KFSHRC receives Italy's Health Minister, highlights medical advancements
Riyadh: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh received H.E. Orazio Schillaci, Italy's Minister of Health, during an official visit aimed at exploring key areas of medical excellence and learning more about Saudi Arabia's experience in advancing specialized healthcare services.
H.E. was welcomed by Dr. Björn Zoëga, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of KFSHRC. The visit featured a comprehensive briefing on the Heart Centre of Excellence and the Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence, along with an overview of the latest technologies used in treating complex cardiac conditions and performing minimally invasive robotic surgeries. These innovations have significantly reduced complications, accelerated recovery, and lowered healthcare costs.
This visit reflects the growing global interest in KFSHRC's pioneering model, which integrates deep clinical expertise with cutting-edge medical technologies. The hospital has achieved several historic milestones, including the world's first fully robotic heart transplant and the first fully robotic liver transplant. These breakthroughs reinforce its standing as a global reference in advanced specialized care.

Hamdan Foundation advances to judging stage of 2025 Medical Awards after screening 330 submissions
Dubai, UAE: Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences has announced the completion of the screening process for the 2025 Medical Awards, which aim to recognize outstanding achievements in healthcare at both the local and regional levels. According to the awards committee, this year's cycle received a total of 330 submissions from 18 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, Oman, Iraq, India, Kuwait, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Jordan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, the United States, Pakistan, Tunisia, Syria, and Ghana. Following an initial review, 261 submissions advanced to the administrative and technical screening stage, which involved verifying compliance with the award's eligibility criteria and guidelines. Of those, 161 applications were confirmed as eligible and are now set to proceed to the judging phase, scheduled to begin on 2 June and continue until 15 October. The judging process will be carried out by specialized committees comprising distinguished experts in the field. Each submission will be assessed according to the specific evaluation criteria established for each award category. Dr. Salama Al Muhairi, Director of Medical Excellence at Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, emphasized the significance of this stage, noting that the evaluation and screening of submissions adhere to the highest standards to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process. She added that these efforts reflect the merit and credibility of the Medical Excellence Awards, which seek to spotlight innovations and achievements that contribute to the advancement of medical practices. The awards also aim to encourage and support researchers in producing impactful and innovative studies in medicine and healthcare. This ISO certification represents the highest global standards for quality management systems in the design and manufacture of medical devices. It reflects the KFSHRC's strength in delivering innovative, custom-made solutions in complex clinical settings with rigorous quality control and assurance. KFSHRC's 3D Printing Services Department has become a cornerstone of the hospital's precision healthcare ecosystem. The department uses advanced additive manufacturing to produce patient-specific anatomical models, surgical guides, prosthetics and implants to improve surgical planning, reduce intraoperative risks, and augment clinical outcomes. In 2023, the department produced over 1,100 physical models and more than 5,000 digital simulations, which shortened average surgery time by 30% and reduced complications by 85%, significantly improving patient satisfaction.
