Five Great Reads: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, a mysterious skyjacker, and Albania's Trump Island

Happy Saturday! The world felt like a scary place this week, but these five reads kept me going – as did the campaigners who forced Jeff Bezos to relocate his wedding in Venice. If only we got the inflatable crocodiles – but at least there was a Bezos lookalike confusing the crowds.
Continuing with the theme of the rich, Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, have spent more than $1bn on an Albanian island – one of the last undeveloped islands in the Mediterranean.
Unlike in Venice, the Albanian prime minister, Edi Rama, has welcomed the purchase of Sazan Island, saying 'We need luxury tourism like a desert needs water.'
Albanians call Sazan Ishulli i Trumpëve – Trump Island. Until now mostly untrammelled by development, the island, which was once home to a military base, is on the verge of becoming a mecca for ultra-luxury tourism – once the unexploded ordnance has been removed.
Environmental concerns: Environmentalists such as Olsi Nika, a marine biologist and the director of the NGO EcoAlbania, are worried about the development. 'This area is in the Karaburun-Sazan maritime national park. It means the beaches and waters within 2km (1.25 miles) of the shore are protected. What will large public works, the building of docks, yacht traffic and sewage run-off do to the place?'

It's been hard to shake the image that the character Lena Dunham's landmark series, Girls, gave Allison Williams. In this interview, the actor reflects on privilege, growing up with a famous parent, and her role in sci-fi horror film M3gan.
What does she think of AI, tech and parenting? Williams recounts using ChatGPT to answer one of her three-year-old son's questions. 'Watching what happened to his face was like when Gemma sees her niece interacting with M3gan. Like, I have connected my kid to a drug, this is so immediately addictive and intoxicating,' she says. She quickly put her phone away and made a mental note to go to the library next time to get out a book. 'I can't justify it, logically,' she says. 'It just felt like an innate instinct.'
And her thoughts on Botox? She loves having it when she's not filming – 'because, you know, you need to make facial expressions when you're shooting'.

This year marks 80 years since the US dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing more than 200,000 people.
Today, every one of the crew members who carried out the bombings is dead. One of the last writers to interview them reopens his files.
'Just in the last week, war has broken out in the Middle East over fears that Iran may be very close to having a bomb. In such times, perspective matters … History has lessons to teach us.'.

On 24 November 1971, a man who called himself 'Dan Cooper' hijacked a plane for US$200,000. He then parachuted out in his suit and dress shoes, never to be seen again.
'It's like the best book I've ever read, but I'm missing the first and last chapters,' podcaster Darren Schaefer tells writer Daniel Lavelle, who both potentially suffer from the 'Cooper curse' (a term coined by author Geoffrey Gray about being totally obsessed with the case). I've personally still got whiplash from the opening of this story.
DB Cooper effect: the mind-boggling mystery has inspired news article after article, books, podcasts, movies, documentaries, even a DB Cooper-themed bar – and an annual convention held in Oregon.

Ulrika Jonsson hits out at Andy Carroll for 'gallivanting across the Mediterranean' with Lou Teasdale while his ex Billi Mucklow 'chooses to put their children first'

has criticised Andy Carroll for 'gallivanting across the Mediterranean' with his girlfriend Lou Teasale while his ex Billi Mucklow is at home with their children. Billi and Andy have three children together - Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae - and she also raises his two children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14 from his past relationship. The footballer is now in a relationship with make-up artist Lou, recently confirming they had got back together after a brief split earlier this month. Ulrika has been distinctly unimpressed with Andy's loved-up social media snaps with Lou from their travels while TOWIE star Billi looks after his children. In her column for The Sun, she wrote: 'Billi is at home with the three children she shares with Carroll and the two children he has from a previous relationship. She's been going about her business quietly, diligently, with unwavering dignity. Choosing to put the children first. 'She has understood that children need continuity, connection and a daily routine, so while their father has been gallivanting across the Mediterranean with his tongue attached to Lou Teasdale's tonsils, she has chosen to prioritise those she loves the most.' Ulrika asked why is it often the mother who stays at home taking care of the children while the father finds it easier to 'leave his family behind'. 'The mother is the one who remains at home with the children; who doesn't rush into another relationship; who understands she needs to get her ducks in a row before embarking on a new life?' she wrote. 'Why is it that it's so much easier for a man to just leave his family behind and go and satisfy his own needs?' Ulrika added that Andy and Lou's 'summer of love' has been so relentless, she's 'exhausted' just watching their antics. MailOnline has contacted representatives of Andy Carroll for comment. It comes after Andy revealed he is back with Lou following a brief split earlier this week. The couple split after a series of rows, with initial reports claiming the footballer dumped the make-up artist after becoming fed up with her high maintenance behaviour. However, Daily Mail exclusively revealed on Wednesday it was in fact Lou who called off the relationship. Andy has now vowed to cut down on alcohol in a bid to save their relationship after boozy rows as he confirmed the pair are trying 'to work through their difficulties'. He told The Sun on Sunday: 'I love Lou and I love her family. We row like any couple.' Referring to his divorce from wife Billi Mucklow, who he shares three children with, Andy added: 'Things have been difficult for me and I'm going through a divorce. 'Some of our rows have been about alcohol, as Lou has been teetotal for 14 years and I have a beer or wine at dinner and a drink after the game, but it's not a problem in my life. 'We're better off together and we're trying to work through our difficulties.' The pair, who were together for just over a year, unfollowed each other on social media and Andy wiped all trace of Lou from his Instagram. They now follow each other on Instagram and have added their loved-up snaps back to their pages. On Wednesday, a source told the Daily Mail: 'It was Lou who ended her relationship with Andy, she walked away a few days ago, it was very much her choice to end their romance. 'She isn't interested in pointing the finger or blaming him and hoped to deal with their split in private, before he blocked her on Instagram and deleted their photos together. 'Lou is very upset by how everything has played out and the arguments between them were especially difficult for her to go through. 'However, Andy wants Lou back and flew to Ibiza via private jet on Tuesday just to find her, even though he has no idea where she's staying. 'He will think it's a romantic gesture but for Lou, she's unimpressed and just wants to be away with her family, she's not interested in any of his attempts at a reconciliation now. 'All she has done all year is love and support Andy, her feelings haven't gone away, but Lou has to protect herself now and ending the relationship is the only way to move forward.' The pair began dating last year after he separated from wife Billi last September. Andy and Billi called it quits divorce after two years of turbulent marriage, the footballer confirmed last year. In 2022, their wedding was almost called off when Andy was pictured drunkenly passed out in bed with two women in Dubai on his stag do. Billi forgave him after one of the women insisted nothing sexual happened. Less than two years after their nuptials, the couple's marriage was over - with Andy confirming they had started divorce proceedings after 'a hard few months for our family'. Andy said in a statement at the time: 'Billi and I have privately separated earlier this year and we are under way with our divorce proceedings'. 'It has been a hard few months for our family and we continue to move forward amicably for our children.' The former couple have three children together Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae and she also raises his two children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14 from his past relationship
