Hannah Hampton pays tribute to grandad who died before Euro 2025 in touching post
Hannah Hampton has penned a beautiful tribute to her grandfather following England's Euro 2025 triumph, revealing that he sadly passed away just two days before the start of the tournament.
Hampton, 24, was the Lionesses hero in a dramatic penalty shootout against Spain in Sunday's final, saving two spot-kicks to inspire England to a second consecutive European title.
And she marked the occasion by sharing a poignant post on her Instagram account paying tribute to her late grandfather, who was 'one of her biggest supporters'.
"Dear Grandpa," she wrote. "Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left. It still doesn't feel real. I kept thinking when I'd call nannie I'd hear your voice again - one of your jokes, or one of those little comments you'd make that somehow said everything without saying much at all.
"You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there - watching, encouraging, teaching. You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way.
"I miss our chats. I miss you saying 'Only us athletes understand' — always with a little smirk like you were in on something special. And you were. You got it. You understood what this meant to me. You understood what it took.
"It breaks my heart that you didn't get to see me walk out for our country at my first major tournament... something you dreamed of for me, something we talked about so many times. I wanted to see your face or hear your voice after the game calling back home. I wanted to share that with you.
"But I know, deep down, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the pitch. In the tough moments. I heard you in my head when I needed strength.
"I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. I carried you through every minute. "And I always will. I did it. WE DID IT."

Hibs transfer news: Blackburn commit to £1.5 million move for Socceroos star
Aussie defender had extension triggered at end of season - so will Scotland veteran Hanley come in as replacement? Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay revealed that the Easter Road club had triggered Lewis Miller's contract extension at the end of last season in order to cash in on interest in the Socceroos star. And the move has paid off – with Blackburn agreeing to a compensation package worth up to £1.5 million for the 24-year-old. Hibs confirmed this evening that Miller's transfer to the EFL Championship side had gone through. It is understood that the overall compensation package, including extremely achievable add-ons, will total £1.5 million if all targets are hit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mackay revealed that Hibs had rejected lesser bids earlier this summer, saying: 'We triggered Lewis Miller's contract extension back in April, knowing there was a lot of interest in him from the UK and abroad. It's been widely reported that we rejected bids for him earlier in the window and have worked hard to get a fee that reflects his true value I'd like to thank Lewis for all his efforts during his time with us and wish him all the best for the future.' David Gray says fullback will 'go a long way' Head coach David Gray backed Miller to go far in the English game, saying: 'I'd like to start by thanking Millsy for all his efforts during his time with us. Since making the move to Scotland, he's been coachable, willing to learn, and has relentlessly worked on his game. 'He's certainly seen the rewards for that both at club level and internationally. We know he can go a long way and wish him all the best in England with Blackburn.' In an official statement just released by Hibs, the club revealed: 'We can confirm that Lewis Miller has joined Blackburn Rovers on a permanent transfer. The terms of the 24-year-old's transfer will remain undisclosed, however, the club has received a significant fee. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Miller joined Hibs in the summer of 2022 and went on to make 85 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals. The defender made a significant contribution during the 2024/25 campaign as Hibs finished third in the William Hill Premiership, securing European football. 'During his time in Edinburgh, he went from strength-to-strength earning his first senior caps for Australia's National Team and representing his country in major international tournaments.' Gray is now in the market for a defender to replace Miller. Although Hibs have plenty of cover at right back and wingback, Miller's shifts on the right side of a back three will be missed. Scotland defender Grant Hanley is still weighing up his options, having visited Easter Road as a guest of former team-mate David Marshall - now Mackay's right-hand man - for last week's Europa League defeat to Midtjylland. Hibs remain interested in adding the 33-year-old former Newcastle, Norwich and Blackburn centre-half, now a free agent, to their squad. Miller spoke to The Evening News during Hibernian's pre-season trip to Holland, opening up on his World Cup dreams and admitting that the Easter Road club had 'made' him as a footballer.

