Musetti, Rune set winning pace for ATP seeds in Toronto
The pair began after byes and wasted little time in advancing into the third round, with Musetti hammering Australian qualifier James Duckworth 7-5, 6-1 while Rune dispatched big hitter Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (9/7), 6-3.
Top seed Alexander Zverev was making his start later, with the German world number three facing Australian Adam Walton.
The event is missing the absolute cream of the player field, with both number one Jannik Sinner and second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz out with injury and fatigue issues.
Musetti, a former semi-finalist at both Wimbledon and Roland Garros, was ruthless with Duckworth, advancing in 82 minutes. He broke for a set and 5-1 on his opponent's double-fault and finished up a game later with an ace.
The Italian is coming back into form after losing his only grass match of the summer (Wimbledon) and then going down last week in his Washington opening match.
His last victory came in early June in the Roland Garros quarters.
Musetti had 17 winners while Duckworth was undone by more than 30 unforced errors.
The Italian next faces American Alex Michelsen, a 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 winner over Chilean qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera.
Rune, who was back in action a month after a first-round Wimbledon defeat, handed French Mpetshi Perricard a fourth career loss against top 10 players.
Denmark's four-time finalist at the Masters level produced his first hardcourt win since last March at Indian Wells.
"I tried to stay calm and focus on my serve," Rune said after his 75-minute victory. "There's sometimes not a lot you can do against his big serve, but I was trying as much as possible.
"I had a good start to the second set. I'm very happy with the match in general. I've not served like this for a while. We've been working on small adjustments.
"My serving felt good and I trusted it all the way."
World number nine Rune limited his unforced errors to just 10 -- less than half of those struck by his opponent.
Elsewhere, 11th seed Karen Khachanov beat Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina 6-4, 6-2.

Rybakina outlasts Yastremska to reach WTA Montreal quarter-finals
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina beat Dayana Yastremska 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday to book a quarter-final clash with Marta Kostyuk at the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal. Kazakhstan's Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion who won her first title in more than a year at Strasbourg in May, was slowed by nine double faults. But she ultimately had enough to get past Ukraine's Yastremska -- who was coming off a straight-sets victory over eighth-seeded American Emma Navarro. Yastremska fell behind an early break in the first set, but took advantage of Rybakina's early serving woes to break back, and broke again to take the opening set in a game that Rybakina had led 40-0. Rybakina, seeded ninth, bore down after that, breaking Yastremska twice to take the second set. Another untimely double fault cost her a break in the third, but she broke Yastremska for the second time in the set to take a 6-5 lead and held on to seal it on her fourth match point with a high backhand volley winner. She'll face another Ukrainian in Kostyuk, who came from behind to beat American McCartney Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Kostyuk reached the quarter-finals of WTA-1000 events at Qatar and Madrid this year, but she arrived in Montreal having not won a match since reaching the fourth round in Rome. Ferrand-Prévôt takes lead at women's Tour de France after commanding stage win
SAINT-FRANCOIS-LONGCHAMP, France — French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt took a commanding lead at the women's Tour de France after launching a solo attack on the final climb of Saturday's penultimate stage. She is making her Tour debut at 33 years old and leads Australian rider Sarah Gigante by 2 minutes, 37 seconds and 2023 champion Demi Vollering of the Netherlands by 3:18 heading into Sunday's last stage. Last year's event had the smallest winning margin in the history of the women's and men's races, but Ferrand-Prévôt looks like winning far more comfortably, barring mishap. She won the mountain bike gold medal at last year's Paris Olympics and the Paris-Roubaix classic in April. Overnight, she trailed Mauritian rider Kim Le Court by 26 seconds heading into stage 8 from Chambéry to Saint-François-Longchamp, which took the riders on a 112-kilometer (69-mile) trek into the mountains. It featured an early climb of 13 kilometers (8 miles) up Col de Plainpalais before finishing with a tortuous ascent of 18.6 kilometers to Col de Madeleine, one of the most famed climbs in cycling. Ferrand-Prévôt made a move on her main rivals about 9 kms from the top, pulling away to chase after Niamh Fisher-Black and Yara Kastelijn ahead of her. She soon caught them and then rode unchallenged to clinch the stage win. Gigante crossed the line 1:45 behind her, while Fisher-Black rolled in 2:15 behind in third spot. Vollering placed fourth. Sunday's ninth and final stage from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel is another mountainous route, with three big climbs, and is even longer at 124 kms.
