Valiant but vulnerable - how Rangers escaped heat of Athens with hope

BBC News30-07-2025
When the final whistle blew on a blisteringly hot Athens night where Rangers had at points been both tremendously valiant and desperately vulnerable, Russell Martin's side had ultimately got what they came for. When the draw for the Champions League second round qualifier threw up Panathinaikos, it looked the most hazardous of first steps to the league phase, and Rangers rode their luck from all the way from Glasgow to Greece. And yet while they have some Greek wastefulness and Jack Butland heroics to thank for their passage into the next round, the character demonstrated by a team in the early days of an overhaul by the new head coach was to be admired as they drew 1-1 on the night to progress 3-1 on aggregate.Martin had asked his players to be resilient in the face of the Panathinaikos onslaught, and while other areas of their game would have been concerning, they delivered that in spades."We will get better. The group will grow so much from this," Martin said after the game. That's his challenge now, to add the quality to the foundations of the character his team has shown over these two testing encounters."That's the big thing for me with Russell Martin, is that he thrives on the training ground," former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell said on BBC Sportsound."The longer he has with his players, the better they will get."This Rangers team showed a bit of character. It's all positive at the moment, they just need to keep this momentum going."
'That's how you build a team'
Djeidi Gassama will steal the headlines after his second stunning, and vital, goal in as many games. The hosts had just gone in front on the night as VAR eventually realised Filip Duricic was onside when he headed by Butland. The Rangers dam had finally been burst, and there was still plenty time left in the clock to overhaul Rangers' shrinking aggregate lead. However, Gassama popped up three minutes after coming on and seven minutes after that opener to slash a ferocious shot in off the post to halt the hosts' momentum.Despite his impact, though, few embodied that Rangers team spirit better than John Souttar, who stood tall at the heart of the defence when the Greek side were threatening to tear Rangers apart."That's how you build a team, coming through those tough moments," Souttar told BBC Scotland."It shows our mentality. There are going to be times things don't go our way. We've got [Butland] to thank because he was excellent again."We could have been better on the ball but it's a new team and that's a big win for us."
'Style of play seems like it's not really working'
That failure to look after the ball was a recurring theme across the two legs. Time and again in the first-halves of both legs, Rangers players gave up possession cheaply. They were fortunate not be punished against Panathinaikos, but as they progress through the qualifying rounds and to, they hope, the Champions League league phase, such sloppiness simply has to be ironed out of their game."If Gassama hadn't scored then, I think Rangers could have potentially conceded the game because at that point they were all over the place still and Panathinaikos were still dominant," said former Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands on Sportsound."Rangers don't really have time. The style of play right now, seems like it's not really working right now. That needs to be tidied up before the next round."That next round will see Rangers up against the Czech side Viktoria Plzen. Another tough test, and one in which Martin's side will need to be better."You would anticipate they are probably weaker opponents than Panathinaikos, but if Rangers play like they've played over the two ties, they're going to make it difficult for themselves," said former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday."Rangers are a work in progress and will definitely improve on what they've shown over the two legs."There are a lot of things for them to work on and new faces will help as well."

Cyriel Dessers puts transfer ball back in Rangers court as former coach reveals priceless lesson he taught him

The striker's future remains uncertain after the club received an offer of around £5m from AEK Athens Billy Dodds has warned his old Rangers bosses will be taking a huge risk if they choose to cash in on Cyriel Dessers this summer. ‌ Dessers was a standout performer in his first start of the season on Tuesday night - scoring from the spot after setting up Djeidi Gassama for the opener in a 3-0 first leg win over Viktoria Plzen. ‌ But, with the transfer window open until the end of the month, the striker's future remains uncertain after the club received an offer of around £5m from AEK Athens. ‌ And Dodds - who was part of Barry Ferguson's coaching staff for the final three months of the previous campaign - is adamant that selling Dessers now might cost the club in the long run. He said: 'It would be a gamble now. Rangers were maybe looking to sell him going into the season. But I think the big man has bounced back again and I love players who show that. 'It's like he thinks to himself, 'Get another one in, I'll put him out of the team. Get another one in, I'll see him off too!'. The big man is now saying: 'Right, bring it on. I'll just show you what I can do.' ‌ 'He's scored again and he's probably put it back in Rangers' court. I think probably Rangers did want to sell. But now, there's a question mark about it. 'They could bring in a striker who scores 20 and that's a good return. But it's still not what the big man gets. ‌ 'Yes, he misses chances and he's the first to admit that. But it's just little details. 'I'm not saying I changed him but I did point out to him, 'Any time you take more than three touches - or two touches especially in the box - you miss your chances, big man. You miss them because you overthink it!'. 'He actually looked at me one of the times when he took three touches and he's like, 'Ah, you're right!'. He admits it. ‌ 'I think that's a great trait to have because he knew what could make him better. And when he scored a few of his goals, he came to me, and said: 'one touch, two touches.' 'Honestly, the admiration I've got for him is incredible because I love people who react to a challenge in the face of adversity. 'I loved working with Cyriel. I'm not scared to say it, he's one of my favourites because I love people who want to learn. And he's a sponge.' ‌ And Dodds has backed Nico Raskin to win over new manager Russell Martin despite being axed for Tuesday night's Champions League qualifier on the back of a warning from the boss that some of his key men have to 'drop their egos'. Dodds said: 'Nico's a very good kid. He's got a good heart. The way I would put it is, Nico needs some convincing. But he's great. 'I think we had him playing some of his best football last season because he was adding goals and he realised he's an all-rounder. He wanted to be a No 6. He can play as a No 6 - nobody's arguing with that. That's what we told him. He's decent there. But he's better as an all-rounder. ‌ 'The Belgian manager played him as a No 6 and that was what was in his head. But he's also got to realise that if you score goals as an all-rounder then there's more money in it and bigger moves for him. 'I'm not saying he should leave Rangers but when it comes at the right time, he moves for bigger money. That's what was put to him. ‌ 'And then suddenly he starts scoring goals for that energetic position and then he believes in it, funny enough.' In fact, Dodds believes Martin's side need more big egos if the new boss is to challenge Celtic's domestic superiority. He went on: 'Some players were harder to handle than others. But there's one thing that was missing at Rangers - and it was egos. 'When you have egos, domestically, it looks after itself. I think you go, 'I'm a good player, we win this game consistently.' 'That's what they actually needed more of and I think that's the thing that was missing.' * Billy Dodds was promoting the Premier Sports' live and exclusive coverage of Rangers v Dundee on Saturday from 12pm on Premier Sports 1. Rangers need MORE egos in their team not less says ex Ibrox coach as he reveals what new-look Gers can learn from Celtic

