Potential record-breaking heat on the way to western Montana
Potentially dangerous and possibly record-breaking warm weather is headed to western Montana this weekend.
On Thursday, the National Weather Service Office in Missoula issued a heat advisory from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday. Temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s are expected for a wide swath of western Montana stretching from the Canadian border down through the Flathead, Missoula and Bitterroot valleys.
NWS Meteorologist Jennifer Kitzmiller, based in Missoula, said seeing temperatures in the 90s this early in the year was atypical. Anaconda, Eureka, Libby and Phillipsburg are some of the places that could approach their daily high record mark, if not break it.
'We're looking at setting records for daily high temperatures tomorrow and a lot of places in western Montana,' Kitzmiller said. 'And previous records date back to 1986 … we haven't seen temperatures this warm, this time of year, for like 40 years.'
The heat is being driven by a strong ridge of high pressure in the West, according to a NWS national report. Temperatures are expected to dip back down on Sunday.
'It's not going to be hugely different, but it'll cool us back down,' Kitzmiller said.
The weather service also issued some recommendations, including drinking plenty of water and staying out of direct sunlight.
Warm weather also draws people to bodies of water, especially on a weekend, which can add a degree of danger. May 24 was particularly deadly as a woman drowned near Missoula near Maclay Bridge and a kayaker died near Craig. Additionally, a 68-year old Missoula man last seen on Wednesday is presumed to have drowned near the Lochsa River in Idaho.
Lifevests should always be worn when on or in the water, and a close eye should be kept on children. Additionally, alcohol can enhance hypothermia, and cold water can make even experienced swimmers lose muscle control.
'The rivers and streams are still running fast and cold,' Kitzmiller said. 'And there's that extra threat, despite the warm temperatures, for hypothermia.'

The region had a population of more than 7.8 million in 2020. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) said in the NWS alert: "Atmospheric conditions are expected to be favorable for producing high levels of ozone air pollution in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Wednesday. "You can help prevent ozone pollution by sharing a ride, walking, riding a bicycle, taking your lunch to work, avoiding drive-thru lanes, conserving energy, and keeping your vehicle properly tuned." In Minnesota, an air quality alert for fine particle pollution has been issued for the northeast until 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Air quality is forecast to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range. In Washington, an air quality alert has been issued for Mason County, west of Seattle, until 9 a.m. on Friday due to smoke from the Bear Gulch Fire, which has been burning since July 6. In Colorado, an air quality health advisory for wildfire smoke has been issued in select areas until 9 a.m. in response to wildfires such as the Lee and Elk fires, which between them have burned close to 150,000 acres. The Lee fire, which had blazed through 130,000 acres alone by Monday morning, was sparked by lightning on August 2 and became the fifth largest in state history. Around 1,000 firefighters are battling the huge inferno—which was only 7 percent contained at the start of the week—amid gusty winds and dry conditions. Meanwhile in Connecticut, an Air Quality Action Day has been issued for western counties until 11 p.m., covering the city of Hartford. The warning means that ground level ozone levels may approach or exceed unhealthy levels. What People Are Saying The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said in the NWS alert: "Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Reduce vehicle trips and vehicle idling as much as possible. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors." The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said: "If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and older adults. "Consider limiting outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present. Consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and is making you ill. If visibility is less than five miles in smoke in your neighborhood, smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy." With two hurricanes in a week, New England was paralyzed in August 1955. Erin could take a similar route.
