Massive hike in speeding fines as tourist season kicks off 'get 3 points as a souvenir'
A six-month 'grace' period followed, during which North Wales police prioritised education over fines and penalty points. However, this approach shifted last spring when enforcement was ramped up, resulting in a significant increase in the number of speeding tickets issued.
In 2023, just over 25,000 speeding offences were recorded on 20mph and 30mph roads across North Wales. This figure nearly doubled to just under 57,000 in 2024. The number of fines peaked in August when almost 8,000 tickets were handed out, a sharp rise from 892 in June.
Following this period, the numbers gradually decreased month by month, dropping to 2,966 in January of this year. However, there has been a steady climb since then, with nearly 4,000 fines issued the following month and 4,950 in March.
This trend appears to be continuing, with the April statistics just released. These show that just under 6,000 drivers were caught speeding on 20mph roads in the region. This coincided with an influx of visitors to the area due to the Easter break and a prolonged spell of spring sunshine. There have been numerous reports of tourists falling foul of the speed limits, with North Wales Live highlighting one such case earlier this month.
It is currently unknown how quickly hundreds of North Wales roads will potentially revert back to 30mph - and what impact this will have on speeding offences. However, for the time being, drivers continue to be caught out by the thousands each month.

Francis Ngannou has opened up about the torment he is suffering since his involvement in the death of a 17-year-old girl. The MMA and boxing star crashed into Brigitte Ntsama while riding his motorbike in Yaounde, Cameroon on Easter weekend earlier this year. He rushed her to Yaounde General Hospital with what he says was a broken leg and the teenager later died following complications in surgery, according to the 38-year-old. Ngannou broke his silence about the accident in May, saying he was helping the family of Ntsama and sending his condolences. He's now spoken at length about the tragedy, telling the Ariel Helwani show: 'I was going by my mother's place and I get to this, it was like on the boulevard, and I saw this girl trying to cross the street. 'But I noticed that she didn't look, because I saw her and it was like a three-way lane side of road, but I noticed that she didn't see. I wanted to go behind her because she was walking fast. Problem is that last minute she turned around and she saw me and she froze there. 'I had a few seconds, and I hit her with the left side of my motorcycle because I was almost past, and I was like 300 yards away from a police station. I didn't even fall off the motorcycle, but she fell, so I'm like, "Should I go report this?" But she's laying on the floor. I parked my motorcycle, go there, carry her, put her in the taxi, and then follow her to the hospital. 'We get in the hospital. I took her outside. She has a tibia fracture, but I took her out of the car, and she was aware now and in pain, which was a good sign.' Ngannou went on: 'I took her to the emergency room. They reassured me everything is good, but I still stayed there for like two hours until people came. 'I left, was reassured that everything was good. I mean, not good because she's hurt, but I'm like, "Oh, it wasn't the worst. It could have been worse than this." 'And every day they were telling me, I was having the follow-up like, "Oh, she's good." Because the same night, her family came there, and she was good for the next two days, and they were prepping her surgery. 'She went for the surgery and never woke up. And just like that [she died]. I'm like, "How come? What's happened?"' Ngannou has endured a huge amount of heartbreak over the last couple of years. His 15-month-old son Kobe died from a brain malformation almost 12 months before the motorbike accident and he admitted he is having trouble sleeping. 'So, now over sleepless nights, dealing with all this, thinking of what you could have done, or should have done, how could you, what would you have done to avoid that, it's a really bad feeling', he reflected. Ngannou says the family of Ntsama recognised that although he was at least partially at fault for the traffic accident, he paid for medical expenses and repeatedly showed care for the victim in the aftermath. The fighter added: 'They (the family) even say, "okay, we know that he was in the accident, but we saw how you fight for our daughter."' The former UFC heavyweight champion - who has since lost in the boxing ring against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua - was last in action in October 2024. He knocked out Renan Ferreira and is now in exploratory talks to jump back to boxing and face Deontay Wilder.

