UPMRC officials welcomed the initial 10 passengers at underground stations with flowers and sweets, while launching pink e-rickshaw and e-auto services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the Metro extension from CSA ground at 3.21 pm on Friday, incorporating five new underground stations—Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central—complementing the existing IIT to Moti Jheel route.
The PM noted Kanpur's previous traffic challenges and initial scepticism about the Metro project. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted how the Metro enhanced the industrial city's identity and transport infrastructure.
The Prime Minister had launched the priority corridor between IIT and Moti Jheel on December 28, 2021.
"We are thankful to the people of Kanpur for their ongoing support and cooperation during the construction.
This world-class, pollution-free public transport service will ease traffic congestion," said managing director of UPMRC Sushil Kumar.
The underground stations offer contemporary facilities, including escalators, lifts, and security systems. The service runs daily from 6 am to 10 pm. Trains include designated spaces for elderly and differently-abled passengers. Stations feature AFC gates and CCTV monitoring.

UPMRC has established feeder services with local transport authorities for last-mile connectivity. Pink e-rickshaws provide environment-friendly transport from stations to surrounding areas.
Underground stations display artistic representations of Kanpur's heritage and industrial history. The facilities incorporate energy-efficient features with LED lighting and solar panels. The stations prioritise passenger comfort with air-conditioning and adequate platform space.
A dedicated app provides live updates and digital ticketing. Safety features include platform screen doors at underground stations. Emergency teams are positioned along the route. Trains incorporate advanced communication and protection systems.
The project reduces carbon emissions as residents choose Metro travel over private transport. The corridor features improved pavements and street lighting.
UPMRC anticipates growing daily ridership as commuters embrace the system. Future developments include network expansion across Kanpur, establishing a comprehensive transit network.
