Malaysia advances AI strategy with NAIO discussion series for 2030 action plan

KUALA LUMPUR: The National AI Office (NAIO) has conducted four strategic sessions to refine Malaysia's AI roadmap under the National AI Action Plan 2030. These discussions focused on AI safety, policy, talent development, and industry collaboration to strengthen the country's digital future. The Digital Minister's Office stated the sessions mark progress in finalising the 2030 plan, reflecting Malaysia's push for a trusted AI ecosystem. Representatives from government, private sectors, and academia participated to align policy direction ahead of the plan's official launch. Minister Gobind Singh Deo chaired the AI safety session, addressing risks like deepfakes, cyberattacks, and data privacy breaches. NAIO proposed a regulatory framework with voluntary guidelines, risk classification models, and incident response protocols to manage AI-related threats. The policy session explored a hybrid governance model combining NAIO oversight, sector-specific rules, and market-driven compliance tools. Talent development discussions highlighted AI integration in school curricula, vocational training, and university-industry alignment to boost local expertise. Industry leaders from the National AI Consortium (KAIN) collaborated to align AI adoption with corporate needs and accelerate R&D investments. NAIO head Sam Majid emphasised the discussions' role in shaping balanced, people-centric AI solutions for Malaysia's future. The outcomes will finalise the 2030 action plan, ensuring it reflects collective expertise and national priorities. - Bernama

Malaysia's AAIMS 2025 to shape National AI Action Plan 2030

KUALA LUMPUR: The ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit (AAIMS) 2025 will contribute to the National AI Action Plan 2030, reinforcing Malaysia's ambition to dominate AI and digital innovation in Southeast Asia. Digital Ministry secretary-general Fabian Bigar confirmed AAIMS 2025 as the first AI-focused conference for ASEAN. The event will take place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from August 12 to 13 under the theme Human Centered AI. Fabian emphasised that the summit is more than a technology showcase, serving as a platform for ministerial discussions and knowledge exchange. 'In line with the theme of human-centered AI for a better tomorrow, it will highlight the benefits of AI for humans and reduce the negative effects of AI on humans,' he said during a Bernama TV programme. Over 1,500 delegates, including ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn, are expected to attend. Fabian outlined Malaysia's goals, including leading AI transformation in ASEAN and strengthening regional collaboration. 'We have plans to attract strategic investments so we also want to give confidence to foreign investors that Malaysia is ready to make Malaysia a regional AI hub,' he added. He highlighted the opportunity for ASEAN to forge a third path in AI amid global geopolitical tensions. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently affirmed Malaysia's commitment to leading Southeast Asia in AI and digital technology. The National AI Action Plan 2030 will focus on talent development, research, and commercialising AI technology. Anwar also set a target of 98 per cent 5G coverage in populated and industrial areas by 2030. The plan aims to cultivate at least 5,000 digital entrepreneurs to bolster Malaysia's digital economy. - Bernama

Malaysia set to become AI nation by 2030, says PM [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia aims to be an "inclusive and sustainable" Artificial Intelligence (AI) nation by 2030. Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government wants the country to become a regional hub for digital technology innovation and the production of "Made by Malaysia" products and services, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "Today, the 'generational opportunity' presented by AI is right before us — and must not be missed. "Malaysia has outlined a clear direction to lead Southeast Asia's economy in AI, digital technology and the renewable energy industry, with aspirations to emerge as a key global player," he said during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Anwar said the government would implement the National AI Action Plan 2030 to drive local talent development, research, technology commercialisation and digital infrastructure to support widespread AI adoption. As part of efforts to digitalise public services under the GovTech initiative, he said the government would also introduce MyDigital ID, —a secure and reliable single digital identity authentication key. This, he said, is aimed at facilitating access to various online public services, with an unified public sector gateway also to be developed as a one-stop platform for public dealings. "Through GovTech, the national judicial system, including the Syariah Court, will be upgraded. "Improvements to the e-Syariah system and digital recording of proceedings, for example, will simplify and expedite processes for the public, court officers and syarie lawyers alike," the prime minister said. To strengthen the nation's digital talent and harness big data analytics, he said civil servants would undergo intensive training in digital and artificial intelligence (AI) fields. "With a target of 95 per cent of federal government services to be fully online by 2030, we are confident that Malaysia can stand tall as a high-income nation driven by AI and digital technology. He added that by 2030, Malaysia is targeting 98 per cent 5G coverage in populated and industrial areas, including rural areas. "This commitment is in line with the goal to create at least 5,000 digital entrepreneurs," he said. Anwar said digital trust and data security would also be prioritised through the rollout of a national digital trust and data security strategy to protect personal data, curb cyber threats and safeguard the nation's digital sovereignty. Malaysia is also aiming to rank among the top 20 countries in the Global Innovation Index by 2030, supported by AI literacy programmes beginning at the primary school level and the introduction of a National Data Commission to regulate data use and strengthen digital governance.
