DRDO develops 5.56x45 mm CQB carbine in partnership with private sector firm
New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): In a significant development, a Carbine developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has emerged as the lowest bidder in the Indian Army tender for buying over 4 lakh close-quarter battle carbines for operations. The Indian Army has been looking to acquire these carbines for a long time, but has not been able to make any progress due to the withdrawal of tenders. If the Indian Army finally signs the tender for buying the carbines, this would be one of the biggest contracts ever for Indian-designed and developed small arms. Meanwhile on June 17, India entered into a new quantum era by successfully demonstrating an experimental advancement through DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), IIT Delhi, according to the official statement from the Ministry of Defence. Free-space quantum secure communication using quantum entanglement over a distance of more than one km was achieved via a free-space optical link established on the IIT Delhi campus. The experiment attained a secure key rate of nearly 240 bits per second with a quantum bit error rate of less than 7 per per the release, this entanglement-assisted quantum secure communication paves the way for real-time applications in quantum cybersecurity, including long-distance Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the development of quantum networks, and the future quantum internet. These efforts align with India's broader objectives to advance quantum technologies for national development. Under the project 'Design and development of photonic technologies for free space QKD', sanctioned by Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management (DFTM), DRDO, the demonstration was given by Prof Bhaskar Kanseri's research group in the presence of several dignitaries, including the DRDO DG (MED, COS & CS), Director SAG, Director DFTM, Dean (R&D) IIT Delhi, Director (DIA-CoE) and DRDO laboratory scientists. Varsity launches innovative ‘industry inside the campus' initiative
Belagavi: In a pioneering step towards integrating industry with academics, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, has launched a novel initiative titled 'Industry Inside the Campus'. This move comes on the heels of the university making headlines for declaring exam results within an hour—yet another testament to its push towards student-centric reforms. To implement this new concept, VTU has established the Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) on its main campus, opening up space for companies in drone technology, software development, electric vehicles, IoT, PCB manufacturing, AR/VR, and more. These companies are now operational on campus, with full-fledged training for final-year engineering students set to begin from August. Speaking to this reporter , VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Vidyashankar said, 'Students now gain hands-on experience and practical exposure within the campus. We've established rapid innovation centres such as the Schneider Acceleration Centre, Proteus, Cadence, and an Electrical Vehicle Lab to bridge the skill gap. Through VRIF, we aim to create not just employees but future employers.' One of the key players in the initiative is Saras Aerospace, a startup established in 2022, specializing in carbon fiber drones and airframe production. Co-founder Brijesh Kumar Koparde noted, 'Thanks to VTU, we operate from within the campus. We train students not only in drone technology but also in equipment used for drone testing. We've delivered over 200 drones across the country, including to the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Our product range includes drones valued between RS1.5 lakh and RS 30 lakh.'Currently, nearly 90 students are undergoing hands-on training with Saras Aerospace. Rajat Hanshate, a final-year engineering student, shared, 'I've developed an Unmanned Ground Vehicle during my internship here. From 3D modeling to integrating sensors and cameras, everything was facilitated. I gained immense exposure to the practical aspects of drone-making for both defence and agriculture.' Another student, Swastik Hegde, emphasized the value of his training, 'I've been interning here for two months. I've learned PCB design and IoT sensor integration. I even worked on a Retractor Landing Gear project. I'm truly grateful to VTU for creating such platforms.' The 'Industry Inside the Campus' initiative is expected to benefit at least 2,500 students in the coming academic year. The university hopes this integrated industry-academia ecosystem will not only make graduates job-ready but also empower them to become entrepreneurs. 'This is not just about employment, it's about entrepreneurship,' reiterated Prof. Vidyashankar.

State ropes in two IITs for audit of long bridges
1 2 3 4 Patna: The road construction department will assess the health of all bridges across the state to determine their structural condition and plan maintenance accordingly. The initiative, under the newly approved bridge maintenance policy, includes the development of a comprehensive bridge health index (BHI) and the placement of QR codes at bridge sites for public access to structural data. The department will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two IITs to conduct third-party audits of bridges longer than 250 metres. The audits aim to identify vulnerabilities using modern technologies and prevent accidents or disruptions due to bridge damage, which often leads to economic and human losses. Speaking to TOI over the phone, road construction minister Nitin Nabin said all bridges would be subject to regular inspection and maintenance. "Data will be collected using advanced tools such as visual inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT), sensors and drone cameras. Each bridge will be assessed for its BHI and maintenance priority index (MPI) and a health card will be prepared," he said. According to Nabin, the department has built 3,968 bridges over the past 18 years, including 532 major bridges, mega bridges and flyovers. He also said QR codes would be installed on signboards near bridges to allow public access to their maintenance history. "Anyone can scan the QR code and get details about the bridge's upkeep," Nabin said. The department will engage IIT Delhi and IIT Patna for auditing bridges over 250 metres. An MoU is set to be signed next week. IIT Delhi will assess 40 bridges in north Bihar while IIT Patna will audit 45 bridges in south Bihar. Both institutions will also prepare cost estimates for necessary repair work, which will be executed by Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited under the Bihar State Bridge Management and Maintenance Policy, 2025.
