Ex-UFC star Francis Ngannou tormented by 'sleepless nights', as he details what really happened in fatal motorcycle accident with 17-year-old girl
The MMA and boxing star crashed into Brigitte Ntsama while riding his motorbike in Yaounde, Cameroon on Easter weekend earlier this year.
He rushed her to Yaounde General Hospital with what he says was a broken leg and the teenager later died following complications in surgery, according to the 38-year-old.
Ngannou broke his silence about the accident in May, saying he was helping the family of Ntsama and sending his condolences.
He's now spoken at length about the tragedy, telling the Ariel Helwani show: 'I was going by my mother's place and I get to this, it was like on the boulevard, and I saw this girl trying to cross the street.
'But I noticed that she didn't look, because I saw her and it was like a three-way lane side of road, but I noticed that she didn't see. I wanted to go behind her because she was walking fast. Problem is that last minute she turned around and she saw me and she froze there.
'I had a few seconds, and I hit her with the left side of my motorcycle because I was almost past, and I was like 300 yards away from a police station. I didn't even fall off the motorcycle, but she fell, so I'm like, "Should I go report this?" But she's laying on the floor. I parked my motorcycle, go there, carry her, put her in the taxi, and then follow her to the hospital.
'We get in the hospital. I took her outside. She has a tibia fracture, but I took her out of the car, and she was aware now and in pain, which was a good sign.'
Ngannou went on: 'I took her to the emergency room. They reassured me everything is good, but I still stayed there for like two hours until people came.
'I left, was reassured that everything was good. I mean, not good because she's hurt, but I'm like, "Oh, it wasn't the worst. It could have been worse than this."
'And every day they were telling me, I was having the follow-up like, "Oh, she's good." Because the same night, her family came there, and she was good for the next two days, and they were prepping her surgery.
'She went for the surgery and never woke up. And just like that [she died]. I'm like, "How come? What's happened?"'
Ngannou has endured a huge amount of heartbreak over the last couple of years.
His 15-month-old son Kobe died from a brain malformation almost 12 months before the motorbike accident and he admitted he is having trouble sleeping.
'So, now over sleepless nights, dealing with all this, thinking of what you could have done, or should have done, how could you, what would you have done to avoid that, it's a really bad feeling', he reflected.
Ngannou says the family of Ntsama recognised that although he was at least partially at fault for the traffic accident, he paid for medical expenses and repeatedly showed care for the victim in the aftermath.
The fighter added: 'They (the family) even say, "okay, we know that he was in the accident, but we saw how you fight for our daughter."'
The former UFC heavyweight champion - who has since lost in the boxing ring against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua - was last in action in October 2024.
He knocked out Renan Ferreira and is now in exploratory talks to jump back to boxing and face Deontay Wilder.

Hollyoaks actor Callum Kerr has urged friends of his late mother not attend his stepfather's funeral after the pair are believed to have been killed in a murder-suicide. Andrew Searle, 65, and his wife Dawn, 56, were found dead at their home in Les Pequies, south west France by a horrified neighbour on February 6 this year. Mrs Searle was discovered in her pyjamas outside their house with a head injury and jewellery scattered around her body. Her husband, a former financial investigator, was found dead inside the house, hanging from a radiator. Earlier this year, a prosecutor in charge of the case concluded there was no evidence that another person was involved in their deaths, meaning one of the spouses murdered the other before dying by suicide. Mr Kerr has now urged friends of his mother not to attend Mr Searle's funeral, saying it would be 'inappropriate' for her memory to be associated with the man 'who may have been responsible for her death'. He said in a statement on social media: 'In the absence of any evidence suggesting third-party involvement in the tragic death of our mother, Dawn Kerr, the prevailing hypothesis remains that of a murder-suicide. 'Our mother was killed by multiple blows to the head, and Andrew was found deceased by hanging. His injuries are consistent with self-hanging, and no defensive wounds were found on his body. There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage. Mr Kerr said in a post on social media it would be 'inappropriate' for her memory to be associated with the man 'who may have been responsible for her death' 'While the official investigation is still ongoing, we cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand,' the statement continued. 'For this reason, we must respectfully but firmly request that our mother not be included in any way in the funeral arrangements being made for Andrew. Please do not share photographs of them together.' 'Please do not attend Andrew's service if you were a friend of our mother. It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. Back in February, investigators reportedly believed that a marital crime followed by a suicide was probable, after examinations in the house and garden failed to uncover evidence of a third party. It was initially believed Mrs Searle had tried to run away from an attacker before she was caught and battered to death. There was also evidence of a frantic search inside the property, with drawers and cupboards left open and furniture upended. But inquiry sources said that Mrs Searle 'would have certainly been heard by near neighbours' if she had been murdered in the garden. Post-mortem examination results also showed there were no defensive wounds on Mr Searle, nor any forensic evidence suggesting persons unknown touched him or his wife. The couple had started a new life at a villa in picturesque Les Pesquiès, north of Toulouse, after moving from Musselburgh in East Lothian, Scotland, ten years ago. Less than 24 hours before he was found dead, CCTV footage appeared to show Mr Searle entering a tobacconist in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Tragedy on the Welsh mountains as man, 36, plunges to his death from knife-edge ridge