Hearts vs Aberdeen LIVE score and goal updates from the Premiership clash at Tynecastle
It's a Monday night blockbuster in the capital as Hearts and Aberdeen go head to head. The country may well be getting battered by Storm Floris but it is GAME ON in Gorgie as the opening weekend comes to a close. Derek McInnes has adjusted to life in the Tynecastle dugout and sailed through the Premier Sports Cup group stage with a 100 per cent record while Jimmy Thelin's men return to competitive action for the first time tonight. They avoided the opening part of the competition due to European involvement with the Dons discovering that it is FCSB or Drita that stand between them and Europa League football. Defeat and it is Conference League once again for the Reds. But the focus is on the here and now for both teams as they look to get off to a flier in the new league campaign. 17:36Alan Galindo Magnusson boosts Hearts ranks Hearts gave fans a pre-Premiership return boost with another new signing. Tomas Bent Magnusson has arrived from Valur and put pen to paper on a three-year deal. The centre-midfielder is one Derek McInnes hopes will bring a real presence to his side. I'm pleased we've been able to bring Tomas in ahead of tonight's game. He'll bring a presence to the middle of the park with his height and athleticism, and he's a very dynamic player in that he can both defend and attack. I'm looking forward to working with him in the weeks and months ahead. 16:44Alan Galindo 'We've got a lot to do to make up for last season' - Derek McInnes Derek McInnes insists Hearts have a lot to do to make up for last season. The capital club missed out on European football, failed to reach a cup final and finished in the bottom half in a miserable campaign. But it is a fresh start tonight and the new boss hopes to have his team in the European mixer once again and fighting to reach Hampden. Obviously, we've got to improve clearly on what we served up last season. As a club, we never really got what we wanted. There was obviously the extra demand of European football, but domestically, not to get to the Cup final and not even get top six. We've got a lot to do to make up for last season. We'd like to think that we can be searching and striving for European football in amongst those places and try to get to Hampden. I don't think any Hearts player or any Hearts manager or staff should shy away from that demand. It's clearly there. We accept it and we've got to go and set about the task of doing that. We're not here to mess about. We're here to try and do something while we're here. I do feel that a Hearts player, when they sign here, should have those objectives. I think it's clearly what the Hearts fans expect. As I said when I got announced as a manager, all we've got to try and do, first and foremost, is meet the expectations of the Hearts fans. I would say that their expectations is what we expect from ourselves. Beyond that, going forward, hopefully we can exceed those expectations. For now, we're not going to shout our mouths off. We're going to do this and we're going to do that. In the back of last season, we never reached a final and we were in the bottom six. There's work to be done. We're encouraged by what the players have given us since they've come in. It's not just about new signings and this new wave of new players. Any new player coming in has got a part to play. Equally, the players who were here last season, the players who have been here for a while, have got a huge part to play as well. It's those players that we feel we're really pleased with, that we're getting good performances out of as well. It's a collective effort to try and meet that demand. 16:41Alan Galindo Thelin ready for Hearts Jimmy Thelin insists Aberdeen are ready for the Premiership opener. The Scottish Cup winners return to competitive action tonight at Tynecastle. He insists his troops are ready for the first game of the season as they come up against a familiar face in Derek McInnes. When you have a pre-season, you have to be ready. You are as good as you are when you start the season, and then hopefully you can always develop and grow during the season. But we are ready for an exciting first league game now, away against Hearts and to play in front of our away support, the atmosphere, a competitive game. There is a lot of positive things to look forward to. Of course we feel ready for this game.

