The real reason behind the DeepSeek hype, according to AI experts

CNN —
DeepSeek turned the tech world on its head last month – and for good reason, according to artificial intelligence experts, who say we're likely only seeing the beginning of the Chinese tech startup's influence on the AI field.
DeepSeek grabbed headlines in late January with its R1 AI model, which the company says can roughly match the performance of Open AI's o1 model at a fraction of the cost. Tech stocks tumbled as DeepSeek briefly unseated ChatGPT to become the top app in Apple's App Store.
The achievement pushed US tech behemoths to question America's standing in the AI race against China – and the billions of dollars behind those efforts. While Vice President JD Vance didn't mention DeepSeek or China by name in his remarks at the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris on Tuesday, he certainly emphasized how big of a priority it is for the United States to lead the sector.
'The United States of America is the leader in AI, and our administration plans to keep it that way,' he said, although he added that 'America wants to partner' with other countries.
But it's not just DeepSeek's efficiency and power. The way DeepSeek R1 can reason and 'think' through answers to provide quality results, along with the company's decision to make key parts of its technology publicly available, will also push the field forward, experts say.
While AI has long been used in tech products, it's reached a flashpoint over the last two years thanks to the rise of ChatGPT and other generative AI services that have reshaped the way people work, communicate and find information. It's made Wall Street darlings out of companies like chipmaker Nvidia and upended the trajectory of Silicon Valley giants. So any development that can help build more capable and efficient models is sure to be closely watched.
'This is definitely not hype,' said Oren Etzioni, former CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. 'But also, this is a very fast-moving world.'
AI's TikTok moment
Tech leaders have been quick to respond to DeepSeek's rise. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis called the hype around DeepSeek 'exaggerated , ' but also said its model as 'probably the best work I've seen come out of China,' according to CNBC.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the company's quarterly earnings call in January that DeepSeek has some 'real innovations,' while Apple CEO Tim Cook said on the iPhone maker's earnings call that 'innovation that drives efficiency is a good thing.'
But the attention hasn't all been positive. Semiconductor researcher SemiAnalysis cast doubt over DeepSeek's claims that it only cost $5.6 million to train. OpenAI told The Financial Times it found evidence that DeepSeek used the US company's models to train its own competitor.
'We are aware of and reviewing indications that DeepSeek may have inappropriately distilled our models, and will share information as we know more,' an OpenAI spokesperson said in a comment to CNN. DeepSeek could not immediately be reached for comment.
And a pair of US lawmakers has already called for the app to be banned from government devices after security researchers highlighted its potential links to the Chinese government, as the Associated Press and ABC News reported. Similar concerns have been raised about the popular social media app TikTok, which must be sold to an American owner or risk being banned in the US.
'DeepSeek is the TikTok of (large language models),' Etzioni said.
DeepSeek's deep impression on the tech world
Tech giants are already thinking about how DeepSeek's technology can influence their products and services.
'What DeepSeek gave us was essentially the recipe in the form of a tech report, but they didn't give us the extra missing parts,' said Lewis Tunstall, a senior research scientist at Hugging Face, an AI platform that offers tools for developers.
Tunstall is leading an effort at Hugging Face to fully open source DeepSeek's R1 model; while DeepSeek provided a research paper and the model's parameters, it didn't reveal the code or training data.
Nadella said on Microsoft's earnings call that Windows Copilot+ PCs, or PCs built to a certain spec to support AI models, will be able to run AI models distilled from DeepSeek R1 locally. Mobile chipmaker Qualcomm said on Tuesday that models distilled from DeepSeek R1 were running on smartphones and PCs powered by its chips within a week.
AI researchers, academics and developers are still exploring what DeepSeek means for the advancement of AI.
DeepSeek's model isn't the only open-source one, nor is it the first to be able to reason over answers before responding; OpenAI's o1 model from last year can do that, too.
What makes DeepSeek significant is the way it can reason and learn from other models, along with the fact that the AI community can see what's happening behind the scenes. Those who use the R1 model in DeepSeek's app can also see its 'thought' process as it answers questions.
'You can see the wheels turning inside the machine,' Durga Malladi, senior vice president and general manager for technology planning and edge solutions at Qualcomm, said to CNN.
Tunstall thinks we may see a wave of new models that can reason like DeepSeek in the not-too-distant future. That could be critical as tech giants race to build AI agents, which Silicon Valley generally believes are the next evolution of the chatbot and how consumers will interact with devices – although that shift hasn't quite happened yet.
Grok 3, the next iteration of the chatbot on the social media platform X, will have 'very powerful reasoning capabilities,' its owner, Elon Musk, said on Thursday in a video appearance during the World Governments Summit.
For now, the AI community will keep tinkering with what DeepSeek has to offer. That is, until the next breakthrough comes along.
'I certainly predict that in the next 12 months, it'll be supplanted by something else,' said Etzioni. 'But it's a very real advance.'

