Mumbai Indians Eye Sri Lanka's ODI Captain As A Replacement Player For IPL 2025: Report

Last Updated: Asalanka has played 137 T20 matches so far, in which, with the help of 14 half-centuries, he has scored 2767 runs and picked up 27 wickets. Sri Lanka's white-captain Charith Asalanka is one of the players Mumbai Indians are eyeing as a replacement player for the last phase of IPL 2025. As things stand, three players – Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton – won't feature for MI should they advance to the playoffs starting May 29 due to international commitments. While Jacks has been named in England's ODI squad for a three-match series at home against the West Indies, Bosch and Rickelton are set to return to South Africa as part of the team's preparation for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. According to Newswire, 'Sri Lanka's white-ball captain Charith Asalanka has reportedly been approached by Mumbai Indians to join the squad for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. While discussions are believed to be ongoing, there has been no official confirmation from either Asalanka or the Mumbai Indians so far." Asalanka, who has played a total of 137 T20 matches so far, has never featured in the IPL before. Bosch, Rickelton and Jacks are integral members of MI's playing XI in IPL 2025. While Rickelton has featured in all the 12 matches played so far by the franchise, Jacks has made 11 appearances for the Mumbai Indians, and Bosch has played the last three matches against LSG, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans. While Asalanka could be a like-for-like replacement of Jacks, MI will have to look for an able replacement of Rickelton, who has proved his worth in this year's IPL not just as an opening batter but also as a wicketkeeper. With 14 points after 12 matches played so far, the Mumbai Indians are fourth in the points table. The Hardik Pandya-led team is alive in the playoffs race, and the five-time champions will qualify for the next round if they manage to win their remaining two league matches. Mumbai Indians will face Delhi Capitals in their 13th league match on Wednesday (May 21) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, whereas the team's last league match is scheduled against Punjab Kings at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on May 26. Mumbai Indians in talks with Sri Lanka's white-ball captain Charith Asalanka for IPL 2025 playoffs

Mumbai Indians are in talks with Sri Lanka's white-ball captain Charith Asalanka for the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs, which begins on May 29. The development comes in considering the fact that the five-time champions will be missing South Africa's Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton and England's Will Jacks, if they qualify for the playoffs. While both Bosch and Rickelton are a part of South Africa's World Test Championship (WTC) bound squad, Jacks is a part of the England team that travels to West Indies for ODI and T20I series, starting from May 29. Asalanka comes in with a reputation of hitting the ball hard. According to a Newswire report, Asalanka has been approached by Mumbai Indians to join the squad for the remainder of the IPL 2025. 'Sri Lanka's white-ball captain Charith Asalanka has reportedly been approached by Mumbai Indians to join the squad for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season,' read the report. 'The franchise is expected to miss key overseas players — South Africa's Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton, and England's Will Jacks — if they qualify for the playoffs due to international commitments,' it added. The IPL 2025 was originally slated for a May 25 finish. But with the India-Pakistan conflict, the tournament was halted for a week. It will resume on May 17, with June 3 being finalised as the date for final. The one-week pause also gave a major headache to the some of the franchises as the revised schedule coincided with the West Indies vs England series and the WTC final preparation plans. If Asalanka joins Mumbai Indians, he will become the third Sri Lankan cricketer to join the cash-rich league as replacement players. Dasun Shanaka has already joined Gujarat Titans while the Shubman Gill-led franchise are already in talks with Kusal Mendis. Mumbai Indians started with four losses in their first five games before winning six games on the bounce. They now have 14 points from 12 games and need to win both their remaining games to stand a chance to qualify for the playoffs. Stay updated on all the action from the IPL 2025. Sri Lanka hammer Australia in record 174-run rout

Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage took four wickets to give a hapless Australia their lowest ever total in Asia with a 174-run loss in Friday's second and final ODI. Chasing a target of 282 in Colombo, a much-changed Australia testing their lineup for next week's Champions Trophy were bundled out for a meager 107. The spectacular collapse saw them lose their last seven wickets for just 28 runs. "Not the best result we wanted. We used lot of players and everyone got a game," Australia skipper Steve Smith said. "Credit to Sri Lanka. They deserved the series win. We struggled a bit in Colombo... Their bowlers were superb." Asitha Fernando set the tone with a fiery opening spell of 3-23 in four overs before the spinners tightened the screws. Wellalage triggered the collapse, bamboozling Josh Inglis with a skiddy arm ball that crashed into the stumps. In his next over, he delivered another peach, rattling the dangerous Glenn Maxwell's timber to finish 4-35. Wanindu Hasaranga joined the party from the other end to take three more including Smith, who was trapped plumb in front. This emphatic victory sealed a 2-0 series win for Sri Lanka against the defending world champions and propelled them to fifth in the ODI rankings. It also told the cricketing world that Sri Lanka's absence from the upcoming Champions Trophy, after finishing ninth in the 2023 World Cup, will be felt. "Not often you beat Australia," Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka said. "Today was our day and the spinners did a superb job," he added. "We are disappointed that we are not in the Champions Trophy... the important thing is that we don't get into a similar situation again." Sri Lanka's batting had been under the microscope in recent weeks, but the top order silenced critics with a commanding display. Kusal Mendis was the star of the show, crafting a superb 101 -- his fifth ton in ODIs and first against Australia. He found ample support from half-centuries by Nishan Madushka (51) and Asalanka. Fresh from a match-winning hundred in the opener, Asalanka bludgeoned an unbeaten 78 off just 66 balls, peppering the boundary with six fours and three towering sixes. The foundation was laid by a 98-run partnership between Kusal and Madushka for the second wicket, stabilising the innings after an early loss. Kusal then built on the momentum, stitching a 94-run stand with Asalanka for the fourth wicket. Australia made five changes as they fine-tune their lineup ahead of next week's Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai. Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Ben Dwarshuis all came in. Out went Alex Carey, Marnus Labuschagne, Cooper Connolly, Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis.

Sri Lanka complete clean sweep over Australia in ODI series

Listen to article Sri Lanka produced a commanding performance in the second ODI against Australia, winning by a massive 174 runs and claiming a 2-0 series victory in Colombo. The win was built on solid batting performances from Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka, who helped Sri Lanka post an imposing total of 281 for 4. Kusal Mendis played a crucial role, scoring 101 runs off 115 balls, supported by Asalanka's 78* and a strong partnership with Nishan Madushka, who contributed 51 runs. The Australian bowlers, already missing key players due to injury, failed to make an impact, and the visitors were bowled out for just 107 runs in the 25th over, marking one of their lowest totals in ODI history. Australia's seam attack was weakened by the absence of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis, leaving them with limited options. Despite Ben Dwarshuis's tidy performance with the new ball and Sean Abbott's solid return with 1 for 41, Australia struggled to contain the Sri Lankan batters. Their major concern ahead of the Champions Trophy remains their death bowling, which was exploited again in this match. Australia's chase of 282 always seemed difficult, and they were quickly reduced to 3 or 33. The inclusion of Travis Head, Josh Inglis, and Glenn Maxwell did little to stabilize the innings, and Australia's batting collapsed in a manner worse than their 165 all-out defeat in the first ODI. Asitha Fernando struck early, removing Matt Short for just 2, while Fraser-McGurk was dismissed for 9, falling to a slower ball from Asitha. Head started aggressively but was dismissed for 18, leaving Australia in deep trouble. Steven Smith and Inglis tried to rebuild with a 46-run partnership, but Inglis was lucky to survive a stumping chance and was eventually bowled by Dunith Wellalage. Smith, who had been in excellent form during the series, was dismissed for 29 by Wanindu Hasaranga, ending any hope of a recovery for Australia. Australia's collapse continued as their lower order crumbled, with Wellalage and Hasaranga claiming multiple wickets. The defeat marked Australia's sixth loss in their last eight ODIs, leaving them with plenty of questions ahead of the Champions Trophy. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, secured their ninth win from their last 13 matches, even though they won't be part of the Champions Trophy after a disappointing 2023 World Cup campaign. However, they will take pride in their strong series victory, having backed up their remarkable 49-run win in the first ODI. Sri Lanka's innings were built around Kusal Mendis, who played a fluent knock and reached his fifth ODI century. Asalanka, after a nervous start, steadied the innings with a brilliant 78*, while Janith Liyanage helped lift the total in the final overs. Australia's bowlers, including Tanveer Sangha and Adam Zampa, were unable to make an impact as Sri Lanka finished with a formidable total that proved well beyond Australia's reach. Australia's focus now shifts to the Champions Trophy, where they will need to regroup and address their concerns, especially in the absence of key players. For Sri Lanka, the victory serves as a confidence booster ahead of future challenges.
