Race Across the World stars reveal big changes to their lives after filming

Yahooa day ago

Race Across the World has a huge impact on the lives of the contestants taking part.
It's a life-changing 14,000km journey like no other, this year taking place across China, Nepal and India where the participants must race on a budget without their smart phones or credit cards. Often it sparks a desire for change among those competing.
Many of the contestants are spurred onto continue travelling following the unique experience. Others have been inspired to make life changes, like moving out. Additionally, it has seen the stars enjoy a bit of overnight fame too.
With millions tuning into watch Race Across the World, the contestants have been propelled to stardom overnight where people recognise them in the streets.
Brothers Brian and Melvyn revealed they were recognised while meeting up a few weeks ago at a hotel in Doncaster and the restaurant manager had a selfie with them.
"He seemed, for want of a better phrase, starstruck," Melvyn told Yahoo UK. "Didn't he?!"
Brian added: "He was just a happy chap that he met me!"
Melvyn said: "It really made his day. It was great."
Brian joked: "We should have got a beer off him though! If anybody sees us and quite happy to buy us a cup of tea or a beer, we'd be quite happy!"
Yin decided to moved out of her former husband Gaz's house. Although she returned to his home when they were eliminated, months later she decided to make the move into her own place again. Yin had been living with Gaz while grieving the sudden death of her ex partner Chris.
She told Yahoo UK: "So when we got back from all our travels, and I did go back to Gaz's house, Gaz did say to me, 'Oh, you're gonna come back to mine, or are you finally gonna move into your own house? It's past six months sort of thing'. I said, 'Oh, I don't think I'm ready yet'.
"But then when we got to his house, when I was staying with Gaz, I'd be sleeping on the sofa or sleeping in the spare room when my daughter wasn't there. I had been given the cupboard under the stairs to keep my bits and pieces, day to day pieces.

"I got my rucksack, went to put it into the cupboard under the stairs, and I just thought: 'I'm a 55 year old woman living out of someone's cupboard under the stairs, come on Yin!'
"[Moving out has] taken a little bit longer than I thought, so I took a little bit of time. I said, 'I'm gonna start moving out' and I think probably from the beginning of the end of January, beginning of February.
"I'm in my own house now. I'm talking to you from my own house. I have lived here since about the beginning of March. Gaz was amazing. He always is. Every time I went back to his I found another bag of my stuff!"
After filming for the race was over, some of the contestants headed straight back on a plane out of the UK.
Sioned and Fin wasted no time before going to Australia. Fin told Yahoo UK: "As soon as we came back we went straight to Australia. It was lovely. Thankfully no budget for that because that was an expensive one — home straight away if there's a budget for that."
The teenager lovers have plans to go to South America, including Brazil, Peru, Patagonia. They would also love to go back to Nepal where only a small part of the race was filmed.
Like Fin and Sioned, sisters Elizabeth and Letitia went travelling together straight away but they went to Kenya. "Straight after [Race] we actually went to Kenya," Elizabeth told Yahoo UK. "We really wanted to spend time with family and things, but also just trying to connect more. Our parents are from Kenya. It was a nice way to reconnect, have a family reunion."
Letitia added: "And honestly after the race, after the stress, we needed that relaxation! We needed a holiday to unwind and relax. I don't think the adventures will stop now. Definitely trying other things with travelling, got the travel bug!"
Caroline and Tom have plans to do a mini Race Across the World-style holiday in Kazakhstan with only their rucksacks.
The mum told Yahoo UK: "I'm amazed that Thomas and I immediately wanted to go out travelling again. Kazakhstan with rucksacks! But obviously we'll take a phone. I have never, before raced, I have never travelled with a rucksack in my life. I'd never even worn one.
"And now I actually want to go with just everything I can carry on my back and be a little more spontaneous and rely on speaking to strangers as we've learned. And yeah, go with the best travel companion who's as daft as I am!"
Brian and Melvyn are also considering going fishing again. They had always dreamed about fishing in Canada and staying in a log cabin, so perhaps that will be on the cards for the brothers.
Race Across the World continues at 9pm on BBC One on Wednesday.