Tragedy has hit the Welsh mountains after a man plunged to his death from a knife-edge ridge. The walker, 36, fell off Crib Goch, a notoriously dangerous Mount Snowdon precipice on the approach to Yr Wyddfa, on Saturday morning. North Wales Police and the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team rushed to the location by helicopter but pronounced the man dead at the scene. A spokesperson for the force said: 'We are saddened to confirm that a 36-year-old man has died following a fall from Crib Goch in Eryri National Park on Saturday, 16 August. 'Emergency services, including North Wales Police and the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, responded to reports of a man falling from the ridge at approximately 11:30am. 'The man was recovered from the mountain by helicopter but was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. 'Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the man's next of kin have been informed, and the coroner has been notified.' Inspector Jamie Owens added: 'My deepest condolences remain with the man's family at this incredibly difficult time. Our investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident is ongoing.' It comes after a man with a broken wrist spent an hour trying in vain to save his hospital doctor friend after she fell 30ft from a spot nearby. Dr Charlotte Crook, 31, and her colleague Adam Weatherhogg had been walking in Snowdonia on February 16 when Ms Crook slipped and plunged off a grassy ledge. Senior coroner John Gittins praised the 'amazing efforts' that Mr Weatherhogg made as he carried out chest compressions in a bid to help Dr Crook, of Perry Barr, Birmingham. Her parents described the hills and mountains as their only child's 'happy place'. She had a 'passion for exploration of the great outdoors'. Dr Crook was an experienced walker but died from a head injury last February on Glyder Fach. The Ruthin hearing was told that she had been descending when she slipped. The tragedy was a 'conspiracy of all matters at that time, weather, route and loss of footing'. The coroner recorded a conclusion of accidental death. Influencer Maria Eftimova, 28, who friends said had an 'insatiable thirst for life and exploring our world's beauty', joined a Facebook group who went hiking up a 3,000ft Snowdonia peak. The thrill-seeker - who had more than 10,000 followers on social media - was an experienced climber who had recently completed an ice-climbing course in Norway. But tragically the engineering student lost her footing when her heel slipped while scrambling up Tryfan on February 22. Neil Oakes, who was among a group of about 18 on the peak when the party split in two, said he had been ahead of Ms Eftimova and turned around to check on his companions. 'I turned around again and saw Maria tumbling through the air below me,' he said in a statement to the inquest. 'I knew there was going to be an impact. I was shouting "No,no,no!" 'When I turned back she had hit the ledge below.' North West Wales senior coroner Kate Robertson told the hearing in Caernarfon: 'Very sadly it seems Maria was scrambling with others when she's unintentionally and unexpectedly fallen. 'During the course of that fall, she has sustained the injuries which have sadly led to her death. 'That fall was entirely accidental.' She concluded that Ms Eftimova's death had been an accident. In October, a banker who fell to his death while hiking in Snowdonia told friends he 'could do with some help' as he struggled to descend the 300 foot Tryfan peak. Banker Sam Caley, 49, shouted to his friends: 'I don't know how I got here. I don't know if I can find my way back' after he had separated from his group to find a different route down the mountain. At the inquest in Ruthin the assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central Kate Robertson read a statement from one of his friends, Tony Clarke, in which he described the problems they faced while descending the peak. The four friends arrived in North Wales on June 7, intending to stay two nights, and that afternoon set off up Tryfan, one of the most recognisable peaks in Snowdonia. One of them turned back because he found it too physically demanding, but the other three made it to the summit, where they rested. Mr Caley, a 49-year-old from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire and a programme director at Deutsche Bank, was an experienced hiker, but while Clarke and the third member of the group, Adriaan Commander headed down the path towards the Heather Terrace he followed a parallel path. In his statement Clarke said he shouted at Caley to come back to them but he may not have heard. 'We told him to retrace his steps but he was reluctant,' he said. The two lost sight of him but heard him say: 'I could do with some help here guys.' Clarke described how he then saw his friend falling and he tried to see where he had landed. An off-duty paramedic who was a qualified mountain guide went to their assistance and the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team was called out. 'Adriaan and I were in shock,' said Clarke. Caley was declared dead at the scene, having suffered head injuries. The coroner recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
