The new Raiders coach, 73, defended his quarterback Sunday when asked about Smith's decision to flip off a Seahawks fan during Thursday's preseason game, which served as the duo's Seattle homecoming.
'Did you see what the sign said?' Carroll said in a media session, according to Yahoo Sports.

When a reporter replied they had seen the sign, Carroll — who coached Smith for five years in Seattle — responded, 'Next question.'

Upon running out of the tunnels at Lumen Field before the start of Las Vegas' preseason opener, Smith — who spent six seasons in Seattle before being traded to the Raiders in March, two months after Carroll signed on with the team — was greeted by one fan who held up a sign that read, 'Bigger bust — Geno or JaMarcus Russell.'

Smith, 34, and teammate Maxx Crosby responded to the dig by making obscene gestures toward the stands, with footage of the scene naturally making the rounds on social media.

Carroll, who coached the Seahawks from 2010 through 2023, was also seen trying to grab the sign.
Russell is widely considered one of the NFL's biggest draft busts, as the Raiders' first-overall pick in 2007 went 7-18 as a starting quarterback.

While Smith also got off to a rocky NFL start in 2013, when the Jets selected him in the second round of the draft, he revitalized his career upon arriving in the Pacific Northwest in 2019.
In 2022, his first year as the Seahawks' starting quarterback, Smith earned a Pro Bowl nod and was named Comeback Player of the Year.
The Seahawks awarded Smith a three-year, $75 million contract in 2023, in what would be Carroll's final season with the team.
He threw for 4,283 passing yards in 2024, surpassing his own single-season record from 2022 (4,282).
The Raiders, who extended Smith in April on a two-year, $75 million contract, open the season on the road against the Patriots Sept. 7.

NFL writer reveals biggest challenge Raiders are facing in 2025

NFL writer reveals biggest challenge Raiders are facing in 2025 originally appeared on The Sporting News After weeks of practices, the Raiders finally got to take the field last weekend for their first preseason game. The Raiders went up to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. It was a homecoming for Geno Smith and Pete Carroll, who both spent years in Seattle and returned for the first time as Raiders. In the opener, the Raiders overcome a slow start to end up escaping with a tie. Of course, wins and losses don't matter in the preseason, so games are allowed to end in ties. Overall, the vibes are pretty good in Las Vegas right now. With a new coaching staff and several new playmakers, it's not surprising that many are expecting a big jump from the team in 2025. However, even with the positive vibes, Jared Dubin of CBS Sports believes the defensive backs are the biggest problem area the Raiders are facing in 2025. The Raiders lost Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, Tre'von Moehrig, and Jakorian Bennett from the group this offseason, and added Jeremy Chinn, Eric Stokes, and rookie Darien Porter. It's entirely possible this group is better in 2025, but it's far from a guarantee. Dubin offered the following regarding the room: The Raiders are starting a ton of new defensive backs this year. Gone are guys like Nate Hobbs and Tre'von Moehrig and Jack Jones and Jakorian Bennett. Newly arrived are Jeremy Chinn and Eric Stokes and third-round pick Darien Porter. We know that Pete Carroll can coach up defensive backs, but we also know it didn't look all that pretty on the back end down the stretch of his time with the Seahawks. With a ton of turnover and not much in the way of elite talent, the back end is a big question mark here. As Dubin mentioned, there's been a ton of turnover in the room, and there's no guarantee this will improve things. Currently, Porter, Stokes, and Darnay Holmes are penciled in to start at the corner spots, with Isaiah Pola-Mao and Chinn starting at the safety spots. One of the standout performers from the preseason opener, Kyu Blu Kelly could end up factoring in as well. There's just too many unknowns to feel confident about this secondary. The quarterback position was the biggest challenge last year, but that should be solidified with the reliable veteran Smith. Porter could be the biggest X-factor for this unit. If the rookie earns the starter role immediately and becomes a reliable cover corner, the team could be in good shape. If Porter struggles though, it could be a long season for this pass defense.

Angels turn triple play when Shohei Ohtani lines out to Zach Neto and 2 Dodgers are caught off base

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels turned the eighth triple play in team history Tuesday night, with shortstop Zach Neto getting two putouts and an assist off a line drive by Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani. Miguel Rojas was on second and Dalton Rushing was on first for the Dodgers in the sixth inning when Ohtani hit a drive right up the middle past reliever Brock Burke. Neto caught Ohtani's liner and stepped on second base in stride to get Rojas. Neto quickly threw to first, where Nolan Schanuel tagged out Rushing as the Dodgers rookie attempted to sneak back. The Angels' triple play was their first since Aug. 18, 2023. It also preserved a 5-5 tie in the latest edition of the Freeway Series. The Angels have won the first four games this season against the Dodgers.

Judge homers, Stanton goes 4 for 5 with a homer, as Yankees rout Twins 9-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit his first homer in nearly three weeks, Giancarlo Stanton had his first four-hit game in nearly two years, and the New York Yankees routed the Minnesota Twins 9-1 on Tuesday night. Carlos Rodón (12-7) allowed one hit in seven innings. He allowed a leadoff single to Austin Martin and cruised after a 31-pitch first inning. He became the first Yankee to complete seven innings since the left-hander pitched eight against the Cubs on July 11. Stanton went 4 for 5 for his first four-hit game since Aug. 24, 2023 against Washington. He doubled in his first at-bat, homered in the fifth and singled in his final two at-bats before getting lifted for a pinch runner following a two-run single. Judge homered for the first time since July 23 when he hit a drive off Minnesota rookie starter Travis Adams (1-2). Anthony Volpe hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the second as the Yankees beat the Twins for the ninth straight time. Stanton added a homer in the fifth to give the Yankees a 5-1 lead. It was the second time this season Stanton and Judge connected in the same game and 54th time overall, including the playoffs. The Yankees won their third series since the All-Star break and won the first two games of a series for the first time since sweeping Seattle July 8-10. Adams allowed four runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Key Moment Rodón loaded the bases when he hit Ryan Jeffers and allowed a run on a ground ball by Royce Lewis in the first. He ended the inning by retiring Kody Clemens and permitted one runner the rest of the way. Key Stat Stanton has nine of his 14 career four-hit games with the Yankees. Up Next New York rookie RHP Cam Schlittler (1-2, 4.38 ERA) faces Minnesota RHP Joe Ryan (11-5, 2.79) on Wednesday. ___
