Asalanka ton leads Sri Lanka to 244 in first Bangladesh ODI
Electing to bat, Sri Lanka slipped to 29-3 but Asalanka stood firm in his 106 to thwart a persistent Bangladesh bowling attack at the start of the three-match series.
Pace spearhead Taskin Ahmed led the bowling charge with four wickets, but the left-handed Asalanka struck his fifth ODI century to help the hosts to a competitive total in 49.2 overs.
Asalanka put on two crucial stands including a 60-run partnership with Kusal Mendis, who made 45, and then 64 runs with Janith Liyanage.
Mendis and Liyanage, who made 29, failed to capitalise on their starts as Bangladesh rattled the opposition middle-order.
Mendis was trapped leg-before by debutant left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam. Liyanage perished trying to go big against part-time spinner Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Bangladesh's veteran seamer Mustafizur Rahman hobbled off with what looked like a pulled muscle after sending down just six overs.
They were a bowler short and were forced to rely on Shanto.
Asalanka brought up his hundred -- his fourth at this ground -- with a single to short cover, joining an elite club of centurions at the R Premadasa Stadium that includes Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Sanath Jayasuriya.
The skipper eventually fell in the final over, caught on the boundary while looking to clear the ropes in search of quick runs.
Taskin returned figures of 4-47 and was ably supported by Tanzim Hasan Sakib, who took three wickets.
Sri Lanka were bowled out with four balls remaining, leaving Bangladesh a target of 245 to chase under lights.

David produced a sparkling 83 off 53 balls to guide Australia to a 17-run win in the series-opener against South Africa on Sunday and a record ninth victory in succession. "We've been playing together as a group now for a while, so there's not a great deal of instruction from the coaches,' said player-of-the-match David in Darwin. "They trust the players. "We trust ourselves to go out there and we understand the game situation. We make decisions on the fly because that's the nature of T20 cricket. "I think if you'd watched our guys bat over the last period, wherever they bat around the world and when they play for the Australian team, it's close to all guns blazing. "You can probably expect to see that a little bit from our team. That's how we think we play best." David has been in top form, racking up 215 runs in his past three T20I innings, which includes a 37-ball century against the West Indies in St Kitts last month. His hot streak has revived queries on whether he might consider reviving an ODI career that lasted only four matches against South Africa in 2023. However, David was not included in the ODI squad for South Africa and poured cold water on the idea of a return in the near future. "That's not part of the plan for me," David said. Nawaz sparks Pakistan to five-wicket ODI win over West Indies
TAROUBA, (Trinidad and Tobago): Hasan Nawaz made a triumphant one-day international debut, going 63 not out on Friday to power Pakistan over West Indies by five wickets in their ODI series opener. Nawaz and Hussain Talat formed a sixth-wicket partnership of 104 not out to rally the visitors in the day-night affair, with game two on Sunday and the concluder on Tuesday. West Indies went 280 all out with Evin Lewis leading the way on 60 from 62 balls with three sixes and five fours while Shai Hope added 55 and Roston Chase contributed 53. Needing 281 to win, Pakistan got 53 runs from Mohammad Rizwan before he was bowled lbw by Shamar Joseph in the 38th over with the visitors still 101 runs shy of victory, setting the stage for heroics by Nawaz and Talat. Nawaz struck for six on the second ball of the 49th over and blasted the winning shot to the boundary off the final delivery by Joseph, giving Pakistan the victory with seven balls to spare. In all, Nawaz reached 63 on 54 balls with three sixes and five fours while Talat finished on 41 from 37 balls with one six and four fours. Pakistan won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat first, a choice that paid quick dividends when Brandon King was taken for four on the fifth ball of the opening over, bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi — his first of four wickets — and caught by Babar Azam off stump.
