Potential record-breaking heat on the way to western Montana

Potentially dangerous and possibly record-breaking warm weather is headed to western Montana this weekend.
On Thursday, the National Weather Service Office in Missoula issued a heat advisory from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday. Temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s are expected for a wide swath of western Montana stretching from the Canadian border down through the Flathead, Missoula and Bitterroot valleys.
NWS Meteorologist Jennifer Kitzmiller, based in Missoula, said seeing temperatures in the 90s this early in the year was atypical. Anaconda, Eureka, Libby and Phillipsburg are some of the places that could approach their daily high record mark, if not break it.
'We're looking at setting records for daily high temperatures tomorrow and a lot of places in western Montana,' Kitzmiller said. 'And previous records date back to 1986 … we haven't seen temperatures this warm, this time of year, for like 40 years.'
The heat is being driven by a strong ridge of high pressure in the West, according to a NWS national report. Temperatures are expected to dip back down on Sunday.
'It's not going to be hugely different, but it'll cool us back down,' Kitzmiller said.
The weather service also issued some recommendations, including drinking plenty of water and staying out of direct sunlight.
Warm weather also draws people to bodies of water, especially on a weekend, which can add a degree of danger. May 24 was particularly deadly as a woman drowned near Missoula near Maclay Bridge and a kayaker died near Craig. Additionally, a 68-year old Missoula man last seen on Wednesday is presumed to have drowned near the Lochsa River in Idaho.
Lifevests should always be worn when on or in the water, and a close eye should be kept on children. Additionally, alcohol can enhance hypothermia, and cold water can make even experienced swimmers lose muscle control.
'The rivers and streams are still running fast and cold,' Kitzmiller said. 'And there's that extra threat, despite the warm temperatures, for hypothermia.'

Dozens of Palestinians were killed Sunday when going to a Gaza aid hub, officials and witnesses said, according to The Associated Press. Crowds were fired upon by Israeli forces close to 1,000 yards from an Israeli-supported aid foundation's site, witnesses said, the AP reported. Thirty-one people died and 170 were injured, the Gaza Health Ministry said, according to the outlet. Israel's army said in a statement it was 'currently unaware of injuries caused by (Israeli military) fire within the Humanitarian Aid distribution site,' according to the AP. A statement from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation pushed back on stories of disorder and gunfire near its sites and said that aid was provided by the foundation 'without incident,' the outlet reported. Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip since the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, attack on the country has caused the mass destruction of infrastructure in the territory, as well as widespread death and injury among the residents of Gaza. The dire situation faced by Gaza's residents has resulted in international pressure on Israel over its treatment of those living in the territory, with figures like the newly-minted Pope Leo XIV calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron saying in a recent statement that they were 'strongly' against 'the expansion of Israel's military operations in Gaza.' Summer-like weather returns to area with temps reaching mid 80s
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — After a cool start Sunday morning, temperatures will warm into the low to mid 70's Sunday afternoon. While we will have plenty of sunshine, so haze maybe noticed in the sky. The haze in the sky is from the Canadian wildfires, however it is not expected to have a major impact on air quality (most of the smoke is high up in the atmosphere). Our dry trend continues into the new work week, bringing summer-like weather early into June. Temperatures will climb into the low 80s and mid 80s by Wednesday. We will see a chance of storms late Wednesday, with most of the activity coming overnight as a slow moving cold front approach the area. Thursday is the best chance to see rain this week, as that front stays stalled.