But Billy Dodds reckons that's something they need MORE of in the Ibrox dressing room. He then benched skipper James Tavernier and Nico Raskin for the Champions League qualifier first-leg with Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night. But Doddsy - coach to Barry Ferguson during his caretaker boss stint last season - believes ego is one of the things Martin's squad lacks. He said: 'Do you know what, there were some players harder to handle that others. 'But there's one thing that was missing at Rangers, and it was egos. 'Because I think when you have egos, domestically, it looks after itself. 'I think you go, 'I'm a good player, we win this game consistently.' 'That's what they actually needed. 'I think a lot of them need more ego. 'And yeah, you get different types of egos, different sizes. Awkward moment Rangers boss Russell Martin's BBC interview is abruptly cut short as he admits 'I talk too much' 'You get small egos, you get big egos. 'I think they need more big ego. 'Because that will help them consistently, domestically. 'And I think that's the thing that was missing.' 'Look at Celtic the weekend. 'Celtic weren't at their best against St Mirren but they won the game. 'That's the thing I think, when I was in there, was missing. 'But they are a great group of boys. 'They probably just lacked being that wee bit of determination to win games when they weren't playing well.' Dodds is a huge fan of Tavernier and Raskin and insists they'll battle back into Martin's starting line-up. He added: 'You don't have to tell me how good pros Nico and Tav are. 'I think they'll come back stronger. 5 'Because they'll be dogged and determined to show they want in this team and I want to be part of it. 'They'll be hurting. But that's what good pros do. They hurt and then they show you. 'That's the way it should be. 'It went well for Russell because they won. 'But it was brave, I'll say that. 'When it goes for you it looks like an expert decision. 'With Nico, he's a very good kid. 'He's got a good heart. 'The way I would put it is, 'Nico needs some convincing.' 'But he's great. I think we had him playing some of his best football last season because he was adding goals and he realised he's an all-rounder. 'I've spoken about it before. 'He wanted to be a six. He get it, he can play as a six. 5 Rangers manager Russell Martin Credit: Reuters 'Nobody's arguing with that. That's what we told him. He can play as a six, he's decent there. 'But he's better as an all-rounder. 'The Belgian manager played him as a six and that was what was in his head. 'But he's also got to realise that if you score goals as an all-rounder then there's more money in it and bigger moves for him. 'I'm not saying he should leave Rangers but when it comes in the right time, he moves for bigger money. 'That's what was put to him. 'And then suddenly he starts scoring goals for that energetic position and then he believes in it, funny enough. 'I had that before with Jackson Irvine, exact same.' Rangers were terrific against Plzen to win 3-0 but Dodds insists they must maintain their standards against Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday. He added: 'I think Tuesday night looks after itself. 'When it's Europe it's no bother. 'It was no surprise to me they went and blew Plzen away. 'I don't think Plzen were great, don't get me wrong. 'But you can only beat what's put in front of you. 'Now they've got to handle that it's Dundee, sitting deep. They'll be trying to make it hard for them to get a point on the board themselves. 'And that's the kind of games that Rangers came unstuck last season. 'But I think if they play the way they did last night, with that energy, and they make sure that they're causing Dundee problems by making darting runs, then that'll help Rangers. 5 Nico Raskin full time celebration Credit: Willie Vass 'I think the game, if they play the way they did last night, will look after itself. And that's a good reaction to dropping points against Motherwell.' Doddsy reckons the arrival of £3m Finn Oliver Antman has been huge for Rangers. He added: 'We had Vac Cerny last season and it's no disrespect to Kieran Dowell, but he's a midfielder who was asked to play a winger. 'So that's what you're missing out on. 'That's nothing on Dowell, that's just what was missing. 'Motherwell were great last week, don't get me wrong. 'I thought they played really well and probably deserved to win it. 'But when you miss players like Vaclac, it shows. 'They had it on Tuesday with Antman and it shows what they can do to teams. 'Then it's no surprise that Rangers won the way they did on Tuesday night. And it showed you what was missing against Motherwell 'So those type of players with that explosive pace are so important.' Harry Kane SKIES his penalty against Tottenham after scoring the opener in Bayern Munich's pre-season clash against his former club

Harry Kane scored the opener for Bayern Munich against Tottenham before missing a penalty in an eventful start to his pre-season clash against his former club. The England skipper, who completed a £100m transfer from Bavaria from North London in 2023, did not celebrate after slotting the ball past Guglielmo Vicario in the 12th minute at the Allianz Arena. Kane would have been expecting another awkward moment against the side his netted 279 goals for in 428 appearances, but he instead saw his 15th-minute penalty sail high over the crossbar after losing his footing when taking the strike.
