Student protests continue at AMU for fifth day
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organisation of various farmer bodies in the country, announced it would extend support to the AMU students, who have been protesting for five days now.
The protesting students are demanding the rollback of a steep fee hike; holding students' union elections, which have not been held in eight years; and the removal of certain senior university officials allegedly responsible for the crisis.
Several opposition MPs have written to Khatoon expressing concern over the reported police crackdown on the protesters on the campus on Friday, when many of them were offering collective prayers at the dharna site.
On Tuesday (August 12), the protesting students marched to the district collectorate here and burned an effigy of Ms. Khatoon.
In a statement, the SKM said it will highlight the students' issues along with those of farmers at a 'Virodh Diwas' protest, which will be held here on Wednesday (August 13) to oppose the privatisation of electricity supply in Uttar Pradesh.
The SKM wants a probe into the alleged police crackdown on the protesting AMU students on the campus on Friday afternoon, Shashikant, a member of the farmer group's national executive, told reporters.

Agra: Four members of the proctorial staff at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) resigned following allegations of misbehaviour with students who have been staging demonstrations on campus against the university's fee hike, an official said on Saturday. AMU vice-chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon has accepted the resignations, the official confirmed. The development comes amid ongoing stir by students against the "steep fee hike and the delay in holding students' union election". While the university administration recently announced a rollback of the fee hike, reduced by up to 20% for continuing students, and assured that the election would be held in due course, most students remain unconvinced. Vibha Sharma, member-in-charge of the university's public relations office, said the university administration has assured compliance with Lyngdoh Committee guidelines for conducting the election at the appropriate time. Student leader Janib Husain, however added, "We want the election date to be announced and an election officer to be appointed, without delay. Our two students, Kaif Hassan and Raiyan, started a hunger strike and will continue till the date of the election is announced." The protests, which began two weeks ago, were triggered by the fee hike. Students have been staging regular sit-ins at the university's Bab-e-Syed gate. During their protest, students alleged the proctorial team of misbehaving with them, and demanded action, leading to the resignation of four proctors. According to an official, those who stepped down were Prof Mohammad Asif (deputy proctor, department of economics), Anwar Ahmad (assistant proctor, department of commerce), Imran Ahmad Usmani (assistant proctor, AMU Girls School), and Syed Ali Nawaz Zaidi (deputy proctor, department of law). Earlier, students claimed that the fee hike -- ranging from 36% to 40% -- was unfair and places a heavy burden on families from diverse backgrounds. An official in AMU said, "In response to fee hike protest, AMU's academic council in a special online meeting on Thursday, unanimously approved recommendations to limit the hike up to 20% for continuing students and implement support measures. Chaired by VC Prof Khatoon, the council examined the report of the panel constituted to review students' concerns. It was clarified that the fee hike for continuing students will not exceed 20% over the previous academic session's rates, and the revision will be rolled out in phases to ease financial burden. Police stops farmers rally in Ongole district
The police personnel stopped 'Quit Corporation – Quit Agriculture' programme, organised by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and United Front of Trade Unions, at Mini Stadium in Ongole on Wednesday. The leaders of both organisations expressed ire over the issue and warned the government that it would face public anger if it tried to suppress protests with force. As per the call given by National Joint Kisan Morcha, the leaders of A.P. Farmers' Association, All India Rythu Coolie Sangham, Kisan Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Congress Party, and various public organisations reached the Mini Stadium on Wednesday morning to hold a rally. On knowing this, police inspectors Y. Nagaraju, M. Srinivasa Rao and M. Venkata Krishna arrived at the place with police personnel and stopped the rally. They announced that prior permission should be obtained to conduct such a rally as Section 30 of the Police Act hss been in force in the district. The SKM leaders urged the police officers to allow them to conduct the rally peacefully, however, the appeal went in vain. The police officials warned that the rally would not be allowed and the protestors arrested if the rules were violated. The SKM leaders strongly condemned the obstruction of the rally and questioned how the programmes being undertaken by the ruling party were allowed when Section 30 was in force in the district. SKM Prakasam district convener Chunduru Ranga Rao called the police personnel's act of blocking the rally a disgrace. 'It is wrong to obstruct agitations on public issues and farmers' issues in a democratic country,' he said. A.P. Rythu Sangam district secretary Pamidi Venkata Rao questioned whether the Centre would waive off the farmers' loans in the State. He alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government had waived off loans worth ₹16 lakh crore to corporates, sold 2 lakh acres of cultivable land in the State at a cheaper price, and allowed tax evasion of lakhs of crores of rupees.
