Singapore Airlines' Scoot to launch Okinawa, Labuan Bajo flights as Jetstar Asia winds down
SINGAPORE, June 13 — Flag carrier Singapore Airlines' budget arm, Scoot, will take over some of the routes run by Qantas Airways' Jetstar Asia, which announced this week that it would close, a Singapore Airlines spokesman said today.
Qantas announced on Wednesday that it will close its Singapore-based budget subsidiary on July 31, citing rising supplier costs, high airport fees and strong regional competition.
Subject to regulatory approval and talks with partners, Scoot will launch new flights from Singapore to Japan's Okinawa and Labuan Bajo in Indonesia, the spokesman said. Both routes were exclusively operated by Jetstar Asia.
Singapore Airlines will also ramp up flights to other affected routes, including ones from Singapore to Manila, Colombo and Jakarta. Full flight schedules will be made public in due course, the spokesperson said.
Singapore Airlines previously said that it had set up channels for Jetstar Asia staff to expedite applications for jobs within the airline group. — Reuters

Sipitang steel plant to show progress by July
Phoong KOTA KINABALU (June 13): Esteel Enterprise's RM31 billion steel processing plant at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP) is expected to show visible physical progress by July this year. State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said the ministry recently received a formal letter from the company reaffirming its commitment to the project. Following the issuance of the Federal Manufacturing License in January 2025, Esteel quickly moved to sign a gas supply agreement with Sabah Energy Corporation and Petronas in February. Phoong said the months of March and April were dedicated to a competitive bidding process to appoint a joint tender (JT) contractor in China. This process concluded with the selection of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) on May 30. 'This marks the official beginning of the project's implementation phase. Both Esteel and CCCC are confident that by July and August 2025, we will witness substantial transformation at the SOGIP site,' he said. Phoong, who is also Luyang assemblyman, criticised Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong for politicising the matter and lodging a police report alleging a lack of progress at the site. 'As elected representatives, we can raise such issues during State Assembly sittings. There's no need to resort to police reports. Ask me in DUN — I am ready to answer any question about Esteel,' he said at a press conference at Wisma Kewangan today. 'Don't politicise genuine investors. It deters our efforts to attract more investments and grow the state's industrial sector.' He assured that the green steel manufacturing project will proceed as planned, stressing the strong commitment from both Esteel and the state government. Phoong also highlighted that the project has been thoroughly vetted by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry. He added that Esteel's parent company, Singapore-based GreenSteel Limited, is a legitimate entity — recently acquiring shares in Penang-based Southern Steel Bhd and already owning Antara Steel in Labuan.

Affected travellers told to directly seek outgoing Singapore low-cost airline's help
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) has advised consumers impacted by Jetstar Asia Airways' upcoming suspension of operations to take immediate action and seek assistance directly from the airline. This follows Jetstar Group's announcement on June 11 regarding the managed cessation of its Singapore-based low-cost subsidiary Jetstar Asia (3K), which will officially cease operations on July 31. In a statement today, Mavcom urged affected travellers to reach out to Jetstar Asia through its dedicated Live Chat service or refer to its list of global contact centres at Jetstar Contact Numbers for further assistance and information regarding existing bookings. In line with the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016, Mavcom said affected consumers are entitled to a refund of the full cost of the ticket (inclusive of taxes and fees) in the original mode of payment within 30 days and entitled to rerouting to the final destination on comparable transportation. "If affected consumers do not receive these options or require further assistance, they are encouraged to contact Mavcom. "Mavcom remains committed to safeguarding the rights of air travel consumers and will continue to provide necessary assistance to those impacted by the cessation of Jetstar Asia's services," it said. Jetstar has clarified that the cessation will not impact other airlines under the Jetstar Group, including Jetstar Airways, which operates international services between Australia and Southeast Asia, or Jetstar Japan. In Malaysia, only flights operated by Jetstar Asia from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and Penang will be affected. The airline also announced that it will directly notify customers if there are changes to scheduled flights before July 31. This is due to a planned progressive reduction in its flight schedule, leading to the cessation of services, it added.
