The police personnel stopped 'Quit Corporation – Quit Agriculture' programme, organised by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and United Front of Trade Unions, at Mini Stadium in Ongole on Wednesday. The leaders of both organisations expressed ire over the issue and warned the government that it would face public anger if it tried to suppress protests with force.
As per the call given by National Joint Kisan Morcha, the leaders of A.P. Farmers' Association, All India Rythu Coolie Sangham, Kisan Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Congress Party, and various public organisations reached the Mini Stadium on Wednesday morning to hold a rally.
On knowing this, police inspectors Y. Nagaraju, M. Srinivasa Rao and M. Venkata Krishna arrived at the place with police personnel and stopped the rally. They announced that prior permission should be obtained to conduct such a rally as Section 30 of the Police Act hss been in force in the district. The SKM leaders urged the police officers to allow them to conduct the rally peacefully, however, the appeal went in vain.
The police officials warned that the rally would not be allowed and the protestors arrested if the rules were violated. The SKM leaders strongly condemned the obstruction of the rally and questioned how the programmes being undertaken by the ruling party were allowed when Section 30 was in force in the district.
SKM Prakasam district convener Chunduru Ranga Rao called the police personnel's act of blocking the rally a disgrace. 'It is wrong to obstruct agitations on public issues and farmers' issues in a democratic country,' he said.
A.P. Rythu Sangam district secretary Pamidi Venkata Rao questioned whether the Centre would waive off the farmers' loans in the State. He alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government had waived off loans worth ₹16 lakh crore to corporates, sold 2 lakh acres of cultivable land in the State at a cheaper price, and allowed tax evasion of lakhs of crores of rupees.

Police obstruct farmers' ‘Quit Corporate' rally

Ongole: Police authorities obstructed a farmers' demonstration organised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and Trade Unions Joint Forum here on Wednesday, citing restrictions under Section 30 of the Police Act. The 'Quit Corporate - Quit Agriculture' rally was intended to protest against the corporatisation of agriculture and demand implementation of the MS Swaminathan Commission recommendations. SKM District convener Chunduri Rangarao led farmers from various organisations, including Andhra Pradesh Raithu Sangham, AP Rythu Sangham, Akhila Bharata Rythu Coolie Sangham, Kisan Congress, CPM, and Congress Party, who arrived at Mini Stadium with tractors, motorcycles, and flags at 10 AM. Following the obstruction by the police, the organisers converted the rally into a protest. Speaking at the event, Rangarao criticised the BJP government for benefiting corporate interests while suppressing democratic rights. He reminded the gathering that they had democratically opposed Chandrababu Naidu's arrest when he was the opposition leader, questioning why the current government was now acting autocratically against democratic voices. Rangarao said that the farmers of the country are now calling for the 'Quit Corporate' against the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi against the farmers, and to present the agriculture in the country to the corporate companies. AP Rythu Sangham district secretary Pamidi Venkatrao questioned why the central government could waive Rs 16 lakh crore in corporate loans but refused to waive farmers' debts. He warned that attempts to suppress movements would lead to the same fate as previous governments. CPM district secretary Sk Mabu alleged the government was implementing agricultural laws through backdoor methods, specifically criticising the allocation of 8348 acres of valuable farmland to Indosol company. Other speakers, including Hanuma Reddy, Chittipati Venkateswarlu, and Sk Saida, condemned the government's double standards, pointing out that ruling party events don't require Section 30 clearance. Other leaders warned that suppressing public concerns through force would inevitably lead to public backlash against the government.

Farmers, Workers Demand Withdrawal of U.S. 50% Tariffs on India

Gadwal: Farmers' and workers' unions under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha staged a protest at the old bus stand in the district headquarters on Wednesday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the 50% tariffs imposed by the United States on India. Speaking at the protest, Farmers' Association State Secretary Gopal Yadav and CITU District President A. Venkataswamy said the steep tariffs would severely damage India's economy, push up prices of goods and services, and worsen unemployment. They stressed that in a largely agrarian country like India, such measures would disproportionately hurt farmers, workers, and agricultural laborers. The leaders reiterated India's sovereign right to make trade agreements with any nation and questioned the U.S.'s authority to interfere in India's ties with Russia. They called on the Indian government to stand firm against 'imperial arrogance' and dictatorial policies aimed at creating a unipolar world, which they said were fueling wars and global economic decline. They pledged the support of farmers and workers for all government measures aimed at safeguarding the nation's economy and foreign policy independence. The protest saw participation from Telangana Praja Front State Treasurer Sankar Prabhakar, District President Naganna, CITU District Vice-President Upper Narasimha, Farmers' Association leaders Nagaraju and Khaja Mainuddin, CITU leader Narasimhraju, and others.
