Kolkata: Several
open-air restaurants
have started their back-end work to correct '
irregularities
' for which they were pulled up. Meanwhile, the Hotel and Restaurants' Association of Eastern India (
HRAEI
) has launched hygiene training for kitchen workers of all restaurants, which will be conducted in batches.A south Kolkata restaurant 'altered' its rooftop section to meet the regulations, according to a restaurant body official.
"It received a notice from the KMC and took measures. The restaurant is now waiting for an inspection by the civic authorities and the fire department to receive a final clearance," he said.A Burrabazar rooftop restaurant was inspected by civic authorities and the fire department, which have given it clearance, according to the restaurant. Several others that received a notice from the KMC are waiting for the SOP that the civic body has prepared for rooftop eateries. It could bring about clarity, felt restaurants' bodies. "The SOP will help to remove ambiguity and hasten the move to remove irregularities, if there are any," said HRAEI president Sudesh Poddar.HRAEI's '
Food Safety
Training and Certification' (FOSTAC) programme on advanced catering at The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkata was was inaugurated earlier this week.
The programme — to be held twice a month for a year — aims at raising hygiene standards across the city's restaurants. It saw participation from hospitality professionals from the city and neighbouring states. "The training will focus on food safety protocols and best practices in catering, aligned with the latest Food Safety and Standards Authority of India guidelines.
The inaugural session was conducted by Anup Kumar Tiwari, national diamond trainer, FOSTAC.This initiative is part of HRAEI's continuous efforts to promote food safety, hygiene, and skill development within the hospitality sector, said Poddar, adding that other than civic, fire, and other safety norms, food safety was essential for all eateries. Through these training programmes, we want to instil a culture of excellence and accountability that meets global standards," he said.

Restoration of New Market clock tower may start in a fortnight

Kolkata: A report detailing the scope of work for the restoration of the New Market clock tower was submitted to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) by restoration architect Anjan Mitra on Wednesday. The document will form the basis of an agreement to be signed between KMC, which owns the 151-year-old market, and Trisys, which is coordinating the restoration funded by a private firm. According to Mitra, though the project received an in-principle approval, a formal agreement needs to be signed, which is likely to be concluded within a fortnight. Though the tower with the four-faced clock and its Westminster chimes survived many monsoons and storms, it was left battered and bruised by cyclonic storm Amphan. Lack of maintenance thereafter led to further damage. Water seeped in, causing cracks in the structure. The timber floors and decorative elements, including cast iron railings, will have to be redone. The wooden slats in the spire have fallen apart and the Westminster chimes and hourly dongs have stopped. Portions of the intricate glasses that made up the 7-ft diameter dials went missing and wild vegetation has taken root. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? "We will have to strengthen the structural stability of the tower, stop seepage of water, repair the flooring and the interior, improve light and ventilation, replace damaged artwork, and overhaul the clock and its chiming mechanism. The entire work will take around six months," said Mitra, who will lead the restoration team for the project. He has restored the Metropolitan Building, Howrah Town Hall, and Sister Nivedita's house. Before work begins, Mitra also wants KMC to ensure coordination with police for temporary closure of Fenwick Bazar Street when required, arrangement for electric supply, site to stock repair and restoration material, and identify a place to set up temporary labour shelter. KMC MMiC market Amiruddin (Bobby) assured the civic body's cooperation with the agency undertaking the restoration. "We want the clock tower to be restored in a manner that will wow visitors and will do everything needed to extend our cooperation," he said. Swapan and Satyajit Dutta, the father-son duo that repaired and revived multiple public clock mechanisms in the city in recent years, will undertake the restoration of the Gillett & Johnston clock of the UK, in which one mechanism operates all four clocks. "The clock will need a thorough overhaul. The entire process will take around two months," said Satyajit. This is the first such restoration of a govt property to be funded by a private firm. Trisys CEO Mudar Patherya, who has banded together heritage lovers to form Kolkata Restorers that crowd-funded illumination of public buildings and repairs of public clocks, said city-based private firm Techno Electric decided to fund the restoration of the New Market clock tower. Company MD P P Gupta said, "I came to the city 50 years ago as a bank employee, ventured into business and established myself. It feels good to be able to do something for the city."