Beach Boys ride crest of teen craze

Brace yourself for a shock! The average teenage girl in the U.S. spends between $8 and $10 a month for rock 'n' roll records. Kids buy 80% of single records, 40% of albums sold each year. They accounted for an astounding $250 million of the $580 million spent for platters in 1964. The highly publicized Beatles are, of course, top sellers in this market. Second place goes to a West Coast (Hawthorne, Calif.) group called the Beach Boys, who don't even have a press agent. Nevertheless these lads have sold in excess of 10 million singles and albums. Both organizations record for and are considered the 'backbone' of Capitol. Just who are the Beach Boys? Don't ask the teenagers around your domicile or you'll rate a contemptuous look. It would be like inquiring of the average adult, 'Who's Bing Crosby, Perry Como or Frank Sinatra?' The Beach Boys consist of three Wilson brothers—Brian, 23; Dennis, 21; Carl, 19—a cousin, Mike Love, 24; and a neighbor, Alan Jardine, 22. These lads got together about four years ago and with brother Brian elected boss-man decided to create a new concept in rock 'n' roll music based on the 'social life' of teeners. Musically awkward at the start, the five soon coordinated their strumming, thumping and wailing into harmonies with a hot rock beat. Then one day Dennis, Hawthorne's camp 'surf fiend' came home from the beach with an idea—a tune themed on the new surfing craze. He mulled it over with Brian, and the latter wrote 'Surfin'.' The rookie artists waxed it at an obscure recording studio at their own expense. And sold it. They were on their way to fame and fortune. Leader Brian, rugged looking, intellectually inquisitive and mildly eccentric, admitted their rise to popular stardom was simple and uncomplicated. 'There is little to tell about our long, bitter struggle for success, which never happened that way,' he declared. 'Expanded rock 'n' roll music is generally divided into 'sound' classifications,' he explained during an interview at Capitol Records. 'There's the English sound, which is still pretty much early r 'n'r—they got it late; the Detroit sounds, which is rhythm and blues; and the Spector sound, which results from extensive use of background instruments not usually associated with rock 'n' roll, such as oboe, harp, violins, horns etc. 'Then there's our West Coast sound, which we pioneered and which has put us at the top in record sales. Our songs (he writes most of them) tell stories about teeners; what they do and what their feelings are. We base them on activities of healthy California kids, who like to surf, hot rod and engage in other outdoor fun. It seems to be working out fine.' Brian foresees a long continuance of this type of music. 'We catch the kids young,' he said. 'About 12, I'd say. Their social life is associated with their music, and as they grow older it has become part and parcel of their frame of mind. 'Naturally older teeners and those in their early 20s turn to a more discreet type of rock 'n' roil. They lose some of the rebelliousness of youth. But the beat has become so ingrained in their lives that they'll never forsake it altogether. At least, that's what we believe.' The Beach Boys, who will star in a big rock 'n' roll show Saturday at the Hollywood Bowl, own quite a collection of gold records, awarded for platter sales of a million or more. Their latest single, 'Help Me Rhonda,' which was taken from a new album, has ridden the top of the charts for weeks. Sales have exceeded 750,000. The album, called 'Beach Boys Today,' is over 340,000 in eight weeks. Personal appearances keep the Beach Boys occupied between recording sessions, and have proved lucrative. They receive as much as $20,000 guaranteed for one-night stands, plus a percentage of profits. 'Eventually we'll cut these road trips down to a bare minimum,' Brian said. 'But they're certainly paying off right now. We're looking for a good movie.'

King Charles' birthday isn't until November. So why is it being celebrated in June?

Trooping the Colour 2025 will take place in London on Saturday. The annual military parade serves as King Charles III's official birthday celebration. The royal family gathers on the balcony of Buckingham Palace as part of the event. King Charles III was born on November 14, 1948, which means two things: He is among the most famous Scorpios in the world, and you probably wouldn't expect him to be thinking about his birthday in June. But thousands will celebrate the king's birthday in the UK on Saturday at Trooping the Colour, one of the biggest royal events of the year. According to the royal family's website, Trooping the Colour, a massive parade that takes place in June, has been the British sovereign's official birthday celebration for over 260 years. The annual celebration occurs in June, regardless of when the reigning monarch's actual birthday is. The royal family's website says that June is the ideal time to host the parade because the chance of the weather being suitable for outdoor activities in London is high compared to other times of the year. According to History, King George II, who was born in October, was the first monarch to move his birthday pageantry to the summer, but he combined his official celebration with a summer military parade in 1748. The reigning monarch's actual birthday is still publicly acknowledged with a royal gun salute, but the sovereign typically celebrates privately otherwise. During Trooping the Colour, a parade of royals and military personnel travels from Buckingham Palace to the Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall in London. The royal family's website states that the parade includes over 1,400 soldiers, 400 musicians, and 200 horses, and the royals typically ride on horseback or in carriages. The monarch can participate in the event from either carriage or horseback. According to the BBC, Queen Elizabeth II rode a horse during the parade until 1987. Once the parade reaches Whitehall, the monarch formally inspects the troops during the ceremony. Likewise, the chosen Regimental Colour, or flag, is carried through the ranks of participating soldiers before they march back to Buckingham Palace. Thousands of onlookers cheer on the participants as they process. According to an FOIA request to the Ministry of Defence, the 2021 Trooping the Colour cost 59,662 pounds, which would be about $81,000 today. That total includes stable costs, transportation, and fuel, among other fees, though it does not factor in the cost of the police presence required to keep the event safe for the royals and attendees. Trooping the Colour culminates in a flypast by RAF pilots over Buckingham Palace as the royal family watches from the balcony. Trooping the Colour marks one of the few times a year the royal family gathers in one place, so they are always heavily photographed when they appear on the balcony. The occasion offers a chance to see how royals interact with each other, with people analyzing shots of Princess Diana and Prince Harry in years past. Royal children often steal the show when they appear at Buckingham Palace for the event as well. Royals also use the occasion to send a message to the public since it draws so much public interest. For instance, the 2024 Trooping the Colour served as the backdrop for Kate Middleton to make her return to public duty after she announced she was undergoing treatment for cancer in March 2024. She rode to the event in a carriage with her children and waved from the Buckingham Palace balcony with the royal family. The Princess of Wales announced she was in remission in January. Likewise, King Charles appeared at the 2024 Trooping the Colour amid his ongoing weekly cancer treatments, though he rode in a carriage in the parade with Queen Camilla instead of on horseback as a result of his health. The Times reported the monarch will ride in a carriage again for the 2025 event, though Prince William, his heir, and his sister Princess Anne will ride on horseback through the parade. Anne is the king's Gold-Stick-In-Waiting, his ceremonial personal protection officer, at ceremonial events. She first served as her brother's gold stick at his 2023 coronation.
