Dustin) Poirier retiring, you got Islam talking about going up to 170. There's a bunch of rumblings about that in the media and things that he has said. The coolest thing is just being a part of the most interesting division in the world.'
Former Bellator champion Chandler will look to cement himself as a top lightweight when he takes on Paddy Pimblett (22-3 MMA, 6-0 UFC) in Saturday's five-round UFC 314 co-headliner (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at Kaseya Center in Miami.

Michigan State football included in ESPN's preseason bowl projections

One of the two experts at ESPN has the Spartans bowling this season. ESPN has released their preseason bowl projections, and one of the two writers included in the projections has the Spartans reaching the postseason this fall. That would be Mark Schlabach, while Kyle Bonagura has Michigan State failing to reach bowl eligibility for a fourth straight season. Schlabach has Michigan State landing in the nearby GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. His projected matchup for the Spartans is against Ohio out of the Mid-American Conference. Michigan State comes into this season with a win total over/under of 5.5, signifying the Spartans will be right on the fringe of reaching the postseason. The Spartans went 5-7 last season in year one under head coach Jonathan Smith, but expectations have been raised this year with fans expecting a bowl berth from the Spartans. Michigan State opens the 2025 season next week against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium on August 29 is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. How to watch the Tour Championship: TV, weather, format for FedEx Cup finale at East Lake

The playoff gate closed at Caves Valley with a jolt. Scottie Scheffler came back from a four-shot deficit in five holes, then chipped in on the par-3 17th to win the BMW Championship and lock the FedEx Cup No. 1 into Atlanta. The rally doubled as a sorting hat for the final 30, with East Lake now set. Advertisement ESPN+ will have coverage of featured groups and holes. NBC coverage can also be streamed on Peacock. There was no shortage of theater. Robert MacIntyre led after 54 holes before a closing 73 slipped him from contention. Akshay Bhatia delivered the week's headline, a hole-in-one at the 17th that earned him a BMW and the final Tour Championship berth. Tommy Fleetwood's birdie on Sunday rolled in only after a stray fly redirected its path, a moment that drew more laughter than disbelief. Rickie Fowler, despite a tie for seventh, fell just short of Atlanta at 32nd in the standings. This year's Tour Championship arrives with a clean slate. Starting strokes are gone. All 30 players begin at even par, and the lowest 72-hole total wins the FedEx Cup. The Tour formalized the change in May as part of its 'Fan Forward' updates. East Lake is the oldest permanent host in playoff golf, home to Bobby Jones as a boy and to the finale since 2005. Players describe it as exacting but fair, with long-iron approaches into demanding Bermuda greens. Atlanta heat and late-day storms are expected to add their usual layer of suspense. Odds mirror the form sheet. BetMGM lists Scheffler as the clear favorite, followed by Rory McIlroy, then Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Åberg and Russell Henley next, with no one else shorter than +2000 odds. Scheffler is also the defending champion, having won the 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake. The complete list of tee times can be found here.