Celtic stars fired up for £40m Champions League shootout as playoff test holds no fear
Luke McCowan is adamant Brendan Rodgers' side are raring to go after discovering their playoff fate Luke McCowan lived out his Bhoyhood dream on Flag Day. Now he's determined to help fire Celtic back to Europe's elite. The Hoops diehard came off the bench to sink St Mirren by smashing a dramatic late winner. And with a favourable play-off draw handing Celts a golden chance at Champions League qualification, McCowan insists they're ready to rise to the challenge. The Parkhead side discovered on Monday they'll face either FC Kairat Almaty or Slovan Bratislava for a place back at Europe's top table. It's a draw Brendan Rodgers would've snapped your hand off for after avoiding dangerous ties against Basel and Sturm Graz. Celtic have nothing to fear against Slovan after dismantling the Slovakians 5-1 in last season's Champions League opener - their biggest-ever win in the competition. Meanwhile, Almaty's only European adventure was finishing fourth in their 2021/22 Europa Conference League group. But with £40million on the line, it's still a nerve-wracking two-legged shootout with absolutely no margin for error. Rodgers knows his troops will need to show a far more ruthless streak than they did against St Mirren. Luckily, McCowan was there to dig them out of a hole. And the midfielder is adamant they'll only get stronger heading into the playoffs. The ex-Dundee star said: 'We're just at the start. You have a good pre-season, you work really hard, obviously away in different countries and whatever, getting your fitness levels high. 'It's about coming into the game on Sunday and implementing that and letting that carry on throughout the games to come. 'You've got Champions League qualifiers to come and it's just about the next step, the next game, the next performance. 'The boys know that and it's just about staying level-headed with that.' That all-important first leg at Celtic Park is just a fortnight away. But if it were tomorrow? McCowan insists they'd be more than ready to go. He said: 'I'm sure we will be, aye. I mean if you were to ask us if we played it this midweek, I'm sure we'd all be ready. 'So it makes no difference being in two weeks. If anything, I think we'll be more prepared. 'These players play under massive pressure all the time. I keep repeating it, but it's what playing at this club takes. 'You need to be ready for that pressure, you need to have your chest out, your head high and go and show that you're a Celtic player.' Ambitious boss Rodgers is desperate to leave his mark on Europe. And Celtic have already shown they can go toe-to-toe with the elite, after pushing Bayern Munich all the way in last season's knockouts. McCowan knows it's time to prove it all over again. He said: 'I think we showed that last year, it's about proving it again. There's always a demand for more at this club. 'The more games under our belt within the season, the quicker we'll get up to speed and the performance levels will hopefully credit points on the board throughout the Champions League phases and the qualifiers and whatever it may be, so we just need to keep performing well.' McCowan cut a calm figure in front of the cameras after his match-winning heroics. But deep down, the 27-year-old will be buzzing to have kick-started the bid for five-in-a-row. Just when it looked like the Buddies would spoil the party, McCowan popped up to drill a clinical low strike into the corner. He smiled: 'Aye, it feels good. Good to start the season off with a win. It's always important to go off to a good start. 'It's what you're here to do. You're here to score goals and help the team win games. Luckily enough, I've done that today. 'It's just one of those ones, you want to create energy, you want to create positivity when you're coming off the bench and I think at the point we made the changes, they probably needed it. 'Some fresh legs, stuff like that, so that's what the squad's there for.' "It could have been Jimmy [James Forrest] coming off the bench and scoring like he did at the end of last season. "It was just me there today and I'm sure through the season there'll be more moments like that. 'Your performance levels are always the thing you look at the most. 'Even if you came away from that game at 0-0, you know your performance level was good, you know you created so many chances in the game. 'But the thing that you come away from after the game with a good performance is the three points and the boys are chuffed with that. 'We had a ton of chances. We had enough chances to go and win probably two football matches. 'Really unlucky with a few hitting the post, obviously a goal chopped off as well. 'Listen on another day, you probably come away scoring two or three, maybe more. 'But at the end of the day, it's three points and that's what we're glad with.' Celtic face Aberdeen and Falkirk before that playoff blockbuster. But McCowan made it clear this weekend's trip to Pittodrie is at the forefront of their minds. He added: 'It's an old cliche but Aberdeen on Sunday again, you hit that with a good performance, then you go into the qualifiers feeling ready, feeling up to scratch and you want to go into them as positive as you can.'
