Western Sahara : Polisario urges Morocco to withdraw autonomy plan

Ya Biladi23-04-2025

The Polisario Front is calling for Morocco to withdraw its autonomy initiative for Western Sahara. This demand was voiced by the movement's newly appointed «Minister of Foreign Affairs», Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, in an interview with a Portuguese media outlet, as reported by the Polisario's press.
«Morocco must seek the support of the Sahrawi people and abandon its autonomy proposal if it wishes to resolve the Western Sahara issue», Beissat stated, adding that «this kind of diplomatic campaign [in favor of autonomy, ed.] once again illustrates Morocco's lack of political will to reach a peaceful and genuine solution in line with international law».
His remarks come at a time when several countries, including Moldova and Croatia, have recently expressed support for Morocco's autonomy plan, describing it as a «serious and credible» basis for resolving the regional conflict.
The Trump administration also reaffirmed its position on April 8, stating: «the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco's serious, credible, and realistic Autonomy Proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute».
Amid growing international backing for the Moroccan proposal, the Polisario's «Minister of the Interior», Brahim Bachir Bouilla, acknowledged in a recent interview with an Algerian outlet that «the Moroccan autonomy plan is one option among others on the table».
Beissat's latest statement underscores the strategic divisions within the separatist movement, as it struggles to maintain a unified position in the face of increasing support for Morocco's plan.

Morocco Joins Pan-African Labor Migration Law Initiative in Nairobi

Doha – Morocco is participating in a continental consultation on labor migration legislation in Africa, launched June 16-18 in Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day event was initiated by the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the legislative arm of the African Union (AU). Hanaa Benkhair, a Moroccan parliamentary advisor and PAP member, is representing the North African country at the meeting, which is organized in partnership with the AU Commission and the International Labour Organization (ILO). In a statement to MAP, Benkhair stressed that Morocco's participation demonstrates the country's commitment to strategic continental initiatives. She noted this engagement reflects Morocco's determination to contribute to building a unified, secure, and prosperous Africa. 'It also shows Morocco's involvement in the continental process aimed at developing effective and equitable governance of labor migration in Africa,' Benkhair stated. The consultation seeks to deepen discussions with African parliamentary, institutional, and civil society stakeholders. Its goal is to develop a unified legislative framework governing labor migration on the continent. Such a framework would ensure respect for migrant workers' fundamental rights while promoting economic and social integration between African countries. The initiative forms part of a legislative process to create a model law on labor migration. The project aims to provide harmonized legal standards for countries across Africa. This would guarantee protection of migrant workers' rights and contribute to better migration governance at national, regional, and continental levels. The Nairobi gathering brings together representatives from parliaments, employer and trade union organizations, as well as experts from the AU and ILO are also participating. Discussions will address legal aspects related to human rights and development linked to labor migration. Participants will exchange experiences and best practices to strengthen legislative frameworks and improve coordination continent-wide. The PAP, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, serves as a consultative assembly of the AU. It was established under Article 5 of the AU Constitutive Act and officially began operations on March 18, 2004. Each member state is represented in the PAP by five parliamentarians from both majority and opposition parties, including at least one woman. These representatives are elected or appointed by their national parliaments or legislative bodies. The PAP's mandate includes ensuring 'the full participation of African peoples in the economic development and integration of the continent.'

Western Sahara: Panama Renews Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan

Rabat – Panama renewed its support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan as a serious, credible, and realistic basis to resolve the dispute over Western Sahara. Panama's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez, reaffirmed his country's unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity on Monday following a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, today in Rabat. During a press conference, the Panamanian minister stressed that Morocco's 2007 Autonomy Plan 'should be the only solution in the future,' noting that his position on the dispute is clear and firm – backing the Moroccan initiative as a path toward a lasting resolution. Morocco's autonomy initiative has been enjoying growing support with over 113 countries – seeing it as the most or only feasible political framework to end the dispute. In November last year, Panama suspended diplomatic relations with the self-styled SADR, a separatist group controlled by Algeria and run by Polisario's leadership. 'The Republic of Panama , prioritizing national interests and remaining faithful to the fundamental principles of its foreign policy, reaffirms its conviction in the objectives and values that guide multilateralism and reiterates its commitment to continue supporting the efforts made by the Secretary General and the international community, under the framework of the UN, toward a peaceful, just, sustainable, and acceptable solution for the parties concerned with the Sahara issue,' a statement from the Panamanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Following the official announcement, Panama announced its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute. It also recalls the importance of advancing the political process on the international level, supporting the UN-led political process in finding a mutually acceptable and agreed-upon solution to the dispute. During his working visit, the Panamanian foreign minister also delivered a written message to King Mohammed VI from the president of the country Jose Raul Moulino. A statement published by Morocco's news agency said the message 'Reflects the will of the Heads of State of both countries to strengthen the positive momentum in Morocco-Panama relations and to elevate them to broader horizons of cooperation and complementarity in the service of the two friendly nations.' Polisario Front criticizes exclusion from Africa Day celebration in Canary Islands

The Polisario Front was not invited to the Africa Day celebration in the Canary Islands, organized this week by the Federation of African Associations of the archipelago. According to an Iberian media outlet, the Polisario Front's delegation in the Canary Islands «expressed regret in a statement released on Sunday, June 15, over the exclusion of Western Sahara from the festival». The Front's representatives also condemned «attempts to mislead citizens about the sovereignty of Western Sahara, which contradict international law and the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union». Meanwhile, Kingsley Odiesi, president of the Federation of African Associations of the Canary Islands, told the Iberian press that «the festival was created as a gesture of gratitude for the support and hospitality that the Canary Islands extend to Africans». He explained the Polisario's absence by noting that its representative had withdrawn from the Federation of African Associations of the archipelago.