Kane Geraint Edwards died in the River Tawe in Swansea during the late afternoon of May 24, 2022. Emergency services were notified at around 4.50pm after reports that Kane had entered the water and not been able to get out. The alarm was raised on a section of the Tawe near Swansea Enterprise Park next to Wychtree Street in the Morriston area. Police, fire service, and coastguard crews were involved in a search for Kane and his body was retrieved from the water at around 6pm. A two-day inquest into his death was held on Monday and Tuesday at the Guildhall in Swansea where assistant coroner Edward Ramsay heard evidence from different witnesses. Having gone into the river with his friend Kane got into difficulty and was seen to go under the water. During the rescue attempt it became apparent that 'debris' in the river, unseen from above the water, had played a part in his death with Kane unable to free himself having become trapped. A family member in attendance at the hearing said they had heard reports youngsters continued to swim in the same section of the river despite the tragedy and asked whether a barrier should be put in place which could help restrict access to the river from a footpath that runs alongside it. The family also said the area was a 'notorious' spot that children use and that they are worried that 'this will happen again'. He also said that six signs have been added at the location – five along the footpath and one on a fishing platform – advising people not to swim in the river. Assistant coroner Mr Ramsay confirmed that the cause of Kane's death was 'consistent with drowning'. He said: 'Kane died by drowning as a consequence of having become trapped by underwater debris in fast-flowing water of the River Tawe at around 4.50pm on May 24, 2022." Referencing earlier evidence that detailed a lack of clarity about the precise location of the incident due to issues with the location reference app what3words and whether a delay in pinpointing the exact spot along the river had affected the outcome Mr Ramsay said: 'I am satisfied on the evidence that although there may have been some delays because of confusions about precisely where it was, these delays had no causative effect on the outcome. "Kane tragically drowned at around the time he was last seen by his friend.' Mr Ramsay added that the call to the emergency services was made at 4.50pm on that day and by that time Kane was already submerged in the water. He said Kane would have been 'unaware of the hazards' in the river which meant he was unable to swim to safety, adding that it was not entirely clear if the debris which caused the teenager to become trapped was a fallen tree or a discarded trolley. Recording a short-form conclusion Mr Ramsay found Kane died as a result of an accident. 'In my judgement Kane was not aware of the risks below the water line that were causative to the death and I have no reason to doubt that he had no awareness of the very real danger that was in the water in front of him," he said. We are thankful to the emergency services for all their efforts on the day. We also want to thank the community of Morriston.' The former UFC heavyweight champion was riding through Yaounde, Cameroon, over the Easter weekend this year when he struck a pedestrian, identified as Ntsama Brigitte Manuella. Ngannou immediately rushed her to Yaounde General Hospital and covered her medical expenses, but she tragically died several days later. The devastating accident occurred just a year after the loss of his 15-month-old son Kobe - who died from a brain malformation. It's been an incredibly difficult period for the 'Predator' - who last competed in October 2024, beating Renan Ferreira to claim the inaugural PFL Super Fights Heavyweight Championship, reports All Out Fighting. Months following Manuella's death, Ngannou spoke publicly about the incident for the first time, with the 38 year old explaining he was riding his motorbike at around 7pm when the crash happened. Speaking on the Ariel Helwani show, he said: "I was going by my mom's place and I get to this, it was like on the boulevard, and I saw this girl trying to cross the street. "But I noticed that she didn't look, because I saw her and it was like a three-way lane side of road, but I noticed that she didn't see. I wanted to go behind her because she was walking fast. Despite the heartbreak of losing his son, the experience helped the Cameroonian fighter in how he dealt with his motorbike crash after he remembered moments when his boy was receiving treatment. Ngannou urged the medical team to examine whether the 17-year-old woman had internal bleeding and also requested an MRI scan. The 'Predator' was battling for some time following the collision, confessing: "So, now over sleepless nights, dealing with all this, thinking of what you could have done, or should have done, how could you, what would you have done to avoid that, it's a really bad feeling." Just days following the incident, Ngannou said that he has supported the woman's family. He paid for medical expenses, visited them privately and promised ongoing assistance. In the same interview with Helwani, the PFL star disclosed what the family told him. "They even say, okay, we know that he was in the accident, but we saw how you fight for our daughter," Ngannou recalled. He explained that the family acknowledged his choice not to flee the scene but instead to lift her into a taxi, accompany her to the hospital, and stay by her side for hours. He added: "I met them, we talked and then I also explained to them, what really happened. I say, 'Okay, I don't know if you want to hear because I know you are in the grief at this moment, but if you want to hear what's happened, I can talk about it. But I'm not here to give an explanation. I just want you to know the story, you know, because like one thing that you have to understand is that when somebody is laying down with no life, never be right." When is Francis Ngannou's next fight? It's been nearly a year since Ngannou last stepped into the ring. The PFL recently put on two landmark events in Africa, with Ngannou playing a key role in bringing MMA to his cherished continent. Yet many were left baffled as to why he didn't compete on either card. Explaining his absence, he revealed: "For example, like if you want to know what exactly is the reason why I wasn't there. I wasn't very okay with the first PFL Africa event seeming to be like an undercard. "Quoting him, we work a lot for that, PFL Africa, but I hoped PFL Africa's debut would have at least have its glory, its moment. But that wasn't my decision and I wasn't down for it. I express my feeling to them." Regarding his potential comeback, the 38 year old has his sights set on a bout with Deontay Wilder - possibly sometime later this year - though he's disclosed that talks with the boxing legend's camp are yet to begin.