Iranian official says US nuclear proposal is ‘incoherent and disjointed,' as sources warn talks momentum is collapsing

CNN — A senior Iranian official told CNN the new nuclear deal proposal presented to Tehran in recent days is 'incoherent and disjointed,' as sources familiar with the progress of the talks said the momentum behind negotiations to secure a new deal appears to be collapsing. The private pessimism contrasts with President Donald Trump's public optimism last week that the administration was 'very close to a solution.' CNN has also learned that the US has shifted position on the issue of uranium enrichment in the new proposal, in comparison to what officials had said publicly. It suggests the US could invest in Iran's civilian nuclear power program and join a consortium that would oversee the enrichment of low-level uranium inside of Iran for an unspecified amount of time. That consortium is expected to include Middle Eastern nations and the UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency. Previously, senior US officials have said no enrichment inside Iran could take place under a new deal, and top US officials demanded that Iran stop enrichment and only import the material – a suggestion Tehran firmly rejected. The prospect of allowing continued low-level enrichment in the country would likely enrage Iran hawks in the US and Israel and hearkens back to the 2015 nuclear deal, from which Trump withdrew. However later Monday, Trump said that the Iran deal will not allow uranium enrichment. 'Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM,' the president wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. Iranian officials have repeatedly said that they are open to the idea of an enrichment consortium but have insisted Iran must be able to keep control of its own enrichment capabilities. The senior Iranian official on Monday denounced the new proposal, saying that at 'at first glance, is assessed as incoherent and disjointed, very unrealistic, and with excessive demands.' They argued that the primary barrier to progress was the US' inconsistency. 'The fact that the Americans constantly change their positions has so far been the main obstacle to the success of the talks and now makes the work more difficult than ever,' the official added. The official also alleged the latest text directly contradicts prior understandings. 'The text is clearly in conflict with the latest agreement reached during the fifth round of negotiations,' the official stated. They reaffirmed Tehran's uncompromising stance on a critical issue, saying, 'Iran's position on enrichment is firm and steadfast.' Iran and the United States concluded a fifth round of high-stakes nuclear talks in Rome on May 23 amid growing skepticism in Tehran about the chances of a deal. After that round of talks, the two sides 'agreed to meet again in the near future,' a US senior administration official said at the time. Now, however, the next round of talks is very uncertain and may not happen at all, the sources familiar said. This story has been updated with additional information. CNN's Samantha Waldenberg contributed to this report.

China accuses US of ‘seriously violating' trade truce, vows countermeasures

China said on Monday the United States is 'seriously violating' a trade truce between the two countries, days after a similar accusation was levelled at Beijing by US President Donald Trump, signalling renewed tension between the economic powers, the Financial Times reported. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated on Monday that Washington is 'seriously violating' the truce and pledged to 'take strict measures to defend its interests.' The ministry added that the United States has imposed 'a series of discriminatory and restrictive measures in recent weeks, which undermined the trade agreement signed in Geneva, and harmed China's legitimate rights and interests.' In the statement, the ministry threatened to continue 'taking strong and firm measures' to protect 'China's legitimate rights' if the United States insists on 'going its own way, and harming Chinese interests.' 'The United States has unilaterally provoked new trade frictions (…) and instead of reflecting on its actions, has made baseless accusations against us of violating the agreement,' the ministry continued. Among the US measures cited in the statement were warnings against the global use of Huawei Technologies' chips, a halt on sales of chip design software to Chinese companies, and the cancellation of visas for Chinese students. China and the United States had agreed during talks in Geneva in early May to an accord that would temporarily reduce mutual tariffs, which had reportedly risen as high as 145%. Trump: China Violated the Agreement Earlier on Friday, US President Donald Trump said China had 'completely violated' the agreement, as US officials have grown increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of rare earth metal exports across the Pacific since the 12 May agreement. Trump told reporters he hoped to resolve the dispute via a telephone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, an idea he has proposed several times in recent months but which has not yet materialised. US officials had believed the 12 May agreement, which stemmed from the early May talks in Geneva, would ease Chinese export restrictions on rare earths that were revealed in early April. However, China has maintained its export system while slowly approving shipments to the United States, according to reports. These vital metals are widely used in US automotive, electronics, and defence supply chains, and the slow pace of exports to the United States poses an increasing threat of work stoppages in the US manufacturing sector. Under the agreement between China and the United States, both sides suspended most tariffs, a move welcomed by investors and businesses worldwide. However, since the Geneva accord, Beijing has continued its slow process for approving export licences for rare earths and other elements necessary for manufacturing cars and chips, among other items. Earlier this week, the US administration took steps to cancel entry visas for Chinese students and also suspended the sale of some vital technologies to Chinese companies. Subsequently, China urged the United States to end 'discriminatory restrictions' against it, calling for cooperation in maintaining the 'consensus' reached during the high-level talks in Geneva.