Hurricane Connie made landfall on Aug. 12, 1955, as a Category 2 hurricane, pushing north through the Mid-Atlantic and eventually breaking and dissolving over the Great Lakes. Advertisement New England was stuck on the eastern side of the storm, where moisture continued to spawn repeat bands of heavy rain that produced bursts of downpours, even though the strongest winds were concentrated to the southwest. A swath of 4 to 6 inches of rain fell across the region, with locally higher amounts of 7 to 10 inches across Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. There were only a handful of flooding events from Connie because the ground was able to absorb and retain most of the water. Rainfall across New England from Connie concentrated across the Southwest. NWS About five days later, Hurricane Diane followed in Connie's wake, making landfall on Aug. 17 about 150 miles south of where Connie approached the Carolina shore, this time as a Category 1 storm. Advertisement Instead of taking a turn toward the Great Lakes, Diane decided to turn to the northeast, placing the center of the storm over Long Island Sound and Nantucket. This track brought the most intense rainfall over Southern New England. Combined with the already saturated soil and river levels riding high from Connie, Hurricane Diane hammered the region with over 20 inches of rain within two days in some areas. Numerous rivers overflowed, and significant flooding and dam breaks stretched across parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Over 200 dams in New England suffered partial or total failure, dozens of people were killed across New England, while the flooding led to what would become the first billion-dollar natural disaster on record for the country. NWS How Tropical Storm Erin compares to Connie and Diane Most tropical meteorologists compare existing conditions with what unfolded in years past, with similar environmental and climatological factors in place — all to help fine-tune forecasting outside of what the models spit out. This is by no means a forecast, but I have to say that there are a few striking comparisons that have made me think a little harder about what's First, Erin is developing in a similar geographic spot. Only about 40 tropical systems have formed within the same zone since records began in 1851; of those storms, only five have made landfall. Diane and Connie were among those five. All of the others curved north, away from land and out of harm's way. Second, Connie and Diane had hot sea-surface temperatures to thrive on, and heat reached deep into the ocean, as well. Typically, a hurricane draws enough heat out of an ocean to cool down the waters a bit in its wake. Diane was able to thrive with deeper ocean heat present at the time. Similarly, Erin will be traversing across high sea-surface temperatures running about 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above average. Advertisement Both Connie and Diane went through bouts of rapid intensification, and Erin will likely as well. Sea surface temperatures are running nearly 2 degrees Celsius above average. NOAA Lastly, two high-pressure ridges — the Bermuda High over the Northern Atlantic and another over the eastern half of the US and Canada — were in place during Connie and Diane. Both hurricanes rode along the edges of the two, ultimately with the Bermuda High being the stronger and influencing the track toward landfall. As of now, models are suggesting the opposite may occur with Erin, with a stronger ridge present over the country, bumping the storm out to sea. Disaster declared in Alaska's capital due to ‘catastrophic flooding' threat from glacial lake outburst
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration Sunday in response to an 'imminent threat of catastrophic flooding' from a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) linked to a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier. That declaration comes after a joint local disaster declaration by the City and Borough of Juneau, and the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Advertisement The declarations were made in anticipation of a potentially imminent and record GLOF from Suicide Basin, which sits above the Mendenhall Glacier. 'Hydrologic monitoring by the National Weather Service (NWS) and US Geological Survey (USGS) confirms that the volume of water currently impounded in Suicide Basin has reached or exceeded levels observed during prior flood-of-record events,' officials said in a statement. 'A release is expected at any time. Flooding is likely to affect the Mendenhall River and surrounding neighborhoods in the Mendenhall Valley.' Officials said that this year's conditions follow two consecutive years of severe flooding. The August 2024 GLOF caused widespread damage to homes, public infrastructure and utilities, resulting in a state and federal disaster declaration. AP City officials said that following the overtop notification from the NWS, an alert was sent out to all cell phones in the Juneau area via the Wireless Emergency Alert and Emergency Alert Systems. A second alert will be sent when the basin begins to release. According to the USGS, glacial lakes form in small side valleys that have lost ice and then become dammed by the glacier in the main valley or dammed by rocks and debris. Advertisement Over time, as the ice-free basins fill with water, the USGS said, lakes reach a breaking point where water pressure opens up a drain underneath the glacier that releases the water downstream, which can result in a GLOF. 'These events are unpredictable and have caused significant loss of life and infrastructure worldwide,' the USGS said. 'Furthermore, it is unclear how these lake hazards may change as temperatures rise and glaciers continue to melt.'
