Next Volkswagen T-Roc to launch at Munich
Amidst a new model blitz that sees VW launching 10 models in three years, the popular compact crossover that sits between the Golf and Tiguan has come in for renewal.
Images of test mules suggest the new model will retain much of the old car's fundamental design language. However, it will have many new features and more efficient powertrains.
Expect the new model to have a similar silhouette to the outgoing generation. There are also the same round wheelarches, high bonnet and good ground clearance.
The fascia features a wide-mouthed opening as on Tiguan and Tayron. A slim pair of LED headlights connects by a thin strip while the rear has a lightbar. The new model continues with the sloping roofline and raked rear window.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer said the interior update was more comprehensive.
It's the same under the hood. The latest T-Roc will feature fresh hybrid-petrol powertrains that will join the existing mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options currently available.
The full hybrid set-up allows for some pure-electric driving, mostly around town at lower speeds. The two power sources can also act together to optimise fuel efficiency. And no plug is needed for charging. The proven 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine making up to 110kW will likely be the basis of the full hybrid.
While VW is planning to go full electric in less than 10 years, the CEO said they needed self-charging hybrids for other markets.
'We're experimenting [with full-hybrid tech] now because certain regions like North America are gliding into HEV. For a while the US wasn't but with the BEV slowdown in the US, the balance is moving towards HEV.' This tech will find its way into Golf and Tiguan eventually as well.
The T-Roc utilises the MQB Evo platform that underpins the last ICE-powered Mk8.5 Golf.
As yet there's no word on whether or not an R variant is in the pipeline. But we do know the new T-Roc will be the last all-new model VW launches with internal-combustion power.

Tindaya previews new Cupra design language
The new Cupra Tindaya concept car goes on show in Munich soon, and previews the next stage of the brand's design language. Named after a volcanic mountain on the Canary Islands, the tag was chosen because of the copper-toned rock that echoes the signature of Cupra. Tindaya means 'big mountain' in the local dialect. More than anything, the concept car's focus will not be on the silhouette but rather the fresh interior design. Cupra says the concept 'delivers the maximum expression of driver focus'. The cabin design reminds of that of the DarkRebel concept unveiled in 2023. There's a yoke-like wheel, chunky central spine like Tavascan's, and what seem to be racing seats. Cupra says the concept will blend 'human and machine, where the driving experience and emotions reach their fullest expression'. Evidently the concept will also hint at the next step of its exterior design language. The concept follows a significant range-wide redesign recently, focusing mainly on the fascia of each model. At the Munich show, Tindaya will sit alongside a camouflaged production version of the new Raval, VW's ID 2 twin. The Raval will arrive next year as a rival to the Renault 5 for similar money. Where Tindaya fits in the line-up is unclear but it could represent the flagship SUV the firm promised, aimed at the US market. It is likely to be the first Cupra to use the VW Group's SSP platform. This can support single or dual-motor powertrains and battery capacities over 100kWh.

New MG2 may set the price bar for small urban EVs
The new MG2 that we previewed may turn out to be the lowest cost EV yet. It is set to debut next year, utilising the same platform as the new MG4. While MG is going premium with its IM models in some markets, it hasn't forsaken the mass market. The new all-electric MG2 may be amongst the first of the pure electrics to sell in the UK for £20,000. Many have spoken of this goal but fallen short. Renault's R5 just missed but is selling well regardless. Evidently the baby MG is 12 months away yet but there is plenty of upcoming competition in this area, a kind of race to the bottom. VW is deadset on being one of the players with its ID.1. Others include Renault with its new Twingo, Citroen with its e-C3 and BYD Seagull. For a year now MG has been hinting at an electric model that will sit alongside the MG3 (below). Makers of inexpensive EVs are aiming for something four metres in length, and costing 20,000 Euros. 'If anyone's going to do that, we should be right there', said David Allison, MG's Head of Product and Planning. 'It's a combination of range, size and price – and if you hit all those three, you'll nail it.' Evidently the MG2 project is well advanced, though it has yet to be seen testing on the road. Allison said it has the look that will make it fly off the shelves, but then he would say that. An upcoming small SUV will share the same design language as new MG4. The MG4's 'Modular Scalable Platform' was always designed to underpin small cars as well as mediums. Battery size is unclear at present but the 51kWh or 64kWh LFP packs might get a look in. Both would eclipse the 44kWh pack offered in the C3, which has up to 320km of range. So the MG2 should manage 400km minimum per charge. In-car tech will be like MG3's, with a small digital instrument cluster and a larger 10.25-inch infotainment display. Expect the basic MG Pilot components too, including cruise control, active emergency braking and lane-change assist.