Hawker pushback drive to begin anew after Eid

1 2 Kolkata: A Town-Vending Committee meeting held at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters on Wednesday decided to conduct drives to keep carriageways free in and around New Market after Eid. A fortnight ago, TVC members advocated a continuous drive on Bertram Street, Humayun Place, Lindsay Street, and Hogg Street to clear hawkers from carriageways. Accordingly, cops from New Market and KMC officials conducted a joint drive and drove hawkers away from these areas. The TVC meeting took stock of the growing hawker encroachment menace in the New Market area. The representatives of hawker unions expressed apprehensions that local hawker unions in the New Market zone were clashing with each other to gain control over the carriageways. The scene was particularly bad in Bertram Street, Hogg Street, and Humayun Place, they said. Trouble erupted in the New Market area on Feb 15 as hawkers clashed on Bertram Street over the right to occupy the carriageway. According to a KMC official, a stretch of Bertram Street reserved for parking cars but usurped by hawkers for years was recently cleared by a joint KMC-cop drive. "We must keep up the pressure or else the parking space is likely to be encroached again," said a KMC official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Viva a melhor experiência de estudo no exterior (Inscreva-se agora) Study Abroad Saiba Mais Undo Speaking about hawker 'invasion' in the New Market area, the general-secretary of Hawker Sangram Committee, Saktiman Ghosh, wondered how the hawkers were allowed to gobble up carriageways. "We used to move court to protect the livelihood of hawkers in the past. Now we are moving court to implement hawking rules that ban hawking on carriageways. I fail to understand why cops can't control the situation in New Market even after a special drive," said Ghosh. Ghosh argued if hawkers are allowed to encroach on the carriageways in the New Market area, hawkers in Gariahat, Hatibagan, Chandni Chowk, and other hawking zones would do the same. MMiC and TVC co-chairman, Debasish Kumar, said, "We can't sit idle. Timely action will be taken" .

SNB, Entally among 4 sites to get KMC EV charging stns

In a bid to curb air pollution by promoting electric vehicles , Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to set up four more EV charging stations . Currently, the KMC electrical department runs three such charging stations. According to the member, mayor-in-council overseeing KMC electrical department, Sandip Bakshi, land has been identified in Beleghata, Ultadanga (off EM Bypass), Entally , and S N Banerjee Road for setting up the EV charging stations. It has already started setting up the charging station near Esplanade. It will have two 30 kW electric charging points only for four-wheelers. The proposed unit is being constructed at the eastern flank of KMC headquarters , at Hogg Street and S N Banerjee Road crossing. It will be operational soon. The lighting department of KMC has been supervising the work, and once operational, these will be handed over to the parking department. A Bangalore-based firm is setting up the EV charging station. It has installed several charging points for the NKDA in the past. "Though it depends on battery size, a completely drained battery of an e-car can be fully charged here in 30 minutes due to its fast-charging capacity," said an expert working with the project. KMC has roped in a Kolkata-based firm for setting up 12 EV charging stations across the city. According to the agreement, the civic body will provide space for setting up such charging stations and, in lieu, will earn a part of the revenue to be generated after these EV charging stations start functioning. The civic body is in the process of identifying land near its parking lots that will be handed over to the firm for setting up charging stations. According to modalities being worked out before inking a pact, while the firm may be allowed to levy Rs 12-15 (maximum) on car owners for one kilowatt unit of charging an EV, KMC will earn Rs 1.2 from the deal. An official said besides looking for land in locations identified for handing over to the firm, the civic body was also in search of plots in prime locations so that motorists find it convenient to charge their vehicles. KMC also recently made it mandatory for realty developers taking up construction of high-rises to keep 50% of car parking space reserved for EV charging points.
