Malaysia's AAIMS 2025 to shape National AI Action Plan 2030
Digital Ministry secretary-general Fabian Bigar confirmed AAIMS 2025 as the first AI-focused conference for ASEAN.
The event will take place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from August 12 to 13 under the theme Human Centered AI.
Fabian emphasised that the summit is more than a technology showcase, serving as a platform for ministerial discussions and knowledge exchange.
'In line with the theme of human-centered AI for a better tomorrow, it will highlight the benefits of AI for humans and reduce the negative effects of AI on humans,' he said during a Bernama TV programme.
Over 1,500 delegates, including ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn, are expected to attend.
Fabian outlined Malaysia's goals, including leading AI transformation in ASEAN and strengthening regional collaboration.
'We have plans to attract strategic investments so we also want to give confidence to foreign investors that Malaysia is ready to make Malaysia a regional AI hub,' he added.
He highlighted the opportunity for ASEAN to forge a third path in AI amid global geopolitical tensions.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently affirmed Malaysia's commitment to leading Southeast Asia in AI and digital technology.
The National AI Action Plan 2030 will focus on talent development, research, and commercialising AI technology.
Anwar also set a target of 98 per cent 5G coverage in populated and industrial areas by 2030.
The plan aims to cultivate at least 5,000 digital entrepreneurs to bolster Malaysia's digital economy. - Bernama

East-West Highway upgrades a priority under Budget 2026, says Nanta
KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway, particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under Budget 2026, minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi says. He said the ministry has submitted a funding request to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the highway," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong here on Thursday (Aug 14). Earlier, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He added that the highway's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Data collected via the app, he noted, has already supported federal funding requests, leading to repair and upgrade works along the East-West Highway and other federal roads in Perak. - Bernama

Proposal to separate AG-public prosecutor roles to be presented to Cabinet in August
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a proposal to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the public prosecutor will be tabled before the Cabinet at the end of this month. "The distinction between these roles has been a long-standing request. Now we are seeing encouraging progress," Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 14). He said this in response to Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who had asked which outdated laws were being reviewed or abolished in line with the government's reform agenda and the timeline for their implementation. Anwar said that there had been 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments - one involving citizenship and the newly passed Parliament Services Act 2025. Among the reforms cited were amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act, the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, the Ombudsman Bill 2025 and the Cyber Crime Bill 2025. The Prime Minister said that five new acts were introduced and 34 acts amended in 2023; another five new acts were enacted and 57 acts amended in 2024; and four new acts have been passed, with six acts amended, along with two new bills and 11 other bills amended so far this year. On the subject of anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar said he had no objection to enhancing or updating the current legislation. – Bernama

Malaysia and Bangladesh to establish cleaner, transparent recruitment system, says Muhammad Yunus
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Bangladesh have agreed to work towards establishing a cleaner and more transparent recruitment process for Bangladeshi workers. Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's government Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus said this was discussed in depth during his meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on Tuesday. He also acknowledged existing flaws in the current process and stressed the need to "clean it up" to avoid problems for either side. "We had a very elaborate discussion on how to proceed without having trouble for the Malaysian government. "We both promised ourselves to clean up the system and to make it easier and transparent," he told Bernama. The Nobel Prize laureate said that while Malaysia needs foreign workers, Bangladesh also seeks to ensure that the recruitment of its citizens is transparent, allowing them to work abroad with dignity, proper rights and benefits. "Malaysia needs people and we need to have these people come here to make a living for themselves and their families. So both sides need each other. "There is no shortage of goodwill. It's a question of putting together and see where the things go wrong and then we track and clean it up," he said. As of February 2025, Bangladeshi nationals form the largest group of foreign workers in Malaysia, numbering at 898,970. They represent a critical workforce in the country, primarily employed in the construction, manufacturing, plantation and service sectors. The Home Ministry has implemented the Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) facility for Bangladeshi workers, effective Aug 8, underscoring Kuala Lumpur's commitment to ethical and regulated labour cooperation with Dhaka. Yunus was on a three-day official visit to Malaysia from Aug 11-14 at the invitation of Anwar, reciprocating the Prime Minister's visit to Dhaka in October 2024. – Bernama
